Death metal's "Changing of the guard"

I asked myself this question a few days ago and didn't have an answer.

There exist plenty of unique and excellent death metal bands, but most of them are specialized.

A quick rundown of some of the best newer death metal bands: (Not a complete list by any means)

Portal
Anata
Augury
Ophiolatry
Hour of Penance
Decrepit Birth
Severed Savior

-------

So, my question is, who is going to take over the central roles played by:

Suffocation
Morbid Angel
Cannibal Corpse
Immolation
Napalm Death
Behemoth
Vader
Nile
Deicide
Monstrosity

...when they retire? There exist several great bands, but do any of them have styles which appeal to enough people to draw the 300-1500 people that these bands do nightly? Think about it this way: Who's going to be headlining tours that actually draw?

Necrophagist are sort of a bridge between the two eras. The dude's aren't 20-22, but they aren't old either. Obviously necro will be touring out the ass for years to come. Who else?

I could see Decrepit Birth gaining a lot of popularity, as could Spawn of Possession, but again, these bands have a fair degree of specialization.

Bands like Suffocation and Morbid Angel have mass appeal. Their styles are unique, sure, but still live within a paradigm which attracts a huge amount of fans.

Bands playing an older style, but have almost no popularity:

Corpus Mortale
Deathevokation
Dead Congregation

Who's going to fill the void?

If no one does, DM will shrink as a genre.

it doesn't matter how good newer bands are, they will never come close to the bands in you second list, hence, no changing of the guard

I have wondered about this as well. It's weird to think that DM is still in its initial generation in a sense, with Morbid Angel, Suffocation, and Cannibal corpse still being around. How much longer these bands will be relevant, of course, is to be pondered.

I see bands such as Behemoth and Nile to be around a bit longer.

I am a bit too young to know how the death metal scene worked in the early 90's as far as promotion goes, but now it's so easy to get your name out there with the internet and all that it seems like there are none of these titan bands that pretty much dominate a scene. A lot of bands in the scene, but very few that stand above all the others.

Decrepit Birth unique? Dude, listen to the new album again, then Death, nothing unique about it. HOP is far from unique. Severed Savior, I'm not sure about these dudes, they could do it, but they have to work their asses of.
SOP surpasses DB, HOP and SS on a lot of levels, but all these bands seem more populair then SOP. SOP does bring something unique, they are the new thing in dm as far as I see it. But they do need to get more active, and also, they aren't populair at all, far from it. To be honest, people don't care about them except for a few die hard fans out there.
It's also up to the fans mentality I think.

Good subject btw!

All of that is debatable. I'm not in love with every band I mentioned by any means. The real question remains, though. Will any newer band be able to lead a tour across the states that actually draws like CC/MA do now?

I can't think of anyone to fill their shoes, and thus see a "depression" in the DM world coming in 5-10 more years.

Of course, the situation could change entirely by then.

Oh ok, I thought you liked the band, sorry for the misunderstanding.
I do think you are right when you see a depression coming up.
And the comments about deathcore and stuff, shit is quit huge, I start to notice it as well in Europe. A lot of bands and fans, hhhmm.

But it will have to change guard in sense because of the new generation of kids getting into it.

I would add Behemoth and Necrophagist to the newer list because those bands are getting more of the younger crowd into it with their popularity. JFAC and White Chapel do the same, but I don't see either of those bands having any sort of longevity. It's more of a novelty for a lot of the fans as it's a trend.

errr... The first two Behemoth albums are definitely not essential. Nor are those of Cannibal Corpse IMO.

I see Portal as an experimental metal band, not death metal at all, but whatever.

Kind of have to agree with Jewski on this as well.

If anything, I think experimental metal will be the next wave that comes up in terms of doing slightly different and newer things, but not many people will really appreciate it until more time has passed.

I personally would really like to see someone do something similar to Iniquity. I think that would do well in the future. Its a shame Iniquity isnt credited enough.

Suffocation fan Suffocation' s after break up!

Quote:

A dedicated fan killed himself after hearing that his favorite band Suffocation broke up. Suffocation is a death metal band from America and has brought forth amazing albums like Pierced from within which was released in 1995. (Note: "It still destroys many if not, any dm album out there!" One of the fans last words)
The fan lived under the name "Mole" and lived in a small town in eastern Poland. Upon hearing the news, he could not bear life anymore. Since there was no university who thaught Suffocation, he had nothing to live for anymore. Even the live DVD didn't help. In order to honor his band, he died like "Thrones of blood" with help of a Polish man which is known on the internet as "Szadou". The funeral will be held in 2 weeks with a Suffocation cover band performing at his funeral playing his favorite songs.

You make the flawed assumption that there are any such things as 'roles' in death metal... or any music, for that matter. There aren't. At least not when the genre is healthy. Bands have to forge their own identities to be respected.
