Post Your Top 10 of 2009

Since there really aren't too many major releases coming out for the rest of the year that we all haven't heard, I already established a working list.

1. He Is Legend - It Hates You
2. the Red Chord - Fed Through the Teeth Machine
3. Katatonia - Night is the New Day
4. Porcupine Tree - the Incident
5. Alice in Chains - Black Gives Way to Blue
6. Lewd Acts - Black Eye Blues
7. Converge - Axe to Fall
8. Horse the Band - Desperate Living
9. Mastodon - Crack the Skye
10. Agoraphobic Nosebleed - Agorapocalypse

LOL, you funny guy. I haven't even listened to it yet. Actually, I don't think I listened to the CD before it as well. I'll get around to it on one of those days where you're at a standstill with music.

As of now(I'm sure The Great Misdirect will be number one in a month)

1) Isis - Wavering Radiant
2) Mastodon - Crack the Skye
3) Animals as Leaders - Self Titled
4) Devin Townsend - KI
5) Kylesa - Static Tensions
6) Converge - Axe to Fall
7) Pelican - What we all come to need
8) Lye by Mistake - Fea Jur
9) maudlin of the well - part the second

I'm not putting ten because The Great Misdirect is going in there somewhere.

I was going to wait to do this but ahhh wtf. It'll probably change a bit but...

1. dredg | The Pariah, The Parrot, The Delusion
2. Isis | Wavering Radiant
3. Porcupine Tree | The Incident
4. Katatonia | Night is the New Day
5. As Tall As Lions | You Can't Take It With You
6. Mono | Hymn To the Immortal Wind
7. Constants | The Foundation, The Machine, The Ascension
8. Caspian | Tertia
9. Irepress | Sol Eye Sea I
10. Jonsi & Alex - Riceboy Sleeps
10. Regina Spektor - Far
10. Wolves in the Throne Room - Black Cascade

---

I obviously can't choose what sits in the 10 spot. It may even be The Great Misdirect by the time December comes around but it'll be easy to make a 10-20 to say the least.

Since I have such a hard time doing lists like that, I'll just post stuff that haven't been posted yet:

Propagandhi - Supporting Caste
Wisp - The Shimmering Hour
Martyrdöd - Sekt
Exivious - Exivious
Amesoeurs - Amesoeurs
Ulcerate - Everything Is Fire
Zombi - Spirit Animal
Doomriders - Darkness Come Alive
Rise and Fall - Our Circle Is Vicious
Russian Circles - Geneva

There's a lot of stuff I haven't even listened to yet... so I can't really pick ten.

Controversial opinion...

The Red Chord sucks. I MIGHT enjoy it if it weren't for triggered drums and I dislike the production.

Aren't those two sentences contradictory? You can't say that it sucks if your appreciation for the band is a matter of production and obviously, they don't suck even if you dislike them. I dislike a lot of good bands.

But yeah, I also dislike the drum's production, but I got used to it since the music is kicking my ass.

No, they're not. I prefer raw production and not this overproduced sound 90% of metal bands have nowadays. Really takes away from making it enjoyable, for me.

I agree with that, but I wouldn't think your appreciation is based solely on production. Correct me if I'm wrong.

That's correct.

Perfect example of what I would like to hear done more with metal now (especially as related to production): http://www.myspace.com/mammothgrinder

It's pretty raw, pissed off, and doesn't need to be technical to be good.

I definitely favor that kind of production when it comes to that kind of music. With such aggressive music, the live intensity needs to be felt through the recorded material as well.

One of the most crushing record production-wise I've heard in the genre: (listen to the first song)

http://www.myspace.com/skitsystemband

For bands that are mixing aggressivity and musicality such as The Red Chord, I can understand the production choices. It's great to be able to hear what's going on guitar wise, but as I said, I would trade the drum production for the one on their earlier albums for sure. I guessing that's it's easier to record with triggers when drums are played at such speed too.

Ahh, you know...I can totally see where you're coming from, but I still have love for them. I didn't dig Prey for Eyes, but this new CD is different. It's definitely a breath of fresh air. They should be more popular than they are.

They're really popular around here, but also, they're from MA. They play a shit ton of shows at the palladium (25 minute drive from here).

No problem. As Jesse said, I can see where coming from but I've always loved them. They're one of the few bands that do it right and they stand out to me. They sure will never fit in because they're a combination of many different things, but that's why I like them.
