To be fair, Viking metal sort of existed before and independent of folk metal. I mean, I wouldn't call Bathory's Norse-themed albums folk metal really. Same with early Enslaved (which is more black metal I guess) or Amon Amarth.

Troll metal is retarded.

I can sort of see how calling a folk metal bands something like "celtic folk metal" might be useful just to specify which exact type of folk music the band is influenced by (if it's a specific culture's).

There's nothing wrong with subsubsubsubgenres, as long as you're not an asshole about them and they are legitimized genres. It simply makes conversation between knowledgeable fans more informative, you don't genrespeak with some random asshole, that's where it gets annoying.

Take a band like Von Thronstahl, wiki says they're a martial industrial band, but that's vague as fuck and barely works, so if someone told me they are an electronic NS martial industrial band with neoclassical and folk rock influences I'd be able to mash all those sounds into one and it make sense.

one of these that is particularly perplexing is "war metal". Blasphemy, Black Witchery, Beherit, Impiety, Deiphago, etc. it's just an aesthetic value, yet folks on the NWN! forums would probably debate you do death about how its a "real" subgenre of black/death/thrash metal.
