Good live band, I've seen them a couple of times. They'll have a new guitarist since I last saw them, which I don't think would affect too much, but Paul is a good vocalist with stage presence.

I'm going to CDF. I really want to go to this, but it's a lot of expense and travel time given that I went this year.

I wouldn't want to see Cryptopsy do a throw back set.

They're not bad but judging from the newest album they currently have out, it sounds like the band just finally discovered Repulsion or Slayer's Reign In Blood album after all these years, that is seeing as to how the songs are all nothing more than a mindless blur that tend to bleed into one another. That is, nothing truly remarkable, just average at best..

Yeah, no comment on the music per se, as I've never been big on Embalmer then or now. Just saying that they do a good job on stage, so fans should enjoy their set without a doubt.

Anyways, I'm massively stoked for a number of bands, Akercocke probably number one. Brodequin, Morbid Angel, Vader, Insect Warfare, Behexen, Morbid Saint, Malignancy, Nightbringer, Kerasphorus are all sets I'm looking forward to so far. Got my four-day pass yesterday!

Me, too. The lineup is probably already better than this year's bands.

Re: Maryland Deathfest 2017

California Deathfest is just a bunch of bands that played the last few MDFs for people who never made it out to the East Coast. Cool but not a single band I haven't seen (that I would watch) is playing.

Anyways, I got my 4 day pass. Would love to do some shots with fellow slam gang members.

Do you Americans have any metalfests that has a lot of genres? As far as I know, it's just MDF that (now) has different styles. Do you have an outdoor festival like Wacken, Graspop or Summerbreeze?

there are cool festivals that have different types of music, but none are metal FOCUSED.

for example, Fun Fun Fun always has an electronic/hip hop stage, indie rock stage, and a metal/punk stage (along with a comedy stage as well) in Austin. There are a ton of other festivals like that which may involve a few big metal artists (last time i went to Fun Fun Fun King Diamond, Judas Priest, Deafheaven all played).

Well there's the Amnesia Rockfest in Montebello... over 100 000+ people going every year for the past years, music genre ranging from punk to metal to unlistenable shit. It's not the best fest ever but this year I saw Gorguts (playing their latest EP in full...best set of the fest for me!), Voivod, Cannibal Corpse, Black Flag (as Flag), DRI (fans in canada had to go to the US to see them play before this year), NOFX, TBDM (Hey Trevor! ) and many shit bands too like Cradle of Filth, Corrosion of Conformity, Sepultura...

There's Full Terror Assault that is decent, but it's nothing near the scale of European fests, let alone MDF. I'm going considering I live close enough to drive there.

I'll be at FTA again this year. It was a blast last year, even though I really didn't care for 85% of the line-up. And it's only like a 1.5 hour drive straight south for me.

What kind of people listen to Tiamat? Genuinely curious since I've never paid attention to them. Figured it was doom rock for pasty chicks who LARP but I guess theres an actual audience for it?

Re: Maryland Deathfest 2017

I agree that this announcement was pretty meh, except for Candlemass, which is amazing. The announcement before it was also not as exciting as what came before. However, this is still shaping up to be a ridiculous lineup. I have my four-day pass and I'm really looking forward to this. The sound is so crushing in Ram's Head that this will really be an ideal circumstance in which to see a lot of these bands, notably ones like Brodequin that are more dependent on good venue sound.

I'm 99% sure Brodequin are playing Sound Stage on Thursday. They seem like the kind of band that would headline that. Brutal DM is kind of the Thursday thing now.

Fair point, I think you'll be right about that. I didn't have Soundstage tickets in 2014 when I went to the fest - any word on the venue sound?

Re: Maryland Deathfest 2017

I think Soundstage has better sound than Rams Head, it's at least more consistent. Rams head can sound good or super muddy during MDF. Plus Soundstage is a lot easier to move around than Rams Head and is more fun/no barricades

I love it. Haven't heard a single band sound bad there and the past 2 years I've mostly only been at Soundstage. They have decent food too and the drink prices are better than the shitty outdoors lot.

Soundstage rules. Reminds me of the old Sonar club MDF used to take place in. Awesome sound, more open than Rams Head

I really wish I was going. Actually I'm going to Ireland with my family next week, but even if I wasn't I'm not sure whether I would have/could have gone.

I got tickets for CDF, but I am trying to move back to the Boston area before October, so if I pull that off I may be missing that one too. Love CDF but I wouldn't fly cross country for it alone...

All I know is that Morbid Angel is finally performing with Steve Tucker back in the ranks and that is more than enough reasons for me not to miss it this year! That said, I am hoping that a majority of the band's set consists songs off of Formulas.. their best album by far in my humble opinion.
