Someone else started a How old are we and where are we from thread. I notice that most (though not all) are 15-23 yrs of age and then a few 28-32.
I'm surprised there aren't more 25-35 range. I myself started off with Metallica as my first true metal band 9 yrs ago at 21. And its been downhill into hell ever since.
2 questions:
1. How long do you think you will listen to Black Metal
2. What was your first Metal Band?

hi man it's good to hear from you! the first albums i heard that had anything to do with black metal was when i bought the haunting the chapel tape in the 80's and it was a totally different feeling than metallica, megadeth, exodus, testament, etc. etc. had and that was where it all started for me i guess. A little bit later me and a friend were at a good record store and I was searching for something even faster darker and more insane than that! now slayer especially early slayer is hard to top in extremity and vibe but we picked up Sodom- expure of sodomy tape(KILLER EP!) another real classic and it was soo sick sounding and darker shit man, that was the dawn of death metal and the resurgence of black metal in the early 90's I listened to mostly stuff like morbid angel, deicide, death,Entombed, obituary, hypocrisy,et c.until I picked up Darkthrone's highly creative black metal masterpiece A blaze in the northern sky and it grew on me until I was a black metal fanatic and only listened to black metal till about 97 where i started listening to my entire catalog again featuring all the best thrash, death, black metal and black metal is a huge part of that and it's going to be with me forever I will never stop listening to it because it's the only thing that sounds closest to how i feel and death! so man, I may have been born too late because these times of the earth are pretty shitty but at least I was here to enjoy and observe the best most from the heart music being made! so hails!
I surely hope this doesn't result in a double Post. :)
I'm far older than anyone else on this Board and have been listening to 'Metal' since the term was coined.
As to how long I'll listen to Black Metal, I'd say as long as there's creative new releases and new bands.
It's true that I rarely revist my late 80s metal albums and Pantera, Priest, Anthrax, whom I really liked, seem very dated now.
On the other hand, the old Led Zep, Mountain stuff ( the first music I ever heard described as Heavy Metal) is still pretty interesting.
The Thrash and Glam mid 80s shit was never really to my taste.
I think that BM will stay viable longer due to the fact that it's so fucking out-of-left-field .

I would not really class them as metal but my first band was KISS I mean you can't deny their influence on so many metal bands today: Immortal, Bathory, Metallica, Pantera.... I've always liked larger than life bands with mystique I think it's really cool I see a band like Immortal as more of picking up were Wasp Manowar and KISS left off... but I see Mayhem and Darkthrone as having the same mystque but being more dark

Well, I'm 23, and I think I'll be listening to black metal for a while yet. If we knew when we'd stop listening to it, I guess we might as well stop now.
I first got into 'metal' when I was about 13 or 14 I guess, after hard rock (GnR, Motley, Kiss). So it was Metallica and Megadeth, plus the usual mid 90's 'metal' bands like Korn (shut up, I know!), Iron Maiden, Fear Factory, Pantera etc...

Well, my friend got me into Metallica in the summer of 1999, a few months after my 16th Birthday. I found myself going through the Nu Metal phase pretty quickly after that.
I got into Cradle of Filth in winter 2000 just after "Midian" was released, and I just began to find Nu Metal really limiting and very boring.
I had a look around on Amazon.co.uk for some new bands to get into, and I stumbled over Emperor. Hehe, one glorious day in 2001 I bought "Anthems to the Welkin at Dusk", and wasn't quite prepared for the barking insanity that was about to be thrown at me from my speakers. That first night, I couldn't get to sleep, it was like I'd opened Pandora's box and the world of Extreme Metal had just tipped itself into my bedroom. So, I guess I've been into Black Metal for about 3 years. Mayhem were the 2nd BM band I got into...I bought "De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas" nearing the end of the summer holidays later that year.
As for how long I'll listen to Black Metal for...I really don't know...not a clue. It's a question that can't really be answered.

I was first introduced to heavy music through Guns n Roses and Rage Against the Machine in the early nineties before I moved on to Metallica and Iron Maiden, then Megadeth, then Slayer, then Dimmu Borgir and finally Black Metal.
I'll listen to Black Metal until I grow tired of it, which may or may not happen.

I jumped right on to black metal no metallica, or Iron maiden... oh, maybe not black metal. Kovenant(animatronic lol) and Dimmu Borgir(Stormblåst)... But it did not take long before I found something a lot better: De mysteriis dom sathanas by MAYHEM. And some Burzum and Darkthrone.
I listen to old releases mostly, but there is still good albums coming out. When I find something I really like, I can listen to it a lot. I can surwive with a single good album for a year...
I will probely keep listening to Black metal for a long time.
my first contact with metal music was absolutly by accident when one of my friend invited me into a rock pub, when first i heard Tiamat(clouds period) then i was 13 years old.
since then metalm. becomes my lifestile.
about my first blackm.band:rolleyes: maby hecate enthroned but i'm not quite sure. And i'll listen blackm.till it will have so much in comun with my philosophy, feelings and beliefs

I'm 16 (near to 17) now and started to listen Metal in the age of 10 or 11. But first I listened to NuMetal stuff like Korn or Slipknot. Then I started to listen to Metallica, Slayer, Maiden and VENOM. After that i found Immortal's "At the Heart of Winter" in our local music store in 2002, I think. Since that moment i knew that I just want to listen to Black Metal till I die.

Thought I would jump in. I am 26 years old and my first "metal band" (dont fucking argue ok) were Motley Crue with Shout At The Devil when I was like 10 years old. I discovered Danzig & Black Sabbath next and it has been an ever growing and descending spiral into all things metal (save for slipknot, korn and their ilk and hair metal ala Winger etc. Other than that, almost any metal will do for one of my moods.) I will listen to metal until the day I die. I will always listen to black metal as well. I will never grow tired of great black metal. It's in the blood, runs too deep to ever give up. I may stop listening to new black metal one day if there are no good bands playing black metal anymore but I am sure it will perservere in some form as all music does.

Well, I'm 23 right now, just about to turn 24. I can't really remember the first metal band I listened to, something like Priest or Metallica. The first extreme metal I listened to was Cannibal Corpse: shit, was that an eye opener! First Black metal I heard was Emperor (Wrath of the Tyrants) and then Sameal (can't remember which one). So, I guess that it's been about a decade of rage and hate with no sign of stopping. I guess that I'll listen until... well... it storms for three seasons!

i`m 19, and my first metal album was a Manson live album, when i was 15.then i was listening to many kinds of metal(now considered pieces of shit). What has taken me into the extreme side of metal was Swansong from Carcass(also when i was 15). i really liked Jeff`s vocals and the majestic guitars. then there was no stop, right now i feel that i`ve found what i was looking for. Anthems To The Welkin At Dusk from Emperor and Mayhem`s Wolf`s Lair Abyss (and so many other great releases ) opened new dimensions before me.
i can`t tell you for sure how long i will be a BM fanatic, but i hope that BM will be going even when i`m being buried six feet under.
all respect for Quorthon
you shall be remembered forever
