Re: The Film Thread---Movies you recently watched

Deathgasm - pretty good, fun, slapstick cheesy horror. New kid in town is all about metal and finds bandmates to start a deathmetal band called Deathgasm. Film-makers are serious fans and you can tell by the attention to detail like there's a scene where they're in a record store and a guy picks up a Devourment LP and raises an eyebrow as acknowledgement to the other guy that "this's good stuff" ... so I implore anyone into movies to check it out.

Clouds of Sils Maria - enjoyed this right up to the last act probably where I felt it gets away a bit with over explaining it and showing a character in different light. Another movie I could stand Kristen Stewart in.

Spectre - very disappointing, there weren't many memorable moments and I kinda thought Bautista stood out in his small role.

Calvary - if you're a fan of Gleeson, don't skip this, it's really really good. His character in the movie is that of a priest and the first scene has a man come in to make a confession. He tells Gleeson he was abused sexually as a kid by another priest and was angry at that. He wanted some justice but since that bad priest is now dead, he wants to inflict that justice on Gleeson, who's been a good priest to his parish. He gives him a week to come by the beach where he'll meet his fate.

Trailers that sucked - new Star Trek, new Independence Day.

Re: The Film Thread---Movies you recently watched

"The Force Awakens" - I felt below captivated but just above underwhelmed, so just OK with this film. I felt like Finn should have been developed more gradually rather than just laying him out like they did, and Leia could have been a little more vibrant, plus some characters were underused. Kylo Ren and the First Order are neo-Darth Vader & the Empire(fanboys), only less competent, although they did cause some multiple havoc at once in a scene. Also, Kylo Ren's helmet makes him look like he has a bob haircut when he's hood-less. I liked Rey and Han in this film, they were good. Also, some cool action sequences. At the end, there are similarities between "A New Hope" and this film, probably the reason why I felt just OK with this film.

Edit: Was it just me or did it seem like Finn was wielding a lightsaber more conventionally than Rey who was wielding it like a heavy medieval sword during that one scene?

Kylo Ren was weak, and without the mask he looks like a Glee character, non-threatening.

It was decent. Kylo Ren looks like he should have been wearing a Fedora instead of that awful convenience store looking Halloween mask. The Dark side wasn't very scary this time

I thought about this before, but after watching TFA and looking back at it I concluded that the main characters are representative of Star Wars nerds that are thrown into their own fan-fiction.

Re: The Film Thread---Movies you recently watched

the whole movie is pretty much a fanfiction remake of A New Hope almost shot by shot. it looks and sounds good, but the script is utter garbage, and most of the actors suck ass. Kylo could've been interesting, but he completely falls apart after he takes off his mask. and Snoke is the most hilarious name for a villain probably ever. this one feels even more (than the prequels) like a movie made just to sell toys to kids and fanboys

Re: The Film Thread---Movies you recently watched

for the curious, a copy of the revenant leaked out. i downloaded it and it's dvd quality. i'll probably end up watching it later today.

i went to go see TFA on saturday night and though i enjoyed it, i overall felt as if it was just alright. for the most part, it felt too similar to ANH and a few things bothered me. i preferred kylo ren with the mask on as he felt like a total bad ass, but as the movie went on, he became an immature little bitch that would start throwing tantrums. on top of that, it felt as if way too many characters were competent with the light saber, despite not being jedis. i'll probably end up watching the movie again while it's still in theaters, maybe i'll feel different after seeing it again.

Well, its a screener season and half of the 2016 Hollywood heavy hitters are already available, In the Heart of the Sea, Legend, Creed, The Hateful Eight, The Revenant, Carol, Room and Brooklyn so far. Not interested myself tho, gonna distant myself from it and wait for HD releases.

i really enjoyed the revenant. visually, it was pretty awesome, but its story was downplayed a bit. i found the book and i'll most likely end up reading it.

Re: The Film Thread---Movies you recently watched

just finished watching the hateful eight. i liked it, but i feel that it and django are alright, not great. out of tarantino's most recent films, i still believe that inglorious bastards was the best. two complaints i do have, the violence in the movie is damn near comical and a few scenes are cringe inducing, based on what's said and portrayed. at times the violence reminded me of the evil dead movies or dead alive. still, i am curious where he'll go with his next films. i'm kind of hoping he does something more along the lines of pulp fiction or reservoir dogs. i realize that most of his films are homages to the films that he loves, but i'd rather he do something different.

Seen this movie hundreds of times, but watched it again last week. I still really enjoyed it, and the quotes are just too damned good.

if you enjoyed that, watch kurt russell in "bone tomahawk". not your typical western movie, but it's very good.

Last night we had a film binge;

Rock N' Rolla - Really good, but if you're non-English you might struggle with the dialogue.

In Bruges - One of my favourites, an excellent black-comedy. Again, if you're not from the Isles you will possibly struggle with understanding everything they say.

Also watched In Bruges again yesterday. Very good one indeed.

Before that we tried to watch Bone Tomahawk and it had to be turned off at my request. I did sorta enjoy it up to a certain point, but it very quickly became unwatchable for me. Couldn't handle the gruesomeness.

Watched Hateful Eight last night, by far the strangest Tarantino movie to date. Loved the first half, still greatly enjoyed the second half but I think it kinda got caught up in its own over the topness too quickly. Will say it's one of the best theater experiences I've ever had though. You really have to see this in a theater with a bunch of other people. Nothing quite like it that I can remember.

watched good x264 screener today.i would say still the strangest(not quite weakest) is jackie brown.this is another sergio corbucci homage with his trademark dialogue.better than django.not in league of basterds.
oh yeah,great ost!

watched new malick.knight of cups-maybe his worst anti-hollywood movie but with best cinematography yet.strange art movie.i'll always liked more his first two masterpiece movies, but he's on on another mission quite a time-i would say existential realism.
