Metal Holidays - National Day of SLAYER, etc.

I like the idea of metal holidays: something to show others that metalheads are not mere loser outcasts with no means of self-organization.

One that I've seen kicked around that would appeal specifically to death metal heads is Onward to Golgotha day, the date of which, of course, changes yearly. Other possibilities include the 7th Day of July and other such specifically referenced dates. All Hallow's Eve and Walpurgisnacht have external significance already, though both deserve metallic celebrations in their own right.

Inter(National) Day of SLAYER has a good chance of catching on as a general holiday for metalheads; we all know the debt owed to SLAYER by death metal, the speed metal old-timers all remember them fondly, and even nu-heads are typically exposed to them as a taste of the extreme prior to either (hopefully) moving on to better things or (often) remaining marginal fans of the most accessible acts in the genre. Regardless, the band is well-known by many, loved (to some degree) by most and an easily recognized flagship for much of what "extreme" metal represents:

Quote:
Originally inspired by the National Day of Prayer that religious groups created to draw attention to their beliefs, the National Day of Slayer was thought to be a holiday on June 6, 2006 -- that's 6/6/06 -- but now it has grown.

Thanks to support and enjoyment around the world, the National Day of Slayer is now the INTER-National Day of Slayer, and it happens every year on June 6 starting at hour six. On this day, metalheads worldwide stop the pointless activities of a boring world and listen to Slayer.

International Day of Slayer is bigger than one nation, or even one band. It's a celebration of metal music through one of its most articulate spokesbands. It's also revelry in the spirit that makes metal great. So on June 6, stop everything... and listen to SLAYER!

I've enjoyed celebrating this and will do so again this year for sure!

I don't think so. I remember it going as planned. It was pretty sweet other than watching Lamb of God waiting for slayer. They opened up with South of heaven, then Silent Scream which was what i have wanted them to open up with forever. Only i wish they played live undead right after.

I think it comes off as a bit silly as well, until one thinks of some of the other stuff we celebrate either "officially" or for solely commercial reasons.

In my book, taking a day to listen to SLAYER and celebrate the spirit of metal seems more useful than most of these come-and-go holidays where people try to separate us from our money.
