Drummer Brent Smedley Splits With Iced Earth
Iced Earth announced that drummer Brent Smedley has divided with the band due to individual household reasons. His replacement will be Raphael Saini (Chaoswave/Ex-Emergency Gate), who will start with the band on its trip dates this summer.
Smedley clarified: “I have household members that are elderly and frail and need my aid here in Jacksonville. It’s been among the hardest choices of my life but I simply can not commit to the kind of schedule the band should have and needs so I decided to ask permission to step down from my post.”
The band commented: “Brent has actually been a valued member of the group for a long time. We thank him for his contributions, friendship and energy and want him all the very best for the future. After months of searching and reviewing literally hundreds of applicants from around the world, Pentagram is excited to announce Matt Goldborough as their new guitarist. Matt is a Philadelphia based musician, composer and riff aficionado. Versed in many genres of music, Matt?s experience outside of the heavy metal world brings a fresh yet classic approach to this genre-defining band. His style hearkens back to the very origins of ?heavy metal? itself when heavy blues and psychedelic rock guitarists pioneered the genre in an attempt to harden rock and roll. This of course is exactly what Bobby Liebling and the original Pentagram line up did back in 1971.
Having played in a bevy of bands on the East coast, Goldsborough is most recently known as part of the acclaimed Philadelphia rock band, THE GREAT UNKNOWN.
His debut with the Ram Family, rounded out by Bobby Liebling on vocals, Greg Turley on bass guitar and Sean Saley on drums, was on April 16th, 2013 at the sold out show at Saint Vitus Bar in Brooklyn, NY. If that gig wasn?t special enough, the band performed songs not heard live in over 40 years! Inspired by a demand from the fans, Liebling and company pulled out rare gems, including ?Be Forewarned?. Relapse Records is proud to announce the long awaited reissue of New York death metal legends Suffocation’s debut release Human Waste on vinyl for the first time in over ten years! The EP, originally released in 1991 as the first CD ever released on Relapse Records, is now available once again on wax. This edition marks the first time the band’s much sought after Involuntary Slaughter and Reincremation demos are available on vinyl. Human Waste, a seminal release in the death metal pantheon, proved to be the catalyst that launched the career for one of death metal’s most influential bands in addition to solidifying Relapse as one of the most important labels in extreme music.

Slayer Guitarist Jeff Hanneman Passes Away
Slayer has uploaded the following message online by means of Facebook about guitar player Jeff Hanneman passing away earlier today:
“Slayer is devastated to inform that their bandmate and brother, Jeff Hanneman, died at about 11AM this morning near his Southern California house.
“Hanneman was in an area hospital when he suffered liver failure. He is survived by his wife Kathy, his sister Kathy and his brothers Michael and Larry, and are be sorely missed.
“Our Brother Jeff Hanneman, May He Rest In Peace (1964 – 2013).”.
