Chaos In Tejas Thoughts & Recollections

Recovering from my 1st Chaos In Tejas, finally popped that cherry after years of wanting to go, finally did it, and even though I went straight from MDF, it wasn't as tiring as I though it would be.

Got BBQ after I got picked up at the airport. Went to my friend's place and pregamed. I love Lone Star beer and good greens. Ate some good falafel from Kismet's before heading down to Red7. That night's show was Nasum's final appearance on US soil. What a killer show! Mass Grave from Vancouver opened the night with killer ripper crusty grind. They were then followed by the doom death heaviness of Innumerable Forms. Phobia played a great set despite being a 3 piece. Gas Chamber was a band I've never heard before but they played a really angular grind/noise set. Whitehorse was really heavy but I was drifting in and out of sleep after flying and only sleeping for 4 hours. But No Statik was a huge crossover wake up call! That was when the stage dives really started to get turned up and their singer dove into the crowd a lot. Then Nasum got on and shit was on! This was the best set I've seen of them, even better than at MDF and in Chicago. Lots of stage dives, the Mass Grave did guest vocals, Keijo got kicked in the face accidentally by a stage diver but he was cool about it and drank lots of champagne, the pits were gnarly and I even got the mic for Inhale/Exhale! After that I was just ready to go to bed.

Friday started out with a huge hangover and a much needed brunch at Torchy's. They make the best queso I've ever had in Austin. I then pregamed at my friend's place again and went to a secret house show. Mass Grave headlined that show with Six Brew Bantha, Chest Pain and Decayed Race. Decayed Race started the afternoon with a short but sharp set of angry grind. Six Brew followed with an insane set where all of them were shirtless. Chest Pain was some angry PV. Mass Grave's set was insane and I was covered in cheap beer by the end of their set.

After that house show, went back to my friend's place to do another pregame, this time for the Saint Vitus show at Red7. Unfortunately missed Mammoth Grinder while we were getting Indian food at this really tasty food truck and got just in time for Gates Of Slumber. One of my favorite bands from Indy. King's Destroy were boring. Went outside and got some sno-cones. Went back to check out Magic Circle. Great traditional doom done by Boston hxc dudes! Hail! Hornet played a punky southern sludge set. Church Of Misery sounded so much better in that smaller stage and I actually stuck around for most of their set. Saint Vitus is always a pleasure to see live. One of the heaviest sets of the entire fest for sure.

At this point, I was already feeling the aches of being away from home for over a week, and I was ready to just call it a day. But Saturday turned out to be the craziest day of the fest. Got breakfast tacos at Janitzio's and pregamed before heading out to Beerland. Got there just in time for another great set from Gas Chamber. Met up with some friends and Stick Together just didn't jive with the mostly boozing and smoking crowd. Power Trip really ripped hard and got the crowd going with some fast crossover. Midnight was probably the most sweatiest afternoon set going and their set was violent and crazy.

After Midnight, got dinner at this place called Casino's and their burgers were just overpriced and generic. Kuma's is still the ruler of the burger throne. Anyways, went to the Mohawk's and arrived during Zyanose, never seen them before, but they were great live. Moved up front for Deviated Instinct, and they sounded so much better than at MDF, so I was able to appreciate their crusty death a lot more. Winter IMO was the best set of the day. They sounded so much better here than at MDF as well, and they were able to get extra heavy by having two cabs each for the bass and the guitar. They played Into Darkness and Eternal Frost EP in their entireity and they just flattened Austin with a heavy tectonic blast of death doom. Antisect closed out the show with a surprisingly great set where I saw the most stage dives. Headed over to Red7 and caught Ares Kingdom and Black Witchery, both were tight but the crowd was pretty sparse since Absu cancelled. After that, grabbed some tacos at Taco Cabana and as I was drifting off to sleep, I get a text that Iceage were playing an after show at the Broken Neck at 4am. Urgh.

Overall, Chaos In Tejas was a blast, and I hope to make it out to Austin again next year.
