by live i meant untriggered, so actually live, not just on a stage

and they dont sound like this live at all. only the kick, which is triggered on stage. the snare is basically absent live, as he hits with no strength at all, to create the illusion of fast hits. on the recording, these weak hits are triggered and replaced by samples, making it sound like he is fast and loud. in reality, anyone who can drag a stick over the drumhead can play his "fast" snare

and his blasting is really quiet too

and the kick is also super sloppy live, even if triggered, so it doesnt actually sound like this quantized guitars midi drums recording style they have. dont lie

Dude, maybe it's to do with your definition of musical ability, you know?

I was neither drunk nor high when I saw them, and it wasn't anywhere close to what you describe it as. Maybe you caught them on a bad night, that shit happens.

Also, nobody cares about your eternal music meta-discussions. Stop overthinking stuff, it might heighten your enjoyment.

what do you mean by "meta" discussions? are you using the term without knowing what it means?

this is some plain old technique discussion. and the simplest version: how hard and accurate a person hits (and people's perception of "fast")

i didn't "catch them" any night, as i wouldn't go to such a scene kid show, but it's noticeable on every live video on youtube

and i don't overthink music-related stuff. the music i enjoy is usually the simplest and easiest. the one that isn't tampered with after recording. no clicks or quantizing or midi, just pure heart. you don't need to overthink to notice these guys don't play the way they sound on recording. or to notice it isn't very fast.

You realize that 95% of deathmetal drummers have noidea that they could easily fix this? They seem to have no control over their volume...I can name only a handful of players that do.

Also, I'd love to see you on a fully triggered kit and play something fast and it not sound sloppy. In other words, your whole "anyone can do this on a triggered snare" couldn't be further from the truth.

But I agree that the drum sound itself sounds too fake...that is the deal with the majority of metal albums these days and I hate it. Ulcerate has spoiled me :P

One last thing, I saw Fleshgod live last year and Francesco was killing it...I was very impressed.

I'll overlook your patronizing bullshit and respond tactfully: You essentially started discussing whether or not the drum performance was legitimate based on a bunch of shit you know about conventional drum production. Nobody gives a shit.

Flowchart:

Is the musician playing an instrument and making a sound?

Yes / No -------------> John Cage
|
|
|
\/
Is the sound interacting with other sounds in a meaningful way?

Yes / No ------------> You're listening to a noise record

funny chart.

I don't like the mix either, but if it sounds sick on record then I'm all set. If the band falls apart live it's completely obvious and they'll come under intense scrutiny because it's a whole different ball game, but when you're listening to a CD you're usually not thinking about stuff like that, at least I'm not. Furthermore, a sloppy performance will usually still sound sloppy even when edited. The fact that it's metal has no bearing on my opinion either. The average classical guitar recording has a bunch of edits and splices as well. If it sounds sick on record, mission accomplished.

I never liked this band to begin with. Didn't listen to Mafia because Oracles was a pretty sub-par record. I can't really knock the band for trying something new with that song even though the guitars are buried under the drums and keyboards...but this made me wanna go back and listen to that last Scrambled Defuncts CD

I couldn't finish it, but it's pretty much what you'd expect after hearing the track they uploaded a few weeks ago. Drums and keyboards are really loud and the clean singing is really goofy. Not a lot of variation either. Some people will probably really like it though.

How many songs have clean singing? If it's more than half, I probably won't bother with it :(

I have to listen to this again, but I did notice that the songs blended together. It could be mistaken for one epic song, like what Meshuggah did, minus the djent. There's still variance within the tracks, but you'll know what I mean by "blended." The clean vocals, I don't know.. I wasn't a fan of them on the Mafia ep, but they're all over the place. The symphonic elements sound good, more Septic Flesh than Scrambled Defuncts (thankfully). I don't have a problem with this album, other than the clean vocals, but it's better than Decapitated..

Youtubed it and I liked a whopping a two tracks (Betrayal, Forsaking). The rest is basically Mafia with 60% more Dimmu-fellating.

Oracles > Fleshbad Acockalips 2011

I like it, actually. The clean singing is good, what are y'all smokin'. The only thing I don't like about it is how the guitars are too low in the mix. Sometimes I don't even know they're there until the guitar solo.

Oracles is way better though.
