there were more bands influenced by something as niche as Defeated Sanity in the 2010s than that garbage. if anything, the "extreme" genres of metal were defined by albums released in the previous decade(s) (the whole "dissonant" thing that's so popular nowadays, whether you trace it back to a DsO album, Gorguts or Ulcy, or the nu-old school dm sound that's being released so incessantly ever since Graves of the Archangels, but exploded in the 2010s. take any year in the 2010s post 2013 and there will be an order of magnitude more DsO or Gorguts or Dead Congregation wannabees than there were Deafhipster copypcats in the whole 7 years since it was released)

the only way anybody would say Pillowfarter had a "massive impact" on "extreme music" in the 2010s is if said persons were delusional, deaf, or illiterate (i.e. had no idea what the words "extreme", "massive", "impact" and "music" meant)

plus, what Oleg said in his first post in this thread perfectly describes why this thread is dumb
I read the question differently to you.

No worries though.

So now that the dust has settled and given the key criteria was that it was an "extreme" record, FP kind of said it best, either Exmilitary or Money Store. Not a huge fan but I can't think of anything else creatively comparable.

If it has to be metal whoever really made cavernous death metal a style or the lithography album covers metal a thing, those were the big trends of metal.

I would say that even though EiF and Outre came out in the late 2000s, the last decade was defined by Ulcerate and Portal clones, maybe to a lesser extent Mgla clones.

Here we go again, alright LET'S DO THIS CUNTS.

Jane Doe was definitely a ground-breaking AND extreme album of the 00's without a doubt. I didn't even flinch when I read it in the OP. How can you say WTF you FUCKING ASSHOLE??

Re: Defining Album of the 2010s

I don't know how often I came to this forum to see nothing but fuck tons of DSO clones being posted and people tossing the word "dissonance" around, but I think it's safe to say DSO is easily the most influential metal band in the last 2 decades. The last 10 years have really set forward the coming of people trying to rip them off, and this still hasn't stopped. They're still popping up. People here saying Ulcerate would even have to agree with that as people were saying that band specifically was one of them, especially when Vermis came out.

As far as this Sunbather non-sense goes, I feel like that band was popular for maybe a year and I never heard their name again. I actually had to google just now whether their name is Deafheaven or Deafhaven as I typed this up since that's about how relevant they are, at least to me.

TL;DR = DSO by a fucking long shot, and I'm not even as big of a fan of them as most of you. I don't even have an album to name by them because everything they released kept people coming to this forum fucking craving news about new material for them. The only other thing that comes close is Colored Sands I think.

lol, not sure if serious, but I just never cared about what is considered metal AOTY or defining metal album of any year or decade. I enjoy the music that I enjoy and everyone else is free to their opinions.

what the fuck am I reading. sunbather is something you guys want to even being up ? Literally no one has given a single shit about that band SINCE sunbather. Ya'll mothafuckers high as hell. If anything, ?cailles de Lune from Alcest is a much better example of an album that took us into this decade that actually was a great album and still worth talking about today. Ya'll fuckin dumb as hell, you know who you are

Re: Defining Album of the 2010s

Best album of the decade for me goes to Chapters of repugnance as an album that flipped my perspective on what music could be.

If we could change the direction of the shit flinging. The answer is clearly some post-black or some dissonance band or Devourment.

What some of us may think as being "the defining album of the 2010's" ≠ said album is the best album we've heard from the 2010's.

Hence why I qualified with ‘change the topic’ as several posts have each already answered the question as best possible. Good to see the stupid will not abate in 2020 and points of view shall be as facile as easily quashed, forever.

Yeah, Chapters is an untouchable, timeless beast. Looking back now, I'm pretty sure this album is the biggest reason I stopped enjoying most other death metal.
The OSDM circle-jerking that's been blossoming hasn't been helping either.

This. I mean I still keep up on death metal but Chapters set a bar so high on bdm that only DS themselves were remotely capable of of reaching. As for the OSDM trend, I honestly thought that would flame out in fucking 2014 yet it just continues to grow as death metal reaches stoner metal levels of self-parody. I never want to be the old guy who "longs for the glory days" but it's pretty fucking hard to get stoked on ex-hardcore guys playing Abhorrence riffs in a lame band called Morbid Stench or some shit. It just sucks watching the genre regress like this after such a prolonged period of evolution.
