Oh I've already seen all these things, just never had them on good DVDs.

Un Chien Andalou and L'Age d'Or are must sees if you like Surrealism and experimental film. Bunuel is my second favorite director of all time (behind the other king of Surrealist film above him in this post)

Then you absolutely have to see L'Age d'Or. It's the second film Bunuel made and it's very much in the same style as Un Chien Andalou. Dali had some hand in writing the script, but he basically backed out of the project and severed his working relationship with Bunuel because he was offended by the anti-Catholic content (which also got the film banned for decades and incited a right-wing riot).

Svankmajer is also a must-see for anyone who likes animation, Surrealism, or just plain bizarre film. His short films are unbelievable in technical complexity and content.

ya. From Amazon.co.uk Would either have to crack the region code on a regular player or buy a non-regional player.

The best available in the U.S. is the Kino DVDs Collected Shorts vol. 1 & 2 and The Ossuary and Other Tales:

The films are great, but, as usual with Kino DVDs, the presentation leaves a bit to be desired. Not only are these three still missing several shorts (and almost all of them could have fit more films on a DVD than they do), but the image quality isn't as good as the BFI and they neglected to subtitle everything that isn't a voice (and most of his shorts have no dialogue even though there's text to read).

I bought the Kenneth Anger Blu Ray from BFI and it plays on my PS3. I need to get both of these, btw.

Probably not. But I'm told you can crack the code somehow. I'm not the person to ask though. I just ended up ordering a portable non-region player a while back which suits me quite well and wasn't very expensive. It's been quite a blessing since there are quite a lot of movies I've been dying to see or own that aren't available in the U.S. or don't have a great DVD release here.

Which reminds me I need to get this soon:

Have you seen Alice before? If you haven't, I'd advise you to rent it from Netflix first or something. It's not the easiest of his films to get into if you're uninitiated. Plot is very meandering (in a good way, though) and there's no music soundtrack. Lunacy and Little Otik are more accessible as far as his feature lengths go.

ah cool. It's very good, but the main gripe I have with it and with his following full-length, Faust is that there is no music to give a sense of rhythm. Both of them are less about plot than using a classic literary work as a frame and a character as a vehicle to explore different Surrealist transformations.

A lot of his shorter works where there was little to no plot had great scores by Zdenek Liska and the music helped create a really effective rhythm. After he died in 1982, Svankmajer stopped using original music scores in any of his work, either relying only on sound effects or canned music. This isn't such a big deal with his later features that have stronger plots, more dialogue (except for Conspirators of Pleasure), and more human presence, but Alice and Faust are basically 90-minute versions of his short film styles, which, without music, makes for a somewhat challenging watch if you're not high or a total fanatic (like me).

It also helps with Alice if you've seen his really excellent short films Jabberwocky and Down to the Cellar that have similar themes and motifs he expands on in Alice, although I think they are much more creepy in the aforementioned shorts. I also think the animation quality in Alice is a bit of a step down from some of his really flawless previous works. I'm guessing they might have been running out of time to finish it to make it pitch perfect.

In any case, it's still a wild, funny, disturbing movie that's worth seeing.

Looks enticing and very crappy (in an endearing sort of way). I like me a nice exploitation flick now and then too. Dunno if I'd watch this, but Italian gore films and Blaxploitation are pretty cool.
