Listened to Take Five last night to go to sleep, and the entire album is awesome. Blue Rondo is awesome. The layering of the frantic intro with the really loungy, relaxing jazz in the middle is so awesome.

I don't know if you guys caught it, but there was some awards ceremony in Philadelphia a couple weeks ago that I watched with the woman and her family and they were honoring Mel Brooks, Robert Deniro, Dave Brubeck, and a couple others. And they played Take Five during the Dave Brubeck part and his kids came out and played the brass parts and Dave was really moved by it. I'm sure its on the tubes somewhere.

Also, Mel Brooks and Robert DeNiro fucking rule so it was actually a pretty cool awards ceremony.
Using a fretted bass really depends on the type of jazz you are playing imo. For some settings it's alright like jazz fusion but for something like "Time Out" I don't think a fretted bass would be the optimal instrument. I'm more of a traditionalist when it comes to jazz and prefer the sound of a Double Bass to a fretted electric anyway, but to each his own.

and to all the bitches, those clean parts in BTBAM songs or that fucking deathcore you listen to isn't "jazz", so go listen to "Mingus at the Bohemia", realize you can't take it, then go away

Painted in Exile is one of the few deathcore bands that actually has some actual jazz in their music. But they suck, so...

The only other heavy (not metal) band i could think of that had actual jazz in their music was Refused, though that was only the one song for almost novelty purposes.

But back on the topic i've seem to have derailed, it was AMAZING listening to this Brubeck album again, seeing as i have hardly touched it since first discovering it about 2 or 3 years ago.

Lol, lot of metal bands incorporate jazz fusion moreso than actual jazz, which is still jazz if I'm not mistaken. So yeah, nooo idea what you're talking about...

I dunno, Cynic, Meshuggah, Ephel Duath? Most bands will incorporate it into their lead work.

mongeese has a point... you might as well say dream theater is jazz fusion... and meshuggah doesn't really count since he's not soloing over chords using chord tones, which is really the hallmark of jazz improvisation and jazz fusion. Allan Holdsworth is an anomaly not widely known outside of guitarists and metal fans.

dude. this is the hallmark of all improvisation.

that said, the rigidity you're expressing here is, imo, the reason why jazz is dying. nobody in the jazz world took the hint from mingus when he was making legit compositions, and the fusion guys never really thought about it since they're just rocking the fuck out anyway.

Just listening to the bass in itself is enough to make this album amazing

Fucking love this album. LaFaro is definitely my favorite jazz bassist, and Bill Evans is just unfuckwithable in all respects.
