Anyway, you don't have to put everything on the gold-scales....
I think you're taking Fredrik's excitement a little too seriously. Let me help you - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hyperbole

Anyway, they haven't worked with Bergstrand or mic'd an amp in like, 13 years, so I was pretty excited when I read that. Not that I have a problem with their tone (cept for maybe the original Nothing release), but Bergstrand has come a long way since working with them on DEI and Chaosphere, and so have Meshuggah. The fact that they are bringing him in and not mixing/producing this themselves again is already a sign that this may be a different sounding Meshuggah record. Get stoked.

He's probably confused with the tubes from the Sovtek MIG amps anyway.

They only recently clicked with me - but i've been digging it the past few weeks.

To be fair though, they don't seem like your style of band.

No, the music just isn't for everyone. Plenty of people would say all those things about Portal too.

True, id suppose. Portal seems more riff oriented though.

Nope; their guitar tones muffle the actual riffs for the most part, but they're definitely there and they certainly provide more than just lower register tuplets. Check out the song, "the Swayy", the entire first half is just comprised of amazing riffs.

Yeah, well they would probably say that about most of the bands we listen to on here, which is why im sure that he just didn't "get" them yet, as pretentious as that may sound. Or he is just waiting for Roman to approve them.

There's nothing to 'get'. They use odd tuplets with a quarter note cymbal on top. I can understand how could zone out to the music, thats cool. But I much rather zone out to Neurosis than Meshuggah. I just don't understand how many people could be into odd chugs with no real musical direction as much as you guys can be. To me, that shit gets old REAL fast. I love Polyrhythms just as much as the next guy, but i like to hear polyrhythms in conjunction with actual melodic direction.

They're not odd tuplets, just odd groupings of beats.

While I love Meshuggah, I disagree that it's a matter of "getting" them. The basic principles are not hard to understand, the central question is just whether one finds that enjoyable or not.

I disagree about the lack of riffs and direction, though. One has to look at the bigger picture:

I also love this medley, even with just the rhythm section:

I think it gives a more visceral feeling for the groove of it all. Has less of that sterile perfection you get on their albums, though the tightness of those syncopations still amazes me.

Of course, but how is it that they are so many(myself included) that needed quite some time until the band clicked with them?
I can't think of any other band where you hear it THAT often from fans that they disliked their music initially.

It's just a matter of giving them an honest non-biased listen imo.

I hope the new record will come with only bass without guitar, and sounds very fat as they are (Tomas and Marten).

regarding new material: I've been kind of hoping for more moments where Haake has a chance to "go off", if you will. See the solo in "Soul Burn" for an example.

Seems like it's been awhile since he's played like that.

maybe flayed will be more open-minded now that he's realized a lot of his criticisms were all a bunch of misconceptions in the first place. probably not.

I've noticed that too. For me, I fell in the love after 30 seconds of hearing "future breed machine". Haven't looked back since, and that was 11 years ago.

@ quarter: The solo in "Closed Eye Visuals" and the outro at 6:50. \m/ excellent choice sir.

If that's the case, then you should at least find something to enjoy on Catch 33 and Obzen. I find that those two albums have more melodic direction than the rest, Catch 33 being the (more) experimental one of the two. Just listen to the way the riffs in Personae Non Gratae rhythmically compliment the notes they play. There's that grouping of 7 notes that occurs in a different melodic context every time the whole "riff" comes together. It's kind of hard to point that out significantly in words, take a look at the guitar tab or something. Also, 2:17 into In Death - is Death is another an example of serious groove in melodic context.

I think the reason I didn't enjoy it at first is I didn't give it enough time. I just heard a lot of same-same riff/drum sequences and vocals I didnt really enjoy.

When I decided to really listen in and give them a proper chance, I enjoyed it. I think 'Soul Burn' and 'New Millenium Cyanide Christ' were the 2 standout tracks I heard that made me bang my head.

I appreciate what they play and I think it's cool. I just don't really listen to more than two or three of their songs in one sitting.
