I actually can't get through this album a second time around. I just found it really boring, and felt like going back to Void.

This album kind of reminds me of Tool's Lateralus when it came out. I remember liking it but thought it was kind of boring and not nearly as good as the previous releases. Who would of thought, years later it had become the best album they ever wrote. I get that feeling from Valley of Smoke.

No but I see your point and this CD could end up being their best at one point. I went back and listened to Null for the first time in years. Holy shit that EP is angry and awesome. Forgot how good those tracks were.

You haven't even given the album a second chance. You wrote it off, quick. It's far from boring.
also, This is definitely a different direction for Intronaut...how is it not?

I've tried to listen to it a couple of times, but I find myself unable to even get through the first half or so. The last few songs are good; my dislike for that comparison has nothing to do with boredom, though, if you read what I said.

I was only comparing because of how both bands tried something different and it took awhile to sink in, not comparing the two bands or albums.

Lol, I don't really care for the clean vocals, because it isn't anything new to their genre. Adding clean vocals in extreme music is also the most typical move of all, when a band is trying to remove itself from the crowd, so it doesn't really strike me as different.

Why do you insist on being such a downer? just cuz it isn't the newest revelation in their "genre" doesn't mean it's a terrible album. I mean, if you don't like it, you don't like it, but your reasoning seems retarded.

I didn't even notice the "genre" part. So, Tool did something new to the progressive genre?

For one, I never said it was a terrible album, but it doesn't compare to the rest of their work. Because of that, I found the Tool comparison retarded, since that is a career-defining work for them. Tool made an opus for modern progressive music with Lateralus, and Intronaut added clean vocals on Valley of Smoke. The only thing I can think of that is amazing on it is the production, but the music really gets monotonous at certain points.

You guys should check out The Challenger EP. It was done right before prehistoricisms, sounds a lot like Void but with prehistoricisms' production values. It's actually a bit different than anything else they've ever done, less groove based but still really heavy and awesome.

It seems all that most people care about is if a band makes every album sound completely different from one another. It seems a lot of people only care if bands try new shit and don't pay attention to how well they execute their new direction. Intronaut has progressed enough to keep their sound fresh, but retained enough of their core sound, to prevent alienating the people that have been listening to them all along. I rather a band progress naturally than force progression.
