"we all draw from a vast range of influences; from your standard tech-death fair, to other genres of metal (black metal, grind, slam, ambient), to styles rarely seen in extreme metal (classical, flamenco, gypsy-jazz). Though these styles, being polar opposites, may seem to be near incompatible, we feel this is a way to make truly progressive music and create an overpowering air of originality in the music world,"

I hate when bands write bios like that. While being pretty cool to listen to, I don't think there was a moment where I thought "Oh fuck, how did they incorporate that into a song?!?!11?!"

Those riffs are awesome. Reminds me of a tech death version of Akercocke with neoclassical influence slammy moments.

I have a big crush on the girl (Annie) from Formless:

Skip to ~2 minutes for the guitar playing.

Yeah, I posted about her in The Faceless thread, I think. She's legit, man, but her band wears their influences on their sleeves. It's great stuff, though. And she's an awesome player, too.

as far as female guitarists in metal bands go, Warface does it right. She's not 16 and not particularly good looking but she gets shit done.

Not to take anything away from these players, but I never quite understood the "wow factor" regarding younger musicians. We all know you pick up things quicker when you're younger, have way more free time, less responsibilities, etc. It's not about how good you are at your age, but rather how good you are for the amount of time you've been playing. Most of these "child prodigies" you hear about (Ana Vidović, Grisha Goryachev, or Thales Smith for example) have already practiced their 10,000 hours before they were teenagers while studying the suzuki method.

Tbh, I was more blown away by Tony Cicoria (a "late bloomer") when I saw him on a PBS documentary called "Musical Minds." This guy was an orthopedic surgeon who had no background in music for 42 years, gets struck by lightning one day, believes it to be "divine intervention" and decides he wants to learn how to play and compose classical piano music. He achieved all of this while still working 10-12 hours in medicine, going through a divorce as a direct result, in just a little bit over a decade.

What's your point? That's kinda like saying "If you like Origin but not Brain Drill, you're retarded" even if it's not exactly the same context. What I'm saying is : They have some similarities but Origin are actually good. Brain Drill just fucking blows.

I actually really liked Formless' first demo despite being obviously influenced by The Faceless and prefer Formless over the latter for plenty of reasons. They don't have bro-core breakdowns or retarded space robot vocals. Plus, in my opinion, the clean vocals are also actually better than Keene's and I think their solos and riffs are superior by far.

Despite being trully gifted musicians, I don't even like The Faceless, minus maybe the instrumental on the first album and 1-2 songs off Planetary Duality. You can call me a picky asshole or whatever, but I'm sure some other people feel the same as me.

Edit :
Now that I just have heard the new Formless song, I have to admit that I'm extremely disappointed. Sounds too deathcore-ish and not intense enough for my taste. My post just lost a bit of it's credibility. When it comes to modern sounding bands, I like my technical death metal intense and deathcore-free.

:\ I was going to point out that they're heavily influenced by The Faceless, but you corrected yourself. I like Annie's shredding, and her vocals as well. Its just that when it comes to her band, I've heard it all before. Probably, because The Faceless set all of this off when they made the transition from deathcore to a technical death metal influenced band. After that, that's when alot of deathcore bands started incorporating more technical guitar playing into their music. And ALOT of "Tech-death" bands are starting to sound similar. Hell, mainly everybody in California is starting to sound like one another these days. With newer bands being influenced by The Faceless, Necrophagist, Obscura and the like, it's getting harder to find stuff that stands out.

Eh, I'm not saying that Formless are original either. As you said, most modern technical death metal is becoming very unoriginal. Same goes for one of my own bands (First Fragment) i guess, which is often compared to Obscura, SoP, Necrophagist, etc, we never considered ourselves original or anything. It's not like it was my only main band either anyway.
Being "unoriginal" isn't necessarely a bad thing though. There's tons of good bands out there in every style of music that plays a style that is derived from certain other bands. We all take our influences from someone else.
The only bad thing about it is delusional people who think they're groundbreaking when in fact, they're not.
