Re: The Film Thread---Movies you recently watched

Keen to see Moonlight, looks really, really good.

I enjoyed this alot. It's better than a single man, Tom Ford's definitely going to be an interesting Director to keep tabs on, IF he continues to make films.

I found it hard to get into this one.

I liked Arrival, I think there is a bit of a over hype for it. Some cool visuals and cool concepts. I think Blade runner 2 is in good hands.

Finally watched Gravity, I've been putting that off for year. Probably should have seen it at the Movies, in 3D. It's good but it's WAY too over hyped.

This one possesses that Angst - esque uneasy atmosphere, bleak and dark with something hanging in the air all the way thru. Glued me to the screen, recommended.

Anyone seen this? Playing near me, no one but me seems interested. They canceled the showing I was going to...I was the only one there

Surprised, Verhoven is well know...and getting great press

Dug this up, does a great job of portraying the deepest south

Made me want to watch this again. I always thought Deliverance was overrated compared to ...

Re: The Film Thread---Movies you recently watched

I could not stand La La Land.

I feel the only reason why it's so highly rated and has won awards is because it's set in Hollywood and has an aspiring actor, etc. Same thing happened with Birdman and Synecdoche, New York (sorry if you dig these films).

I don't watch romantic comedies or musicals, but I feel like it was done shit on both aspects anyway. The musical parts especially, some are just so bad. You can hear the autotune, it's very obvious they're lip-syncing, the songs were shit. The storyline itself is fine, but it's typical romcom, not deserving of the ratings.
The comedy part didn't fail, there were funny parts. Gosling's character was funny and there were plenty of good moments.

6 or 7/10.

Re: The Film Thread---Movies you recently watched

One of the rare "different" horrors of today, the first 30 min were pure excellence, unsettling and bizarre, later the plot evolved into more approachable and mundane (to an extend, still quite original if taking into account Hollywood horror poop) lines. Would still heavily recommend if you are into atmospheric horror ala The Witch, Evolution, Sauna ect.

I am way behind with seeing this years festival heavy hitters, I saw Captain Fantastic and Toni Erdmann lately and loved both of them, genuinely moving stuff, Captain Fantastic was on moments maybe too sentimental but I didn't mind it, Alexˈs soundtrack (Jonsiˈs (Sigur Ros) bf, Jonsi also made some contributions to it) wrecked me even more, I was a mess.

So many stuff to see in the coming weeks, aforementioned Elle, Things to Come, I Daniel Blake, Nocturama, Staying Vertical, Sieranevada, Aquarius, The Salesman, Your Name, Graduation, The Red Turtle, The Innocents, Julieta, Wild, The Commune and a ton more.

Especially looking forward to Notes on Blindness, no HD out yet, receiving stellar reviews, judging on trailer, this is ethereal as fuck.

Question Re: The Film Thread---Movies you recently watched

It was ok. I don't understand how or why this has so many enthusiastic positive reviews. Am I missing some sort of subtext? The idea that the protagonist is a genius more sagacious than her professors is mentioned for all but 20 seconds and never brought up again, bothers me. Apparently she's so smart as to embarrass the teachers. This detail is glossed over in favor of ceaseless hazing sequences. I felt that the idea of cannibalism central to the film was shallow, generic, and regurgitated at best.

Once the ending occurs it just makes all the other characters look stupid. If the parents knew all along you would think they would be able to come up with a better method of obtaining human flesh or talk to their children about it sooner. The logistics don't make any sense. Did the girls have the desire for eating people their whole life or was it developed once the girls reach adulthood, similar to the way one goes through puberty? If it's the former did they eat humans when they were children/babies?

Cannibalism is more of an archetype than it is (or ever was) a practice. A missed opportunity. The film has merit in camera work and visuals in some spots(some of the party sequences do a good job of feeling claustrophobic). I just feel like I've seen this movie a thousand times before. All in all I liked it but I don't see myself revisiting it yet alone worth remembering. The reviews seem naively positive for such a thoroughly mediocre film. I don't understand.....

Re: The Film Thread---Movies you recently watched

Was really that graphic as people are blabbering about? Had my doubts after seeing the trailer myself but Kermode lured me into excitement towards it nonetheless.

Meanwhile, look at the Cannes lineup this year: Haneke, Zvyagintsev, Lanthimos, Coppola, Joon-ho, Ramsay, Mundruczó etc. Could be an epic year for foreign cinema.

Havent seen anything great recently, Split, Prevenge, The Void, Founder, The Devils Candy (still a decently badass metal flick) were more or less mediocre.

Brimstone would take the throne in this bunch I suppose, was an enjoyable watch

Also La jetée is love, La jetée is life, finally saw it, damn it was glorious.

Re: The Film Thread---Movies you recently watched

Arrival - 8.5/10 well made and original

Passengers - 6.5/10 vapid but I would be lying if I said I didn't like the concept as well set design and technology

Her - 8/10 Also well made with good pacing and cinematography. Essentially a longer Black Mirror episode without the over the top dystopian bullshit

Gone Girl - 5/10 how the fuck is this rated so highly? Inconsistent acting (why does everyone talk/act so lifeless?), editing, dialogue, and flow. Shameless product placement and overall pretentious. I read one review that nailed it - "A Lifetime movie with a big budget".

Re: The Film Thread---Movies you recently watched

Saw Split and hated it; 23 characters was like 5, supernatural angle demolished any payoff, 'scarred ppl are real/child rape happens' and a twist so tenuous I have no understanding of the good reviews and I'm not even so critical of the director/writer.

Will likely chance the Affleck gangster film next.

Re: The Film Thread---Movies you recently watched

watched get out and the star trek reboot last night.

get out was great, it's the type of movie that requires two viewings to get the most out of it.

i enjoyed star trek and i probably should've watched it on one of my TVs instead of on my laptop. though i did enjoy it, i felt it had its flaws and some of the funny moments in the movie felt fairly forced. i'll probably watch the two other movies fairly soon.

Office Christmas Party. Has a good amount of lol moments scattered around a thread of nonexistent 'plot' points. Average light entertainment. Not enough actual crazy partying (considering there's no real movie around it).

i was pretty... disappointed. i thought it would've been funnier and/or quirkier, considering it was all Peele, but other than the rather underwhelming twist i found it to be an average thriller at best

This is a dope surreal Japanese flick. Interesting themes of society and masculinity and a fever dream of beheadings.

So Cannes has reached its peak today with completion of the festival's holy trinity (in my eyes) Haneke, Lanthimos and Zvyagintsev.

Agreed, I enjoyed this as well. I've always preferred slow, brooding, dense horror movies that aren't based totally off of mindless gore.

Cool shots, some visuals and performances I really liked, but mostly pretty circular
