The new Conan is not clicking with me yet. It,s faster and has a more traditional sludge/doom approach. Maybe i'll change my mind...

Had no idea AB was coming out with anything... sounds different, but quite enjoying it.

Hull's definitely been listening to Eyehategod.

Yeah if I got it right Arc is the first of four "mini-cds" where each member will get to choose their favourite genre on the cd :)

Really not into the new AnB. The whole EP sounds flat and just boring to me. I loved Salome, I love AnB, just not feeling this release.

This is really really fine. Thanks for the link.

Best track in the past few years though? Autechre's L-Event was in 2013 y'know. It has M39 Diffain on it.

Re: what are you listening to?

The new Obscura is incredible; I'm two listens in and I think it's on par with Ohmnivalent. There's a djent akin to Anomalous that I like, new musicians are as if the old band never left. Having spared a cursory listen to Muenzner's new project I'm surprised at how much 'Obscura' stayed Obscura, in whom the musical strengths truly lay. Immaculate songwriting. So many disappointments with Intronaut and Insision, I thought I was losing my ear for talented musicians; with Gorod and if Spawn of Possession release something in 2017 tech death is back on the rise where extreme varieties are flailing. Whomever recommended Serpent's Lair can suck a dick too - trite black trying to be new wave is what I heard.

I personally enjoyed that new Intronaut a lot more than Habitual Levitations, still not as good as Valley of Smoke though.

Re: what are you listening to?

I think Levitations and Valley are close to equal, the best thing on the new on is the nod to Alice in Chain's Nutshell. They do this thing with an odd time signature to close a song on the new one, but as riffs they should only be a transition, not a cycle of four and certainly no way to finish a song which should otherwise be broad, heavy. That's my take; I actually find the album tamer than the two preceding records.

Re: what are you listening to?

I listened to Gnaw from the latest AnB and i'm liking it even though i'm not a huge fan of this style in general. The music has a nice flow, the drum machine is super primitive but somehow awesome

Now i'm playing the new Intronaut. The second song Digital Gerrymandering is really soft haha.. but it sounds cool

These kinds of bands always get softer with age. No exceptions that I can think of, except maybe Minsk and Zatokrev, both of whom dropped some atmosphere and went riffier in their last records.

Personally I think Valley of Smoke is much better than Levitations... largely because of its title track, which is just sublime. Dat bass. Because of the inevitable softening, Levitations didn't have quite enough memorable riffs for me, and i'm not really interested in hearing the new one.

Agreed with you. Akroasis is a pretty incredible album. Very dense music. There's an added element of groove in some of the songs that I'm digging too.

If I ever hear news on SoP or Necrophagist one day I'll instajizz too. One day.

Re: what are you listening to?

SoP are writing a follow-up, it's just taking its time. Just rehearsing that music alone, Incurso was scaled back in comparison to Noctambulant. Necrophagist I've given up on, Anata is the one I'm most looking forward to if it takes a decade. Actually, it's been ten years now since Conductor's Departure.

Have just received Obscura and Cthe'list and both are to be commended for the packaging; while I don't mind supporting bands with a restricted financial presentation I bought Creeping last year to practically promo packaging, for that style of music not having any grizzly lyrics to read removes a great deal of the enjoyment, abolishing the art of the music in some respect.

You also get a bonus track with the Obscura CD but I only know this not having downloaded it.

Re: what are you listening to?

Having a bit of difficulty with the new Borknagar, too much clean singing and progressive music, while Semen Inhistface is majestic, no tracks like Frostrite; the solos are dreadful improv, practically replicate from past efforts.

Chthu'list is exceptional but tough listening for someone who doesn't opt for Demilich too often, I love the nods to Evoken/Disembowelment and the solos remind me of Mongrain from Martyr; magical vocal performance, sometimes the record reminds me of Repulsive Dissection and I have no idea why.

Ode to the Sun on the new Obscura, the opening riff should have been cut down one bar to make it not 4/4, that's my one gripe with the album.

Have listened to the new Cult of Luna, I can hear melodies already from Vertikal and Somewhere Along the Highway, and Julie Christmas reminds me too much of Kylesa and Junius to strike me as innovative as on Battle of Mice but apparently she will have more prominent roles elsewhere. Quite repetitive after one listen, my complaint with Vertikal was the lack of diversity while building on a theme, but my hopes are still high.

Pogavranjen - Jedva Čekam Da Ne Umrem (translation: Looking Forward To Never Die)

pretty cool. it's like a jazzier, more psychedelic Valborg playing "black metal". worth checking out

(the last one is Daughter - Not to Disappear)

Some of my most anticipated stuff (on the softer side) this year already out. Still forming my opinion on the Savages and Daughter, certainly not as enchanting and intense as their debuts, but still solid. On the other hand, new The Jezabels could be my favorite material of theirs, memorable, dark and infectious, the contrary of some of their older releases which are pretty one dimensional imo.
