no immortal-pure holocaust in any of your lists!? bah!
into the pit
06-06-2004, 08:27 PM
well, pure holocaust is imo the last bearable recording done by immortal... and certainly not an ultimative album...
but it's a matter of taste anyway...:)

Nope, because the 5 albums I mentioned give me a special feeling due to the atmosphere the music radiates. Can't say that of Pure Holocast. That's just plain fucking black metal

Even if it isn't BM in its truest form, I can't believe nobody has mentioned Storm of the Light's Bane by Dissection.
Fisting The Dead
06-16-2004, 12:35 AM
That is a good point. Nobody has mentioned anything by Dissection. It seems no one really gives a damn about them. Well, I'm gonna break the ice here. Just so you guys know, I don't like a lot of generic/traditional black metal, so this is going to be weird for you:
1) Emperor-Anthems to the Welkin at Dusk (got sick of AtNE)
2) Mayem-De Mysteriis
3) Dissection-Storm of the Light's Bane (THAT'S RIGHT!)
4) Taake-Over Bjoregvin Graater Himmerik
5) Dimmu Borgir-Spiritual Black Dimensions
But I think that Windir deserves a very honorable mention. It's a shame that the singer passed away. Likferd was a borderline genius album, in my opinion. I think they would have gone very far if he were still around today.

Not a bad list. I think that the CoF album you mentioned was brilliant, but I don't think that either that album nor Deathcrush is really black metal. Otherwise, it's a good list (but you should take off that Darkthrone.) :p

Deleted a lame rant about Cradle and Dimmu not being black metal. Like we haven't had that discussion before!
best black metal albums
Mayhem - De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas
Venom- Black Metal
Venom- Welcome to hell
Venom- At War With Satan
Celtic Frost-Morbid Tales
Celtic Frost- To Mega Therion
Bathory-Under the Sign of The Black Mark RIP
Bathory- Blood Fire Death RIP
Well Lately I been listening to alot of punk stuff. I went to see the jabbers, and murder junkies at The Middleast in Boston, MA.
If anyone knows who they are they will know Merle Allin, and Dino Sex. Very cool stuff, Merle is the brother of the late great - GG Allin. The one thing I can say is he did what he wanted, and I will always respect that.
Now, onto the list:
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
1. Mayhem - 'Live in Leipzig'
2. Marduk - 'World Funeral'
3. Dissection - 'Storm of the Light's Bane'
4. Gorgoroth - 'Pentagram'
5. Dark Funeral 'The Secrets of the Black Arts'
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I like many others like Burzum, Empror, Incantation, Deinonychus, Mysticum, etc ... But this was off top of my head, and I was gonna include Mayhem 'Chimera' but decided 5 different bands, oh and 1 (1 live album, I had 2. Edited) live albums. I personally favor live music over studio. But in truth, its hard to really nail down a great recording of live music. Being there, is the only real way to get any bands true sound.

I agree to some extent. In well recorded/mixed studio albums, I prefer to listen to it than live albums. Although I don't think you can capture a real live sound on tape, it just doesn't happen. I do think black metal has come the closet to doing this though, because it's a genre with the rawest most thrashing guitar tones ever. It pisses me off when bands like Pantera have this mega tight, almost computerized guitar sound. I hate it!
I'm not gonna bother listing my fave albums.. they're all been said, except Cadaver - Necrosis.

I think that depends on where the boundaries of black metal end, and death metal begins for the listener.

'shining - livets ändhallplats'
I only heard this recently for the first time and like it plenty.
Allegedly there will be a Shining IV later this year.
There's a certain sameness to their work but each album is worth having, imo.

At first I was laughing at some of the lists here, but even though Sodom, Bathory,...( among other selections) have little to do with Black Metal it's interesting to see the variety of people on this Board now.
Although some of our posters have moved on ( I miss Frost, Murder :) ) and although some of the recent arrivals seem to have wandered in by accident from the Ozzfest Forum well, wtf, different opinions make for interesting clashes of taste.
