another one bites the dust

Central Illinois Metalfest

After 9 great years .... I am laying the CIM to rest and 2012 will be the last CIM ever!!! We have had a great run and launched a ton other fests copying our formula ,,,,,I would like to thank the canopy club for all the help since 2003 as well as Vader Cabinets for the killer backline help ....also vendors like Comatose Music and Sevared records who was at the fest EVERY YEAR!!! We know the scene just lost a big part of it but time as come for me to move on to new things beyond music....so its time for someone else to pick up the slack for the dying scene in the midwest ...also can't forget the great fans who would come yearly to the event...your the reason its been still alive since 2008 .....

I am debating on keeping my music going but my main focus is my 3 kids and my future wife and family.....

Thanks for the great memories i will miss seeing your happy faces at the show!!!
Matt Bishop
CIM owner (2003 - 2012)

The main problem I had with CIM is that its in the middle of nowhere, and the airfare is very expensive since you have to fly to O'hare and then the airport in chaimpaign. Lineup looked sweet this year for sure.

At least it was something that wasn't all that bad. The second day this of this year's addition was pretty cool.

which "formula" was this? have lots of death metal bands play together? that is a pretty revolutionary idea

I would do something here in Indy, only if I wasn't a college student and had the money.

There have been rumors about the resurrection of Ohio deathfest.

Ohio Deathfest really took a total shit those last couple years. And honestly, CIM was cool and all but the lineups were total piss.

We get a lot of shows here and it's not uncommon to go to a show at least once or twice a week, so fest or no fest, shit goes on here all the time.

I know for sure I'm going to Cathedral Of The Black Goat Vol. II next month:

Was it when Brian Baxter was involved? I tried to go one year, absolute nightmare even getting my tickets shipped. I heard about one year where day 2 of the fest ended up being cancelled and the bands all got screwed over.

Best part of CIM was the venue. Canopy Club was pretty cool, the setup with the merch area was good. The lineups were not worth traveling for though unless you already had a reason to be around that area.

hey man, that's great for all y'all in Chicago...but i'm talking about another large scale (cool) fest in driving distance from the NY/Philly/Wash area.

Chicago area and Midwest in general is a great metal scene...there's gotta be someone with the savvy and cash to make something stick in that area.

There are some "fests" here but they're very small in scale. Play Fast Or Don't Think About It was last May but it was mostly midwestern grind bands and 1 band from Canada that was already on tour playing a warehouse. Alehorn Of Power is pretty small too, although the lineup is usually cool trad metal bands that Bible Of The Devil helps book.

Apocalyptic Crust Fest is on hiatus and hasn't happened since 2010. Dudefest in Indy lost a lot of money over the years so I think last year was the final year. In terms of actual fests that you had to drive to, Gilead Media Music Festival up in Oshkosh was a really cool experience and a well run fest. I did meet people who drove all the way from Boston and Seattle and flew all the way from England for this fest.

As far as "midwestern" scenes go, I can't really speak for what really goes on other than here in Chicago.

Actually, now that I think about it, there might be a pretty decent fest happening here in Indy on November 16th and 17th. This guy mentioned that it'll probably be a death and black fest featuring both local and national acts. Hopefully he'll release some more info. about it soon.

Yes. I think the last Ohio Fest wasn't his work though. I could be wrong. Probably am.

The last Ohio Deathfest was in 2005 and promoter was MetalMom! This got shut down on the 2nd day after the owner of the venue wanted more money from MM. Origin played in a club across the street.

Brian Baxter did it until 2002 and I still wish that this festival is coming back one day. Had a total blast in 2002.

Back to topic: I had a lot of fun at CIM from 2006-2008! Matt did a great job over the years! Sadly it was in summer time and not close to a bigger city so it was way to expensive to go there from europe.

One thing that I hated about this fest was the organizers merch guy policy. He even posted publicly before the fest this year something along the lines of "the merch guy isn't in the band". I guess he doesn't realize the merch guy is actually on tour with the band. And pretty damn important for that matter since they are MAKING THE BAND MONEY. I did merch for MDF X and it was perfect. The times I did CIM was a non stop hassle. He also wouldn't let bands have a guestlist, You can at least let their girlfriends in. Good riddance CIM
