Everything Cloudkicker

There is definitely a solid amount of people on here who dig this project, so I figure we can compile interviews, templates, etc. in this thread.

Anyways, I downloaded the Logic template Ben was nice enough to e-mail me a week or so ago. I forgot exactly what I did, but it involved trying to overwrite the template to my HD and not having the proper access permissions to save to what Logic thought was Ben's HD. The directory was something like BenSharp -> Project -> Beacons2010. I'll try to get a screenshot up later, but i guess the new album name is "Beacons".

Ben on guitar technique:

"Honestly, the only time I really play guitar is when I'm writing and recording music, recently my progression has come from just making crazy riffs and forcing myself to learn them. I have an acoustic guitar that I parade around with sometimes, noodling with various chords. Occasionally if I hear a wicked riff or something I'll sit down and learn it but that's about it--work and my social life precludes a whole lot else. Also I don't have any aspirations of being a guitar virtuoso, I guess I'm just comfortable where I am technically.

My old lady has a drum set in the attic though and I definitely jam out and learn songs and stuff on that--basically doing everything I was doing on guitar six years ago.

-Ben"

Cool idea. I love hearing about any and all Cloudkicker news so I think this is pretty sweet. Interesting find about the Beacons title as well. Let's hope he releases it somewhat soon.

Tckt15 07-22-2010 02:43 PM

yeah i need the new album

NOW

handofstone 07-22-2010 02:47 PM

I was hoping for some new stuff. I guess that's what I get for bumping an old topic.

Griever 07-22-2010 04:27 PM

Looking into the raw data of the documentData file from that Logic template, I too found what you are talking about.

Code:

Macintosh HD Users:bensharp:Music:Logic://BEACONS:2010_07_07.1
There are lots of objects prefixed with "bkns_" as well. I'd say its safe to call that the next release will be titled Beacons.

singularity 07-22-2010 06:12 PM

Yeah, Beacons it is then...I can't wait to see the album artwork. Portmanteau had an awesome cover.

By the way, have you guys e-mailed Ben any questions? If so, post them in here. That dude is approachable enough, but there is a complete lack of info about his music on the net.

he's done a couple interviews

Alec 07-22-2010 06:43 PM

I heard this album is named "Beacons", can anybody confirm this?

It's actually gonna be Bacons.

Tckt15 07-22-2010 07:19 PM

fucking. need this cd

guitarplaya18 07-22-2010 08:15 PM

it is //Beacons or atleast that is how the clip he sent me shows up in itunes. the clip was titled "seven"

I made a thread about two weeks ago with an interview i did with him. Someone find it and post it in this thread. I'm lazy

EDIT: Found it
1. What is your guitar chain?
*Guitar -> Vox Tonelab -> PreSonus Firebox -> Computer. *The Firebox has a software-based mixer.

2. What do you use for your tone?*See above--and I don't have the floor/pedal Tonelab, it's just a box <http://www.chrisguitars.com/vox-tonelab-071129.jpg> *that sits on my desk. *Apparently they don't make it anymore but I'm sure the newer ones are exactly the same. *I add a little bit of eq--just to clean up the tone and get it to sit well in the mix (see attached picture)--and a touch of reverb in Logic Express but I try to get the tone as close as possible to what I want it to be before I record it.

3. *How do you process your instruments? For the lead bass it's only EQ--if I'm using a clean bass tone I'll compress it for extra punch--and lead guitars only EQ and reverb. *Ambient tracks are nothing too fancy, *a little more high end gain on the EQ to help it stand out (depending on how many layers I'm using I might cut a little bit of the low end--below about 250-500 hz--to not clutter the mix up) and a stereo delay with a reverb send to give it that kind of wishy-washy "huge space" feeling. *Sometimes I'll get fancy and experiment with other effects but 90% of the time it's pretty straight-forward.

4. *What drums do you use in superior?
These pieces:
Snare - Slangerland 70s
Kick - 18x22 GMS
Clear Head toms

Some other stuff
Check out the third attached image for what the drum sends look like. *Notice at the end of the chain I send the entire "Drums" track to a "Comp" effects bus. *Check out this great article about parallel drum compression <http://www.benvesco.com/blog/mixing/2007/phat-drums-new-york-style-parallel-compression-part-1/> . *His website has great info about drum mixing, it really helped me understand how to mix drums and how to really give them their own space in the recording. *Here's one on snare eq and compression <http://www.benvesco.com/blog/mixing/2007/mix-recipes-snare-drum-eq-and-compression/#more-188> ,*kick eq and compression <http://www.benvesco.com/blog/mixing/2007/mix-recipes-kick-drum-eq-and-compression/> , etc. *Definitely mess around with the stuff he talks about.

*Something new I'm doing this time is compressing the crap out of the room mics (see pic). *This really helps bring out the decay of the cymbals in the mix, which I think adds a lot more energy without sacrificing loudness by compressing everything else too much.

There. *Hope I didn't overload you. *New release is almost done by the way!
-Ben

Griever 07-22-2010 08:34 PM

That's interesting. I saw "Seven Tracks" alot in the raw data of the logic file. Guess that explains it.

singularity 07-24-2010 10:55 AM

More info:

"Merch is a definite possibility in the next six months or so. New full length...let's say late August/early September."

Tckt15 07-24-2010 11:35 AM

sooooo far away

singularity 07-24-2010 12:48 PM

More info!

"Haha awesome. Yeah that's the title. It's actually finished, I'm
having a friend of mine do the layout this time because I'm going to
at least get some CDs done...possibly vinyl if I can find a good place
to do it."

Quit complaining, you buttpirates. ]]][[[ was released not too long ago and now we have this coming up. And it's all for free. Ben Sharp is the mang.

Griever 07-24-2010 02:32 PM

This is so sick. Props for getting more info Singularity.

I'd jump on the chance to get a Cloudkicker album on vinyl... brb jizzing pants.

Asked him if he had plans to do any more of the softer stuff (myspace.com/musicistight) and if he was going to make new shirts:

The heavy and intricate stuff is where my mind is right now, I don't even know if I could do the ambient stuff well anymore. I think lately I'm almost fusing the two. I'm maybe a third of the way through what I hope will be a full-length (i.e. 30-45 minutes) and it is a lot different than what I've been doing, but I don't know, you be the judge when I finish it.
As far as shirts go...maybe. I still have some of those airplane ones lying around, what size are you?

singularity 07-25-2010 08:43 AM

Nice post man. Did Ben ever send you an image of the t-shirt in question? I might want to buy a large one.

siegewar 07-25-2010 07:25 PM

Yeah, he sent me a shirt a while ago. It's the same ones he had before, slightly off-white with an old red plane and cloudkicker written underneath in black.

singularity 07-30-2010 05:13 PM

the best cloudkicker song is definitely dysphoria. that chord proression around 2 minutes in :emot-boun:emot-boun:emot-boun

Pwnsauce 07-30-2010 05:37 PM

that songs intro gets me so pumped

Perfect. Reason I'm currently lurking around on these forums is because I'm looking for any distraction so I can put off a mix that I have to do, but this is exactly what I need right now, excellent.

next time someone talks to him ask him what his writing/recording process is. i get the feeling he writes as he records like bulb does.

you called it.

...

Describe your process… do you sit down to record with the songs already competed, or is it more of an organic approach while tracking?

I write the songs as I record them, so all I need is a catalyst in the form of an opening riff or idea to play with and it goes from there. Usually that happens one of two ways; either I doodle around on guitar and happen to play something that sounds cool, or I’m in the shower and I think of a nifty drum beat and program it while wearing a towel after I get out. So I guess it’s the latter.

Hey guys I think I figured out who the dude on the cover of ]]][[[ is. I believe it's a guy named Ned Kelly.

Here's some undoctored artwork of the guy:
