that vid is kinda cool but the picking style and note choice is almost TOO similar to obscura. also seems to be lacking that dark, immediate vibe obscura has, too techy and cerebral sounding.

very true. but since not many bands out there sound or have the ability to capture the style that was played on obscura i think this is pretty badass and will give the band a "pass" of sorts.

I mean obscura came out like 12 years ago so its not like this is the year 2000 and this band is releasing this right after it.

what are you talking about? that guitar players name is andrew hawkins. Colin mixed and mastered it but no one from the guts plays in the band.

First third of that song sounds so ridiculously similar to later Gorguts (I thought I was listening to Inverted for a moment) that it really puts me off. Last half of the song kicked ass however.

I don't know. If a lot of their material sounds that stupidly imitative of Gorguts then i'll probably pass. And send them hate mail. It's an unreasonable sentiment I realise. It isn't as if death metal is burgeoning with unique acts playing riffs and harmonies that sound completely heterogeneous to each other...

but at the same time like shred ganj noted, Obscura is a pretty old album now. Contrary to his conclusion, I don't think that makes this Baring Teeth song any easier to stomach. Obscura and FWTH are basically on pedestals. They haven't been followed over the years and years because replicating that crazy distinct style can't really help but sound like plagiarism no matter which way you cut the mustard. Are audiences ready or willing to have multiple bands developing that sound? Is there enough in those dissonances and techniques to forge various individual and appealing identities? Not rhetorical questions.

I suppose we have DsO and Ulcerate, but their sounds have other influences too, and are obviously branching into their own niches now. That Baring Teeth song sounds like little more than Gorguts worship though.

agreed to an extent on all points. The gorguts worship is shining through with ease but i was definetly bobbing my head and diggin that song a lot. I love all bands listed and dont get sick of listening to them so time will tell with your question of how much is too much with the "dissonant" sounding type genre you implied.

It's kind of in word purgatory if you will... lol. But yeah even I'd admit it's generally not considered proper or "officially accepted" word, but it exists. I still like to use it from time to time, adds emphasis

Dunno where I first heard it....

No.

And even if you forget the riffing for a moment, the drummer is even trying to copy Patrick Robert's drum style, albeit not nearly as effectively. Yes, there's a few cool riffs, but at the end of the day it's just way too similar to obscura without any other little quirks that could make it excusable.

nah i listened from start to finish twice before going back home, i was gone a long fucking time.

I also listened to a few tracks from the new dso on this walk. Being in the middle of the woods, high as shit, in a snow storm in the middle of the night listening to this kind of music was calming for some odd reason. The prefect atmosphere.

The new myspace also makes it nearly impossible to search for the specific band you want, unless you try it via google.

Unless I'm just retarded and can't find it anymore, they seem to have removed the feature that allowed you to search for bands by genre and location, thus, if there are thousands of similarly-named bands, one much comb through pages upon pages of irrelevant results.
