Thanks for posting those. Those are some very advanced micing techniques. That kind of multi mic overhead micing is really technical. Also Andy's sbare sound is mostly trigger and thats why he picked that mic for the snare. A normal spaced pair or x/y configuration piar of overhead mics is what I would suggest most people use.

Looks like from here the 57 is pointing somewhere between the area at the edge of the dust cap to further into the paper of the speaker. May actually be closer to the outer edge where its quite bassy. This maybe be one of 2 mics. Not the Sneap method of directly into the dust cap. I usually have one mic like this and one at the center of the dust cap and mix the two.

sweet are u using a 57 at the center of the dust cap as well?

I mean do u use a low frequency mic to pick up the low end better or use the same 57?

Yep, I was trying to say I use 2 mics. 2 57s. One at the center of the cap and one somewhere else to get a lower range. Get them both in phase and you can record them seperately or combine into one track.

A couple of weeks ago, i recorded the new Severed Savior song and used a combo of a 57 pointed towards the end of the woofer and a 421 right on the cap and got a great result. Have you had a chance to hear the new song yet colin? And i'm not talking about the version on Myspace that takes away all sonic quality to any song. I'd love to hear what you thought of the song turned out in your opinion.

I did hear that song on a car stereo. I was impressed with how tight the band is on that one. I cant remember enough to critique it though. But I do remember is was just a quick demo.

Ive done that before. They may not use all 4 of these though. Maybe just seeing which 2 work best together. Or recording all 4 and using whatever works in the mix. They surely dont mix all 4 on the board. These are for 2 or 4 seperate tracks.

Hey good job, I heard that on Andy's forum a while back, real nice. I guess your name is Siezure there, that forum rules. Mind sharing what sort of plug-ins were used if any? I'll be posting some rough mixes of this dm band that i started today, they are pretty good.

File has expired for me now. But yeah you can make a 414 work I guess. Its taste. But condenser mics give you a big top and bottom. And the guitar range is mainly between 100 hz and 4500 hz. Depends on the tuning. You dont need whats below or above that. So thats one reason why the 57 is king. It limits the range and lets you put the best part forward. For this music the 414 is not really the thing. But for recording clean guitars its nice.

Also dynamic mics give you a more compressed kind of sound. Less open and more direct to the point.

I like a TC native compressor on snare, ultrafunk compressor on kick, T racks multiband limiter/sonic maximizer plug in on bass. and some obvious EQ on almost every track with T-racks EQ and mostly Waves Q10 EQ.

Masterbuss (colin is gonna kill me for this..) was: Waves EQ, T racks Compressor at a pretty fast setting, Rbass plug in set to 45 hz just adding a bit, Izotope ozone for some multiband stereo imaging/narrowing and an L2 limiter.

But it wasn't a realy good mix anyway so please don't do it all like i did!! :dot1:

oh and colin, i think i'm coming to the gig in/near katwijk so i could pass you those mags/reviews then!!
