that bad grandpa trailer has more cringe than the Jobs trailer. looks like it's about 3 fart jokes away from being a friedberg/seltzer movie.

Why does it say "real reactions" when those are obviously not real reactions and its all set-up?

Re: The Film Thread---Movies you recently watched

The Iceman has good acting, some cool dialog, there's something lacking that I can't put my finger on ... maybe how the movie ended or that it felt rushed to me. Either way, check it out.

Depending on how big of a Amanda fan you are, you might not miss out on anything except some nudity. It's based on a true story of Linda Lovelace who starred in that classic porno Deepthroat. The movie isn't spectacular and I fault the content of the story for it. The acting's good and it's only an hour n a half long.

Man Of Tai Chi ... mix of good and bad, not sure how well it'll be received globally, people might check it out just to see Keanu or because he's involved with it because outside of that, there's nothing new about the story. I've watched a few interviews where Keanu talks about using different camera angles during action sequences, it's actually pretty cool to see/ notice that. Best scenes were probably every interaction the main protagonist had with his Master. His Master's actions in the end, I thought were conflicting. Last main fight was meh.

Boring, skip it. Sturgess was good in Cloud Atlas, Dunst is hot in it but really not worth watching.

The Heat was fun because of Melissa McCarthy, her chemistry with Bullock was good and I think it's what worked overall. I wouldn't be surprised to see them do a sequel.

The Hot Flashes wasn't the worst movie I saw this weekend but it's down there anyway. I think I was just bored or not in the mood to go on with The West Wing or marathon Breaking Bad and needed a break.

Odd Thomas is engaging, funny and has horror, fantasy, action-adventure written all over it. It surprised me cos of how good it was.

Saw an advance screening of Kick-Ass 2 last night.
Didn't live up to the original, largely because it was written by Jeff Wadlow, rather than Vaughn/Goldman. His approach to comedy just isn't as crisp, and the second act suffered a lot as a result.
Still a lot of fun, though. I feel like fans of Sam Raimi and Peter Jackson's early work will enjoy the hell out of it. Wadlow's approach to violence is a lot closer to those two than to John Woo/Tarantino, which the first one owed a lot to.

Re: The Film Thread---Movies you recently watched

It was a dick move and a dumb thing to say. There was considerably less gun violence in this one than in the first, yet he claimed his whole rationale for pulling out of promoting it AFTER production had ended was the Sandy Hook massacre. Last I checked, Sandy Hook was carried out with guns, not lawnmowers, machetes and shards of broken glass.

Carrey is a coward. He didn't want to be targeted for ridicule by the gun lobby after he did that funnyordie skit during the gun control debate early this year, so he panicked and left everyone else involved in this movie holding the bag.

What I find really dumb is that he pulled out of doing any publicity for the movie but by now because of speaking out like that, he's done wayyy more publicity than they would have done otherwise lol.

Oh yeah. I watched The Place Beyond the Pines the other day, too. I liked the first two acts a lot. 3rd was almost ruined by that AJ kid. I wanted to shove a live grenade up his ass.
Bradley Cooper is pretty fantastic in this. Probably my favorite actor currently.

Also, there's an Intheshit poster prominently featured in the background of one scene.

Plus she just adopts the same fucking mannerisms for every role, no matter what it is. She always acts like someone's mildly irritating, insecure aunt.

Midnight Meat Train
above average slasher flick. Weird seeing that Bradley Cooper was in this just a year before he became an A-lister.

Re: The Film Thread---Movies you recently watched

I hate watching films that have been hyped up. This movie starts off awesome, the chaos and the insanity of his household/family and the way they presented this with the pacing of the film was fantastic, I loved it.. but it didn't last!!! it ends up descending into a rom-com, chick flick like cheese fest and ends on such a ridiculously stupid note "they're in love, all is well yay!" it ruined the first 45 odd minutes of greatness. blah..

Hadn't seen this before, Not a big fan of DiCaprio. The movie didn't help with that. I fell asleep straight after watching, it didn't leave any impressions.

This was pretty cool, The way this film is pieced together is exactly like waking life, though the many resemblances to the film made the dialogue feel too scripted because of how similar their interactions and speech were to the way the characters in Waking Life interacted. Still really enjoyed the film. Mainly because of idea of meeting a lovely french girl on a train and convincing her to walk around Vienna with you all night was so attractive.

---------------------------------

Outrage Beyond – definitely a sequel to the first one haha. Was fucking excellent though, on par with the first if not slightly better. Like a Japanese shouty sweary version of The Godfather, can't go wrong with that IMO. I do find that his style is quite fatiguing in that the story chunders along and unfolds without pause. If you doze during a section of dialogue you could find yourself rapidly lost. There aren't many scenes which pause for poise – not that this is a bad thing, just makes for quite dense watching in a way. Solid as fuck though.

-----------------------------------

Ilo Ilo – Won the Camera d'Or at Cannes, and the cinematography was indeed delicate without seeming forced. This is a very honest film I felt. Portraying the experience of a maid working in a family in Singapore, it's something quite relatable to my childhood. In that sense, some of it felt like an insiders secret as if you had never identified with those symbols/gestures/social cues in your life I felt you were unlikely to pick up on and appreciate them in the film. But in that sense it was a superb depiction of the topic, thoroughly enjoyed it.

----------------------------------

Lesson of the Evil – The latest from Takashi Miike, this was excellent. Don't want to give too much away, but it lives up to his surreal gore-infused style without hesitation. Narrative isn't the focus though, and it is more a Natural Born Killers mood-film more than anything I would say. Somewhat reminiscent of Japanese comic book/manga things with a heavy American lean. Also, the film has either ruined or completely rejuvenated "Mack the Knife" for me, I am still unsure which. Very very entertaining, loved hearing people who came to the cinema uninitiated gasping and laughing uncomfortably.

Bruce Campbell Triple Feature
My Name is Bruce was better than I thought. Funny, and had a couple of good lines.
Alien Apocalypse was terrible and I will likely never watch it again. The tone was all over the place, and there was a quick rape scene that was awkwardly underplayed and moved on from like it was no big deal.
Man with the Screaming Brain was entertaining. No one has fight scenes with himself as well as Bruce Campbell.

Reanimator
Finally watched this classic. It was decent, original, and fun.

Deadgirl
I was surprised by how much I enjoyed this. It's a really well directed coming-of-age story that happens to center around a dead girl. Enjoyed the cinematography too. I liked how parts of the film that ignored movie cliches, like knocking someone out by hitting them over the head, the person didn't get knocked out, and fought back instead. /No spoilers

Drive
I liked it. Good movie. Didn't expect the soundtrack.
