Societies will naturally produce things that most efficently supplement human desires regardless of if they are healthy. Whether this manifest in junk food or vicarious living via TV or the desire to socialize by gossip via tabloids, it's all the same. We are complex animals, yet animals still (as I'm sure you're aware) and even with a conscense, self- aware, and strong willed being, it is still realitivly easy to fall right back in line.

I agree 100% with what you said, I'm just asking the question; is it really a surprise?

Two questions for Nigel and LesserAnimal:

1) Given the evolutionary development of our brains, could human behavior, generally speaking, be predicted?

2) If the above is true, should we then predict human behavior to modify societies, by which ever means, to a common human good?

Meh. I like systems. Just so happens the universe is the biggest system around. Deriving meaning insight into existence via the working of the universe is just your brain playing tricks on you. Face it, your just a big ol' genetic replication factory, nothing more.

1. I don't know if I'm comfortable commiting to an answer. As of late I've been slowly falling into a determinist mindset which I've never been in before so...

right now I'd say yes.

As i just said in my post above, I love systems. So, the brain, the, is nothing but a system. The question must be asked what does X do when Y does Z? Side stepping "nature vs nurture" is it fair to say that if it was possible to formulate an equation based on the genetic information about a human and setting up parameters in the the formula for what situation would cause what emotional reactions resulting in whatever behavioral/personality changes that we could have an all encompasing formula for a personality? I mean essentially what we are talking about is artifical intelligence, except instead of creation we are simply talking about understanding.

Will this ever occur? No idea. Would i want it to? I don't think so.

2. I am afraid you are approaching Brave New World. I mean essentially all human behavior boils down to to reward. I mean what if you rewired/engineered people to get the chemical reaction that occurs post orgasm when they are doing slave labor? The epsilons were happy.

I actually wrote more, relating the subject to economics and just generally very large complicated systems and the attempt to control them, but I don't feel confident fully getting my point across and it sort turned into a ramble. Hopefully your response will focus me.

Alright, space enjoys a disproportionate amount of research in comparison.

Honestly, I love CC, but listening to a band fart into a microphone with lyrics about mutilating babies et al certainly makes the list.

I put it there to personalize my attack, basically. It would be easy for us to sit here arrogantly and deride superficial whores reading cosmopolitan, but ignore the fact that many of us spend our days listening to Chris Barnes sing about gore/pedophilia.

Rightfully so.

In order to survive, I do agree with most scientists who say that we need to expand humanity into the cosmos.

It really makes me feel small, but also it makes me think that out of all those distant galaxies and shit, there must be at least one (or a few?) with some sort of intelligent life on it.

Yeah man. Most people call it "cosmic insignificance", I say "cosmic significance".
