if you think this was intense, the previous movie "Good Times" is way more of a nail biter.

glad this is getting buzz though. Sandler is a good actor if the directors know how to wield his very specific persona.

Just finished watching 1917.

Almost as overrated as Parasite.

Re: The Film Thread---Movies you recently watched

I loved 1917, the German pilot, sniper and flare scenes will go down as some of the finest war cinematography in history, and that’s not including their trek in no man’s land and then of course the final scene over the trenches.

Watched the golden glove after the recommendation here and it made me ill for a while, although there were several moments I could remind myself it was acting but he had the emulsifying body movement down perfectly.

Watched the ridiculous 6 and loved it my god I miss films that nail that level of absurdity.

A couple of good indie a thousand junkies is remarkable and the film with paul Rudd and Paul giamatti where they sell Christmas trees, the former holds his own against giamatti I never thought that could be possible all three cast members were exceptional.

But if there are any guy Ritchie fans his latest is really good; the plot is a pick and mix of his old ideas with some London musical culture thrown in for the hell of it but it borrows a lot from layer cake maybe it’s a nod to his former colleague or just outright plagiarism and hunnam can’t stick to one accent but other than that the story is a good one if not nearly as intertwined as his classic films.

I was sourly disappointed by rock n rolla so I was very happy with this. The scene with the pig was unexceptional they could have stretched the imagination some more and you get the feeling it’s a truly microcosmic world but other than that it has a lot of style and hugh grant is amazing.

I forgot to say the new jay and silent bob isn’t great but the method acting film with mewes is perfect.

This was decent and worth of a watch but for some reason I was expecting something more similar to Mandy.

Probably my favorite Netflix original movie so far, moody with great performances.

there are massive differences between the literature and the movie but i thought it was fun. i love the nods to other Lovecraft stories (*wink wink* the next Lovecraft movie *nudge nudge*).

it made me think of Annihilation and how much that story ripped from this source.

Anyone mind giving me a list of the best stuff that's available on Shudder? Have a little more time now, so might watch some films on there while I can get it for free for a month.

Dripping you know what I can’t recommend enough except it’s on Prime it’s the hatchet quadrilogy.

Watched bombshell it was incredible, it didn’t pander it didn’t fixate on just one aspect it was beautifully rounded with exceptional performances and stunning, almost real to life castings, Murdoch, Hannity and oreilly especially.

I had First Reformed pegged as a by-the-numbers church abuse story. How wrong I was. It's more Taxi Driver than Spotlight. One of the best I've seen in some time

Re: The Film Thread---Movies you recently watched

This leaked today but without subs unfortunately. It surely has a potential of being one of the best of the year, I noticed "Come and See" being mentioned plenty in regards to it, so yes, a mandatory watch.

Also, The Platform (El Hoyo) was quite unique and engaging sci-fi horror in the vein of Cube, it has its flaws but it glued me to the screen for 90 min, so recommended.

thanks for this. just seen it and it's really good (the "most helpful" review is actually, shock and horror, perfect. as spoiler free as possible and a perfect description of the film)

Re: The Film Thread---Movies you recently watched

Hail Caesar is a perfect film, I’m shocked it got the panning it did upon release; just when I thought it couldn’t get better Channing tatum’s reaction to losing the communist money at the submarine, sublime - as if he climbed into the minds of the directors. Ralph Fiennes, Scarlett johannsen and jonah hill were also big highlights.

Backfire is a Netflix film so bad it’s good; surprised it wasn’t called blackfire frankly. The wrong people with money came to the table.

Re: The Film Thread---Movies you recently watched

Come to daddy on prime. My god. Started off really, really well, a theatre piece, and then descended way way way down low. But great fun all of it.

Brothers Grimsby I don’t know whether to laugh or cry. To his credit Sacha has reinvented himself with this film. The worst scenes reported by the press were not the worst scenes, somehow. I was in pain both in a good and bad way by the end, when Isla Fisher blows the fan on his gaping asshole.

Re: The Film Thread---Movies you recently watched

Might be a bit vague, but can anyone recommend some really strange/"out there" films they like? At one of my jobs, they're showing movies every Thursday (outside) and everyone that works there gets to choose a film. My choice will be on 9/3 and here some I'm thinking of choosing:

*Alice (Jan Švankmajer's 1988 version)
*Tetsuo: The Iron Man
*The Holy Mountain
*Naked Lunch

Leaning towards either Alice or Tetsuo (as I'm sure many people that come to these screenings probably have already seen The Holy Mountain and Naked Lunch). But anyhow, any suggestion is welcome!

Psychological drama about a couple caught in some sort of quantum trap with some creepy motherfucker around them at all times. Pretty good movie, despite Jessie Eisenberg being a shit actor
