hm.. out of the last 10 ones i've seen "only" half of them would qualify as "shitty" (score <5). and (tekken not withstanding) most of those that end up being shitty at least have some decent, interesting premises and are brought down by their technical execution (mostly due to lack of experience and/or budget). plus, i watch the shitty ones first so i can free up some space on my harddisk

Saw this today. Glad this series is over cause the shit just gets more ridiculous as time goes on, I found myself giggling at some of the "traps" because of just how ridiculous they were..you could tell the movies had definitely become more about the gore than the story.
Admittedly, just like a couple of the other Saw movies...the ending was excellent (and no not because it was over haha).

It had been a long time since I'd seen this movie but I decided to check it out again. This movie is a lot funnier now that I'm older (it came out when I was 13) and I understand some of the jokes better.
I really enjoyed the movie itself though, Emile and Elisha had great chemistry.

i love the Saw movies but the fact that its in 3D sure doesnt add anything to it. in fact, it makes it quite trendy and gay.

and The Girl Next Door was alright. Elisha Cuthbert is fine.

Just got back from seeing Saw 7, was ok. Ending was predictable, should have focused more on difference between Hoffman and the others. Less about the traps and more about motivations/story. But i haven't seen 6 maybe they explained Jigsaw's grand design in that or if there ever was one (only one i haven't seen). Definitely left some questions as to the point of it all, but again maybe those were answered in 6 dunno, gotta check it out someday.

The Orphanage (Spanish shiz)

Finally got down to watching this on Halloween night after so much hype.

Was pretty good, even though it isn't really the type of horror I usually enjoy (definitely not part of the nu-horror coming out of Europe).

Thought the soundtrack was a bit overly pompous at times which took away from the atmosphere, and the last two scenes were too glossed over and packaged. Perhaps I just prefer a rawer vibe to the production/presentation.

I read somewhere that what's so great about this movie is that you can read it as a horror/ghost story or as a psychological thriller, and I definitely agree - that dual viewpoint is probably one of the strongest aspects of it. And although I griped about the polished style of the film, it's actually refreshing to see such a refined horror that takes it's time to build characters and attachments instead of dropping cheap scares in prematurely.

Very entertaining, definitely a recced watch.

Now need to check out a bunch of other horror flicks, Let The Right One In, The Devil's Rejects, The Strangers, Drag Me To Hell...anyone got any other recent horror reccs?

Let the Right One In is good. I thought Devil's Rejects was worse than House, it was more a road movie from hell in style. The Strangers i haven't seen, Drag Me To Hell was okay.

Id recommend (listing more new ones rather than classics): Them (Ils), Triangle, The Ordeal (Clavaire, quite bizarre mood), Mutants (the french one '09), 1408, Hush (more of a thriller), Pandorum (i liked it!)...

The Beyond tends to be the only horror film I watch on Halloween, though this is usually after I give the film Halloween another chance but am forced to shut it off after 15 minutes of its sheer stupidity.

these were both great:

Classic Italian gothic horror by Mario Bava starring Barbara Steele as a witch/vampire rising from the grave. Mandatory for horror fans.

Four segments by four different Japanese directors, each based on a macabre/mystery story by Edogawa Rampo, who was basically Japan's Edgar Allan Poe (his pseudonym is even a Japanese alliterative translation), and judging from these shorts, was one sick fucker. Highly recommended. Also Tadanobu Asano, the guy who played Kakihara in Ichi the Killer stars in each film.

Watched Winters Bone too yesterday and I thought it's pretty good. Sure it's a slow movie but the atmosphere is realistic and wicked, the story is reasonable and the acting was really good. I say 8/10

Watched Scott Pilgrim blah too, what a crap I give it 3/10 and if it wasn't for that cute china-chick it would be 2/10. And the 2 points are for execution only, story is practically non-existent.

I didn't find the story very engaging as it progressed and the film doesn't really go anywhere. It's about perseverance, but the protagonist already embodies this quality when the film starts, so the events that happen later aren't exactly profound. The mystery wears off within the first 30 minutes or so because you already know what "happened" by that time. It's also slightly anticlimactic, but that has a lot to do with the stagnate story imo. The acting is great, but that's what's expected in a drama. It's not bad by any means, but it's certainly not great either. I'm sure you'll enjoy it after all the crap you've been sitting through lately.

haha. yeah, after those last 3 even a totally lame and mediocre movie would be a masterpiece. thanks for the write-up (i usually value negative, critical opinions more than positive ones :))

i think i'll let it slide a bit further down the "to watch" list so i can evaluate it a bit more objectively ;)
