View Full Version : Who do you guys think should join Cryptopsy as second Guitarist?

A burning issue... now that Alex has stepped into Jon's spot, I'd really like to see another guitarist join them permanently and complete them as a band. It's a shame they parted ways with Dan Mongrain, but it's cool that he's keeping Martyr going.
I'm assuming they want an excellent technical giutarist (natch) from the quebec scene; should they rope Miguel Roy back in again? Anybody have any suggestions? More importantly, does anyone know if they've found a guitarist yet... if so who is it?

HE's a friend of jake (the soundguy) who might be the next cryptopsy guitarist
but my guess is
BRING BACK STEVE THIBEAULT!
...whishful thinking....

Thanks for the info Carrionshine. Chazm do you mean Gorguts mastermind/genius Luc LeMay? He's certainly got the chops, but Cryptopsy might be pushed beyond the realms of technical insanity... by no means a bad thing.
Unfortunately I think Steve Thibault is still working for a beer company: a constant supply of beer would be a hard thing to walk away from! ;)

HaHa, nice one Cloaca... "Whisper Obscura!" :emot-eek: That would be a technical mindfuck sure to explode heads "Scanners" style!
More wishful thinking: maybe J.F. from Kataklysm could jump ship.. as long as he reverted to their far superior, brutal style on "Mysterious Gate of Reincarnation, "Sorcery" and "Temple of Knowledge."

Personally I'd love to see my friend Randy try out, the guy is the most talented guitarist I know and I'm not just saying yeah he can play heavy stuff and rock out....The guy knows theory like the back of his hand and he's extreemly diverse. He plays anything from death metal to classical. He use to practice like 7 hours a day and dedicate like a whole lot of time playing Bach for practice. I think personally he'd be a killer guitarist who is not already in a signed metal band. I'm curious as to see who they find. I told him he should send in his stuff but he's too shy too, he thinks he's not good enough.

All I know is that more important than finding someone who can just play their songs, is finding someone who can WRITE high quality, extreme music.

Exactly the reason why I suggested my friend Randy, talented guitarist who could handle Cryptopsy songs and write his own stuff that I know they'll like. When they played with his old band Tension Point last year they apparently liked their songs from what I was told.

Do you have any of his work that you can share with us? Or is there a place online where we can have a listen.

well, i have sent a bio and a cd...the bio seemed to check out. im guessing the distance factor (austin, tx) would exempt me from qualifying, because the music i sent should have been more than reassuring of my capablilities.
oh well,...guess ill have to show the proof's in the pudding whenever they come thru town
for referrence, ask Paul or Clinton of Origin, Tom Stevens of Nokturnel (ex-Incantation, Morpheus Descends) Chris of Psyopus or Mike of The Red Chord, Jason of Watchtower, just to name a few...
I'm a huge Crypt fan, i have an associates degree in music composition and theory and I can back up everything I say...plus, I play the SICKEST guitar ever (7string, 36 fret custom). no joke!!!

That would fucking totally own man. Could you imagine that? Insidious Decrepancy mixed with Cryptopsy. Now that would be sick! Also, the Luc Lemay thing would be nice too. Luc doing backup vox to the Worm of old would be a killer contrast.

Whoa, dudes thanks for the amazing responses. As per usual, Cryptopsy fans know where it's at. These suggestions are awesome. I'd like to hear Randy's Tension Point work. I'm sure the prospect seems daunting, but tell him to go for it and send in his bio to Cryptopsy!!
Shawn Whitaker sounds like a brilliant idea and to the dude with endorsements from Origin, Psyopus and The Red Chord, well, you'd get my vote.
Honestly, the desire to see Cryptopsy as a complete unit instead of having a revolving door policy almost exceeds my need for the new album! Anyone know what Jeremy Turner (ex-Origin) is up to now that he's not playing with Cannibal Corpse?

someone who can actually compare with jon as a songwriter. alex apparently cannot.

Well I would like that someone of a different kind of music join Cryptopsy , so they could add new elements for future sounding. And I think someone from Canada , because that would be easier for everyone in Cryptopsy.

But as it said before I think no one can replace Jon as far as song writing goes for Cryptopsy. I love his solos, the style of them and their guitar sound.

There's not much of his stuff recorded with his old band and the stuff he wrote for that band was kinda dummed down a bit I find. He's an amazing soloist and that's where you truly hear his talent. Here's one of the tracks that they wrote in his old band: http://www.myspace.com/tensionpoint. It's not the greatest thing he's written but I love that track personally. He's written a ton of amazing songs/riffs.
Check them out

didn't luc say that steve hurdle was responsible for the weirdness on obscura? if you listen to from wisdom to hate you can definitely hear that a lot of that same weirdness is gone and, coincidently, dan mongrain replaced steve on that album. i don't know if steve can keep up with cryptopsy (obscura was more midpaced), but id sure like to see him try. i also would love to see miguel roy come back.

I've read somewhere (a reliable source) that the second guitarist for the upcoming tour will be Chris Donaldson from the band Mythosis

luc lemay join cryptopsy? ha ha ha like cloaca said that would rule beyond ruling. but i think maybe the reference was to dan mongrain not luc since dan was allready in cryptopsy for a short time but left to continue martyr:hbang32en anyways maybe not. it dosent really matter. but luc lemay joining ANY BAND EVER would be the shit!

Reinert I haven't heard anything about any bad blood between Cryptopsy and Kataklysm. All I know is that Kataklysm started out as brutal beyond belief and to most minds, became a bit more restrained and as a result have been standing in Cryptopsy's formidable shadow ever since. That's an opinion of course: I like "The Prophecy" very much but Kataklysm were at their very best with "Mystical Gate of Reincarnation," "Sorcery" and "Temple of Knowledge!" When you hear Sylvain Houde go off, the listener can only :toilet: himself in response. The music has definitely become less technical and mind-bending since that era.
Even though "Once Was Not" may divide fans, Cryptopsy will always have my vote. It's my opinion, but if forced to choose between the two bands, I'd go with Cryptopsy.
Thanks for the info Carrionshine. Haven't heard Chris Donaldson's work.. well, not yet! How would you describe Mythosis to the uninitiated?

Well, regretfully i do not, being that i favor more the computer illiterate side of humanity, but once i have a more polished recording to present, ill probably put it on myspace (for the project ive carried on my shoulders, bandmates or not, Zymotic. hopefully soon ill have some guitar contributions for the band A Minute Will Reverse, as well :devilange ) anyway, maybe in a few months i can get a presentable representation of my project going...but it would be more ideal to be playing for the Cryptsters!
