I thought El Topo was vastly overrated. Very meandering and trying too hard to be weird and "surreal" (in the pop sense of the word, not the actual thing). It had some striking visuals, but the plot was a pretentious pseudo-mystic mess. Never got around to watching Holy Mountain because of how much it let me down.

I feel similarly about many David Lynch films, but I actually still enjoy a number of the better ones, even if they're still overrated.

Now Bunuel's early films, anything Svankmajer (again), the Quay Brothers, and even some Ken Russell movies I find mindblowing.

Relatively big difference between his early shit and when he resumed his career in the 50s/60s.

Un Chien Andalou and L'Age d'Or are goddamn masterpieces.

I love his later shit a lot, but it's so much more tame and toned down. More like "magical realism" than Surrealism. Still, the trilogy of The Milky Way, Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie and The Phantom of Liberty are some of the finest absurd comedies ever made. Perhaps better than anything Monty Python.

Just watched The Lovely Bones.

Really enjoyed it, but it was a mere shell of the book.

Just finished Martyrs (would have finished it earlier but I haven't been home for a while) and... wow. I really really enjoyed it but I still need to digest it. All I can say for now is it's one of the darkest movies I've seen and it will be an addition to my movie collection.

Getting Antichrist now.

The characters were not well developed and it basically lacked emotional depth. In combination with a rather simple story, the whole film just wasn't that enthralling (maybe Gilliam had to rewrite the script after Ledger passed away? dunno). I can't go into details without spoiling you, but it has its moments nonetheless. It's obviously better than Brothers Grimm (haven't seen Tideland), but unfortunately nowhere near his great masterpieces (what i hoped for).

Anybody watch this? looks dumb as dried dogshit, and I hate John Legonozonomo or whatever...but not as bad as I hate Jeff Goldblum

He's the reason I hate Jews. The only reason.

Big thanks to any and all who recommended L’instinct de mort, part 1 was great, watching part 2 ASAP.

Boondock Saints is such a low point in cinema that any comparative betterness isn't saying much until you set the bar higher.

I wanted to see Baraka in 70mm at the local film museum last year, but I couldn't manage to get a ticket, they sold out super quick. Instead I saw Space Odyssey and Play Time, which were totally awesome in 70mm.

Posted this about The Imaginarium of Dr. Parnassus in the GD board:

Quote:
Pretty fucking cool. Beautiful imagery, reminded me alot of "What Dreams May Come." It also had some of the same vibes as well as making me think of "City of Lost Children" for some reason. Tom Waits was badass and Lily Cole looked abso-fucking-lutely hot. I also dug the way they were able to keep the story going even with the death of Heath Ledger. You could tell the movie had been shot out of sequence because he appeared back in a few parts even after the other actors started taking over his role.

Fanbois make it out to be amazingly deep and revolutionary, and people with "good taste" feel the need to correct these false opinions. It's the karmablade effect The movie has its flaws but I did enjoy it.

Have you seen The Devils? Just saw it a couple months ago, I really enjoyed it. Making that film would've been hilariously awesome.

As for Jodorowsky, check out The Holy Mountain. I liked El Topo though, but I prefer THM a lot more. At points it does seem as contrived and forced as El Topo (I wouldn't go that far calling it pretentious), but it's a good film. I like the religious imagery, both the spiritual stuff and the more blasphemous scenes.

I'm really looking forward to his next film, Samsara. I've been reading about it for years, it was originally due out in 2008, then 2009 and now the IMDb page says that it is in post-production, so I'm assuming it will be out this year, hopefully.

Anyway, recently I got around to seeing:

I recommend all three. The final cut of Blade Runner definitely is the essential version, and Husbands was the first Cassavetes film that I've seen, hoping to check out more soon.
