This shit is awesome. How do you guys keep up with jazz releases? This came out last year but I didn't see anything about it until yesterday.

Also, this documentary (an hour about the band, an hour's worth of them rehearsing) should be coming out this year according to the producer:

Yo mustang thanks for that heads up and that album. The documentary looks awesome.

And yea new jazz releases idk. Sometimes I read jazz magazines when I'm in Barnes and Noble or something, other than that I don't really have any ways of keeping up with it on the internet, I'll look around for some sites.

This site looks pretty cool I might start frequenting it. Has a whole section devoted to new releases, as well as reviews.

so lately I've been listening to a lot of Continuo by Avishai Cohen. I was curious if anyone knows some similar sounding artists as them? that's the style or direction of jazz that I can really get into.

Yea dude that album rules, I think everyone who posts in this thread will agree. I have been trying to find someone similar to him for a while now as well.

I can't think of anyone off the top of my head right now. He's really unique, that's why everyone loves him.

I haven't listened to the much but from what I can tell Seven Seas and Gently Disturbed are also pretty awesome albums.

A video of one song and an hour long set of the rest. DICE is Adam Rogers' new trio that does a similar jazz/funk fusion to Chris Potter Underground but with a lot more blues. Enjoy.

This video is way better, but that set is the only other material from them online at this point: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p6xbBecageM

Also, looks like the documentary I mentioned earlier in the thread is being shown for the first time next week:

Quote:
The film follows Chris Potter Underground from collaborative development of new work to a live performance at New York's 55 Bar. Saxophonist Potter's talent has been lauded by critics and fans since he burst on the scene as a 19-year-old playing with bebop icon Red Rodney. Keyboardist Craig Taborn, guitarist Adam Rogers and drummer Nate Smith are each recognized as leading talents, Taborn having been named the top 'rising star' on electric keyboards in the latest Downbeat Critics Poll. In rehearsal, band members bring new compositions and work together to understand each new piece. We see the work being played before a live audience at a downstairs club in Greenwich Village, with the added pleasure of having witnessed its development.

Posted a video of them before, but recently I have been listening to a lot of them, and just got this album.

"Viaticum"

Check out the song Eighty-Eight Days in My Veins. Such a nice groove, and laid back feel. I've been really getting into a lot of European Jazz groups, mainly Swedish, Norwegian, and Polish groups.

Do any of you guys, have Tim Miller's "Trio Volume 2"? It came out in 2008. Someone posted his first record "Trio Volume 1", on a previous page.

Reason I bring him up is because I was looking for the new record from Colin Cannon, I posted his first record on a previous page, it's called "In Summary." Anyhow I was reading a little on this Colin Cannon dude and I didn't know but he takes lessons from Tim Miller, and has been for the past 3 years.

Thought I would attempt to revive this thread because when it was hot I got so much good stuff from the rest of you guys. I'll do at least one post a week again if interest persists. Since it's revival time I'll do a few. Click the album name for the link.

"Where Do You Start" by Brad Mehldau Trio

This album is really awesome. Aside from one song every song is a cover. There are quite a variety of songs on here that they put a very nice jazz twist on. Among others there are renditions of "Holland" by Sufjan Stevens, "Airegin" by Sonny Rollins, "Hey Joe" by Hendrix, and "Got Me Wrong" by Alice In Chains. Check out this review of the album if you are interested in what else is on there.

"Made Possible" by The Bad Plus.

Not sure if any of you have heard of them but these guys are really at the forefront of Modern Jazz. This is their newest album, pretty sure it's all originals, which is different for them cause quite a bit of their other material is covers of not so easy songs to cover in a Jazz setting like Rush, Black Sabbath, Nirvana, and a ton of bands.

"The Bridge" by Sonny Rollins.

An oldie but a goodie. This came out in 1962 and for the three years prior to that Rollins had been on a hiatus because he was surprised by his rise to fame. He took those three years to practice and better his craft. During that time he would practice on the Williamsburg Bridge in NYC, hence "The Bridge". Man I wish I had the discipline to do that. Just stop everything and practice for three years straight.

Enjoy and hope we can get this beast of a thread going again.

If you have the time look through previous pages and check out some of the other stuff posted. There is some stuff similar to Herbie Hancock.

Honestly I hated Jazz all my life until I got into college. My roommate my Freshmen year who is now a lifelong friend, who actually hates Jazz himself, showed me this song and I was like wow Jazz isn't just really fast seemingly incoherent drumming, really fast piano soloing and bass playing that doesn't even sound in key, it can be a lot of things. After I heard this song I started delving into Jazz starting basic and then getting into more intense stuff. Not sure if this will have the same effect on you as it did me but it's a really cool song and accessible to everyone.

Speaking of John Abercrombie would you happen to have the first Gateway album @320? It's with him Jack Dejohnnette and Dave Holland. I have been trying to find it forever with no luck.

"An Anxious Object" by Mouse on the Keys

Mouse on the Keys is a three piece band from Japan. The band is comprised of two keyboard/piano players and a drummer which makes for an interesting sound. They are described as a Jazz/Post-Rock band. I literally just started listening to them so I can't really make any judgements on the post-rock part yet but I definitely can hear it a little bit. Cool stuff, I think a lot you guys could get into this who aren't really into most Jazz.

Take a gander for yourself.

I must have been away from the board when you made that thread. These guys are amazing man! And that song whoooeee. The drumming is unbelievable. I read somewhere that the drummer used to produce hip hops beats or something before this band?
