I should point out that I practice, and play out a decent amount, so I need 100w at least, and a 4x12. I've already decided on a 1960B cab, and I' can get a JCM 2000 for a decent price, so I might go with that. Also, Mesas are fine, but I'm not really interested in owning one.

6L6 = more low end, brighter tube with a bit more 'bite'...

EL34 = Warmth and richness

It's basically like, Marshall JCM 800 (el84) vs. a Mesa Dual Rectifier (6l6).

i prefer JJ e34ls...they have a much tighter low end than 6l6s so my tone isn't 'flabby' and loose sounding.

good question(about the cab)

I'm curious whether or not Behringer cabs are that bad.

You won't find any decent head for under 300. Even 700 for that matter.

You can find amazing shit designed by Lee Jackson (Crate Stealth all-tube heads, Ampeg VL-100x series (1001, 1002, etc)) for under $400, and if you're lucky, even score one for less than $300. I don't think it's going to sound better than a Marshall TSL or an ENGL, but for the price, they can't be beaten!

I gots that one. It's a pretty good head for a more organic sounding distortion but it isn't particularly great for metal.

Eh, IMO. As far as decent goes, I think 5150. Soldano is topnotch for me. I wish I had 4 grand for an SLO100. Personally I'm not a fan of crates at all, let alone the BV's.

If you can find one, the Peavy Ultra Plus 120w head is an AMAZING amplifier for the money. If you are familiar with the Peavy XXX, the Ultra Plus is it's predecessor. Every review I've ever read that mentions both of them (most of them did when the XXX first came out) said the XXX was a step down.

This is the head that I am still considering getting, but I think it would be better for me in the long run to just invest in a nice pre-amp and a power amp ..... maybe a Triaxis and a 2:90 :flipoff:

No and yes.

A head is basically just a combination of a preamp and a poweramp, all in one nice little neat package.
You do need both of those things for "shows".......well, unless the place doesn't mind you directly inputting into their board, and then you would only need a preamp.

When you buy a head, you don't have the option of picking a certain preamp and a certain poweramp. They come together with no options really (except for that new Randall series with interchangable pre's).

Usually separate pre-amps also have WAY more features and control, like Midi channel switching and they allow for TONS of presets.

I used to use an Ultra Plus and I was never really that amazed by it.. the other guy in my band used a 5150 and it sounded a lot better. It's not that bad by any means though.

i bought the head used from guitar center about a year ago. the guy that had it before me had it moded(no idea what he did). the lows are tight and heavy as hell. the mids are warm and the highs are bright. only paid 700

i hear they're pretty bad ass but they heat up pretty fast.

my old band's guitarist used a solid state b-52 head.. those were pretty bad ass sounding for the price.

i run through a mesa dual rect. but use a crate gfx212t for a practice amp

my racktifier with a noise suppressor and my ts808 overdrive gets the job done for me. i turned down the overdrive completely and turned up the tone on the 808 and i have complete silence between attacks. i dunno if paul uses that technique but pretty sweet distortion tone IMO. i just gotta get a warmer clean tone.
