There is so much that can be done to metal that its almost insane to have a category like this... Basically, i love odd time signatures, poly rhythms, and changes that jump out of odd places. SURPRISES, hahaha... writing metal is almost too much, its like, what are you gonna do to make the best song ever... you could make some extremely long odd time signature, throw a ton of different techniques in it to waste time, and then make change ups in odd places at different times so its always changing, but is this just wasting time? Personally, I dont think so, but many do... Im also all about harmonizing. I think if vital remains met necrophagist, decrepit birth, and disgorge, it would be unstopable... but i think for right now, the best things you can do to add to this unstopable chaotic manifestation is have polyrhythms with constant tempo changes and really elongated odd time signature that involve both the prior along with as much technique as you can pack into the oddity... also, it must always be changing to make it even more odd... hahahahahahah. But what the fuck does all this shit mean? I dunno, but its already happening and progressing through a lot of different styles... I luve metal. WHat up Matt, thanks for putting up the forum. Nothing but representation from you hommie, your the shit. Anyways, im drunk as fuck and 'bout to pass. PEACE OUT... KEEP THE CHAOS FRESH... hahaha

in this post I meant Vital Remains: Dechristianize, nothing else... I just saw them last night in SF and they played only songs from this CD and the whole shit except for the last song (which is one of my favorites), but its ok b/c they played a Deicide cover: Lunatic of God's Creation. Please go see Vital Remains and watch the insanity of Dave Suzuki, that guys a fucking machine...hahahah

YES. I love surprises in songs, damnit. And extreme tempo changes, definately my cup of tea.

For me personally... all the odd time sigs, and tempo changes have to be put aside! getting too hung up on that can kill your songs. - You gotta think of the song first. - What kinda of a song are you writing? is there a phrase or riff that is the key to the song, kinda births it? - You have to shape the identity of the song in your head before and while you're writing it.
I think in melody and mood first. The consciousness of odd time sigs and tempo changes come in the latter half as you're adding spice and ironing out. Sometimes odd time stuff is in mind early on... but it should always SERVICE THE SONG. the song should never be a slave to technique.
That's just me though, and I'm nobody.

What you said is all good points. But people are all different, and people write songs in their own little crazy styles and ways, no matter if it's technical or not. I don't think by having surprises in songs will make the song a slave to the writing. There are good and bad things to being complex and sporadic, and there are good and bad things with being repetitive, and boring. To each his own. :)

Oh, absolutely...
But I mean, take any song of Cynic's 'Focus.' - Technical as all hell right? - But still, I'm sure they adhered to making the song work despite it's technical aspects, you know?
Take Decrepit Birth here... It's all over the place! - But accidental or not there's a method to the madness, all the songs are solid arrangements. - As crazy as it is, no technique feels forced... the technique is all in service to the aesthetic. - Fucking brilliant.
