i've been listening to jazz forever, and it's probably the first genre of music that i started consciously engaging; that being said, i always dug the old school stuff and never really gave the newer guys a solid chance. by old school, i mean joe pass (the virtuoso album), wes, benson before he sold out, miles davis, so on and so forth.
i need some new, fresh material. if you guys had to pick three jazz musicians (regardless of instrument, group type, etc.) who are still at the top of their game, who would it be? for example, here's one guy i discovered in 2009 who i am enjoying a ton |

a lot of the stuff recommended in this thread is non-traditional jazz, so....have a good look-through and you probably won't find anything you don't like lol

speaking of whom, here's my old piano teacher, the dude who got me seriously into music through jazz improv and a copy of Kind of Blue the first track on the page won a damn prestigious award and is apparently influenced by rosenwinkel among others. there's also a cool video of him on the site playing through a beethoven sonata http://www.ethanherr.com/ |

Singularity, to be honest, just download every album in this thread, obviously sans the ones you already have cause there are a bunch that I'm sure you have.
That being said, download that Avishai Cohen album that I put up a while back. it's new and fresh and non traditional. Also "Heartcore" by Kurt Rosenwinkel. Kurt is seriously bringing Jazz into the 21st century. He sticks to the traditional ways but reinvents them with new ideas. |

The Avishai Cohen post was one of the best things I've ever downloaded. It's exactly what I wanted out of a jazz record.

I just went back and downloaded some of the albums in this thread that I forgot to download and shit there has been soooo much amazing shit posted in this thread. Whoever posted that Aaron Parks album thanks, and that one Bill Frisell album "Unspeakable" damn. This has given me new motivation for this thread once again.

edit: That Bugge Wesseltoft album holy shit man. I feel compelled to repost that cause I don't think a lot of people checked it out as I didn't even.
![]() link: http://rapidshare.com/#!download|211..._Ing.rar|99487 "FiLM iNG" by Bugge Wesseltoft. Mayhem After Death said it best with his description: "This isn't as traditional as a lot of the jazz picks here have been, but it's a nice blend of many musical flavors. A lot of ambience, some electronic elements, some upbeat stuff, with a nice jazzy undertone throughout. A blunt is highly recommended for the first track, which is too mellow and beautiful as it is." |

Jazz Album of the Week: Chris Potter - Ultrahang (2009) ![]() This is very funky jazz group with a boner for experimentation. There's no bass apparently, but I couldn't even notice because of how they manage to stay grooving. Potter's solos are epic...dude's got serious chops and feel all at once. Album will not disappoint. Random review from Amazon: "If you're a fan of jazz, and since you've made your way here, I'm assuming that you are, this is a must have in your collection. This is not "straight ahead" jazz but it has all the same qualities that make us love straight ahead jazz; wonderful composition, top level playing and great improv. This is truely what Russ Davis would have called "moja" or modern jazz. First of all, Chris Potter is a true modern master of the instrument and he takes his playing and feel to another level with this recording. 2nd and 3rd tracks right now are my favorite. Facing East has that "we're chillin' and we don't give a fuck" swag and Rumples is just a super funky, atonal (almost meshuggah-like) jam that makes me want to party with black people.
