Re: The Film Thread---Movies you recently watched

the latest from paolo sorrentino. Pretty damned good, a few very striking scenes between micheal caine and his daughter. I'm gonna have to watch it again cause I was quite drunk. Although it was really good, wasn't as good as The Great Beauty. It's more surreal though and more subtle.

This was fuckin great. Probably not as visceral as it could be with a subject matter like this but it's still a very striking portrayal of a child soldier's life. Definitely one of my favourite flicks of the year.

Re: The Film Thread---Movies you recently watched

^^^ Agree. Something about films like this, set in Sub-Saharan Africa, that tend to hit me right in the feels.

Saw "ABC's of Death 2" yesterday and even though it had some good segments, it had a handful of shit ones right in the middle that seem like they were trying too hard. Plus, a majority of them looked like they were filmed using the same camera and cinematography that it felt that there was little variety in aesthetic like the first one. Favorite segments: A, D, K, W, X, Y, Z, and F(only because of the hot Israeli chick, lol).

I don't think that film has had a proper release yet.. if you 'gotta see it' you should try seeing it at the movies.

HELL YES that Asterix movie is the shit. Put it on once a year or something and still get completely wrecked by it. Though like Peste Noire, an understanding of French is like super necessary.

But seriously if you speak French this movie will fuck you up good, never lose my shit harder than with Asterix mission Cléopatre, real talk.

Re: The Film Thread---Movies you recently watched

I've got no problem with being told pretty explicitly what's going on... perhaps it's some sort of OCD-lite - I quite like it when things are tied up nice and neatly. Not all films, but sometimes it's appropriate, IMO.

Watched "It Follows", and it's basically a horror/thriller parodying 1980's after school specials on the dangers of sex & STD's, lol. It was OK, although the synth parts of the soundtrack felt like they didn't fit in, and what was up with the TV on top of the TV(cue in Xzibit)?

Bone Tomahawk - 8.5/10 - Western/Horror?/Thriller?

Kurt Russell, Richard Jenkins, Matthew Fox, Patrick Wilson

One of the craziest death scenes I've seen to date. Not sure where it falls in my top 5, but it definitely hit pretty hard when it happened.

Basically, in the Wild West, some bandits run into cave dwelling savages and cause a shit storm by kidnapping a female doctor and deputy, inciting a hunt for the two. These cave dwellers end up being total nightmares, and are some of the nastiest types of "native" americans to have ever existed.

Why 8.5/10 and not 8/10 or 9/10? Incredibly minuscule issue with one particular scene and circumstance. Other than that, probably one of my favorite movies of the year. Can't wait to see Kurt Russell in the new Tarantino movie. He's such a good American Frontier-er actor.

Re: The Film Thread---Movies you recently watched

Last week I watched Shutter Island, first time didn't really know much about it. I tend to avoid DiCaprio films. Didn't think the film was very good. Is this hyped? I feel like I've seen it on a lot of 'must see' lists?

Also watched Circle (2015) low budget film, The entire story/plot of the film unfolds inside one room. where a bunch of people standing in a circle have to one by one vote people 'out' of the circle. Impressed that the film held my attention for as long as it did, some pretty shitty acting, cool set and hooorrrible VFX.

Last night I watched Phoenix (2004) I knew absolutely nothing about it, I think I had DL it months ago after seeing it on some list on Indiwire.com.
Phoenix is a pretty simple film, but quite emotionally charged. The final scene in particular is very beautifully composed and bittersweet.

I think the film as an independent entity is alright. However, I read the book and out of all the book-adaptation films I have ever seen, the film absolutely NAILED my mental image of the whole thing unfolding.
Obviously that experience is greatly subjective and variable and YMMV, but it was a pretty special/remarkable/eerie experience the first time I watched it - as if someone had climbed inside my head and put my Cartesian theatre on display.

Good movie and great buildup too towards the end. For anyone checking this out, has that matter of fact-sort of action, slow burn where you get to know every character through the journey and bone chilling thrill in the end. Yeah, that death scene is nuts, haven't seen that sort in a western before, grinding my teeth the whole time and couldn't look away. Richard Jenkins was unrecognizable at the start, what a performance.

Re: The Film Thread---Movies you recently watched

hadnt seen this in a couple years and i just finished reading the book (highly recommend) so decided to watch again. captures perfectly the tone of the book. Just awesome stuff. Only problem I have with it is that it misses an essential key scene at the end of the book which extends chigurgh's character even further and his motives. In the movie, it seems at the end just the money is motive for chigurgh, but this is not the case at all in the book. I shall not spoil it.
