Oakland fucking rules. it's hilarious to hear someone from San Jose of all dump cities complaining about Oakland. also, the sketchiest places I have ever been in have more than once been Baltimore. this is not to say that East Oakland isn't a horror story, but that's why I rarely go past Lake Merritt.

Oakland has most of the best current bands in the Bay and for that matter, the state right now. off the top of my head, some 'locals' that play here every month or few months right now: Ghoul, Stormcrow, Voetsek, In Disgust, Laudanum, Thousandswilldie, Population Reduction, Godstomper, Brainoil, Attitude Adjustment, Verbal Abuse, Deadfall, Abrupt, Fix My Head, Jesus Fucking Christ, War Trash, Migraine, let alone all the lesser known locals, the bands that play here from SF all the time, and all the good tours that come through. this is all while people here are complaining there's not enough bands and it's on a downturn compared to where it used to be.

on top of the bands, let's see: Oakland/East Bay statistically has the best weather in the country, it's cheap to live there, it's super easy to get around via bike or BART and I can get pretty much anywhere in Oakland or Berkeley within an hour and a half on bike, usually less than a half hour. It's even easier to smoke weed here than San Francisco, there's tons of house shows and DIY venues, and being in weeeeest West Oakland I'm right next to SF and the BART but only 10 mins from downtown. there's lots of food/furniture dumpsters and free shit being a warehouse city, and in general more opportunities for anyone into DIY... which is why most of the punx in the Bay live there.

yes, Oakland is full of warehouse districts, I live in one, yes it has some very very sketchy parts, but be smart and learn how to use it to your advantage and you will find it is a punk rock haven.

im from the central coast, have lived in san jose for just under 2 years and i don't really enjoy it here either. oakland sucks. i agree, oakland has an amazing scene but the city sucks man, its a shame. i dont complain about the lack of shows, i complain about the lack of shows outside of oakland lol. also, in disgust is a san jose band surprisingly. them and sleep are about the only bands i can think of off the top of my head.
