i would love to see some old painting style with lots of gore or graveyard ghouls(cryptopsy/graves being exhumed). ANGEL SKIN GARDEN would be a cool cover, and carrionshine goes with the gore..really i just hope to see the artwork match the bands music/lyrics... the first three (demo, blasphemy/nsv) all have good artwork... what do you guys think?

I love album artwork, so I hope its good. An old school painting would be sweet, and some gore would be nice. But im sure that it wont have gore, it will probably be some abstract kinda shit, since the title Once Was Not is sort of abstract.

Gore is almost always lame..
In the sense that when I see gore, I almost automatically don't care. I just ignore the theme.

I agree that the period painting used for "None So Vile" has to be their most classic album cover... it gives off an utterly sinister and malevolent vibe that is a perfect indication of awaits the listener.
BUT as someone said this is Cryptopsy, a band that breaks from most metal conventions and has a unique identity. I personally like the work of their longtime artwork collaborator Francois. The batdemon on the cover of "Whisper Supremacy" is iconic and is now one of the band's logos. While it was different, I also liked the artwork for "And Then You'll Beg:" again, all the artwork was expertly conceptualised to tie into together... the victim (or the listener) awaiting to be crushed by the oncoming train, the Matrix intro sample, different inlay tray view, album outro. I dig the unapologetically brutal album covers that most Unique Leader bands or Cannibal Corpse choose, but don't think Cryptopsy will do straightahead gore. I'd like to see Francois' abstract artwork fuse with the more sinister atmosphere contributed by Lord Worm's lyrics and album concept... the results could be very interesting.

I STILL SAY ANGEL SKIN GARDEN WOULD RULE..... A VAST GRAVEYARD OF GHOULS PULLING PPL FROM THEIR GRAVES PEELING THE SKINS AND PLACING THEM OVER THE TOMBSTONES.....

In the upcoming issue of metal maniacs (which I have early because of my subscription) there is an interview with Worm as well as a small shot of the cover the art. It's pretty damn eerie...I wont describe it for those who may not want the suprise ruined. All I'll say is that it is an original drawing, not a historical painting or photograph. Oh, and its probably the "goriest" cover they've ever had...but those familiar with the past covers know that doesnt exactly neccessitate buckets of blood.

Well I'll wait until I see what it looks like, but I'm sure it has something to do with the theme of the album, hopefuly.

Man, the news just keeps getting better and better. Thanks for the update. I'm euphoric that the artwork ties with the album theme and is infused with a palpable malevolence. :lo: I.. cannot.. wait..

... I like it. Understated yet pulsing with an atmosphere of desolation and foreboding.
I understand if this cover is not everyone's cup of tea, flagon of ale or skull of blood. The classic paintings used for NSV and Morbid Angel's "Blessed Are The Sick" are legendary, and two of my absolute favourites. I also really like the covers for "Domination." Yes, that's right. Lots of fans thought it was crap, but I thought the presentation of that alien Lovecraft Hellscape was excellent and really suited the fucking brutal and otherworldly quality of the music. Ace IMO
With that in mind, what I've seen of the "Once Was Not" artwork gets my vote! While different from NSV, I dig the cover art for WS and ATYB.

It will grow on most people.
I'm holding judgement untill I either see a high quality and large pic, or have it in my hands.

It's funny to see some people get in such a tizz over the artwork. If it's an awesome cover then that's a bit of a bonus, but if not.... who cares? I thought these people were paying money for a CD, not a small picture.

i'd buy the cd if it had no cover... i just wanted a cryptopsy album that matches the lyrics... not enough gore...
