View Full Version : Adrift needs a cover song. Please help!

Kevin says we need a cover song, and it would be fun, but we can't decide on one. We have thrown around "The stroke" by Billy Squier, and "Simple man" by Skynyrd. Somebody already did Simple man, so now we need some help. What is we took "My Sharona" and heavied it up a bit?

How about some Cactus or Blue Cheer??

AstlAdrift

"My Sharona?" Ummm, sorry, no way. It would sound like we were trying to pay tribute to the "Monk" show. Yecch. How about one of the more obscure Devo songs (Demolition Hammer's cover of "Mongoloid" was choice and fucking brutal)? Or maybe "Rock On" by David Essex? "The Stroke" would be cool (especially b/c it's a subversive, thinly veiled anthem to masturbation), or perhaps something really surprising, like a heavy cover of a Whitney Houston or a Backstreet Boys song (just to fuck up pop-loving labels, not b/c I like them). Shit, even a heavified Elvis or even an original HANK song...

If we get enough consistent suggestions, we'll put up a poll and let the fans decide.

Do something by Zeppelin. I don't see too many bands out there covering them for some reason.

siN

I concur with the notion for Zeppelin, Zakk Wylde did some ripping covers over 'em (note: Going to California with a twinge of rawwwk and heavy to it)

How about some AC/DC possibly? They're always a wise choice *OR* you could really be uber savage, and go for the ultimate song..

Phil Collins - In the Air Tonight

Yup, that has a nifty background story to it, and it's a winning tune. Kevin, I'm sure you would have a blast playing drums for that, and as for guitars and vocals - I know Analia and Jack can make a raunchy sound out of that one.

My vote goes for Mr. Collins ! Do it !

..or I know there has to be someone in the band yearning to do a Boy George cover - DONT LIE!

There is only one song worthy of being covered; "Strokin" by Clarence Carter. Listen to it once and you'll know why... I've always wanted to do a goregrind cover of that song...

10.) Rush - A Passage To Bangkok
9.) The Smiths - How Soon Is Now?
8.) The Jimi Hendrix Experience - Manic Depression
7.) Rush - Red Barchetta
6.) The Beatles - She's So Heavy
5.) Gerry Rafferty - Baker Street
4.) Duran Duran - Rio
3.) The Beatles - Eleanor Rigby
2.) Prince - Purple Rain
1.) Blue Öyster Cult - Don't Fear The Reaper

I believe the Foo Fighters covered Baker Street a few years back, so that one is out of the question. It's not the same without the saxophone and the fretless bass anyway.

Godhead did a pretty cool industrial cover of Eleanor Rigby not too long ago, so we can scratch that one, too.

I always wanted to cover Kashmir, but Puff Daddy or P. Diddy or whatever the fuck his name is this week fucked that up for everybody. I think if some kid ten years from now walked up and accused us of borrowing that guitar riff from a P. Diddy song, I would consider going on a heroin binge. Not because I have any problem with the evolution of music or the marriage of two genres or anything, just because the kid will never have heard of Jimmy Page. MTV is about as good for our culture as a cheese grater is for masturbating.

In response to Juggla:

Did you mean Don't Fear The Reaper or a Creedence tune? You have the benefit of the doubt. Creedence has some good tunes.

Stream of consciousness: I am rethinking my Top 10 because I forgot to include The Byrds - Turn! Turn! Turn! and The Mamas & The Papas California Dreamin'. We could do kickass versions of both of those tunes. But I still think the BÖC tune would rock the most.

Puff Daddy doesnt count because it's not real music IMO, haha. Are there any more Led Zep songs that you would consider covering?

AstlAdrift
05-14-2004, 02:24 PM
"The Immigrant Song". Dark Angel did it years ago, and it was cool, and hella fast, but that's always been about the only Zep song I can stomach.

A righteous "Hell Yeah" to Band B*tch for the Sabbath "Paranoid" suggestion. Awesome, seminal song, simplicity in its purest form, and fun, too. Gets my vote right now.

Van Halen....hmmmmm...perhaps "Ain't Talkin' 'Bout Love" or something more obscure and metal, like "Tora Tora Tora"? Other suggestions? Geez, I don't know if I could play those technical drum patterns from Alex. ;) And, I *KNOW* for a fact that our bass player Michael could not handle Michael Anthony's ridiculously intricate bass lines -- that dude shreds Vic Wooten! :D

AIC is one of my faves of all time, "Dirt" is a top ten record for me. So many good songs..."Godsmack" (unfortunately purloined by the later band) "Rain When I Die," wow, it's be hard to pick from that record.

I'd love to do a Devo song, Like "Freedom of Choice," but I think I'm in the minority (defined: a singularity) in my band.

All good suggestions. This rules. I never knew what message boards were about, but now I'm addicted. And no, Michael, I'm not addicted to dick, before you make the obscure Sam Kinnison pop culture reference.

You'll STILL be in rehab before me!

HA!

Led Zeppelin

Zeppelin has an entire career full of great tunes but I feel there are so many more obscure artists, such as Devo (Kevin) that would make for more interesting covers. I am really fond of Carouselambra off their last album. The Immigrant Song would be alot of fun. Come to think of it, lots of stuff off of either "Physical Graffiti" or "Houses of the Holy" rocks. Didn't Great White do an entire album of Zep covers?

Alice in Chains

I acquiesce with Kevin on the "Dirt" album. That is easily one of the greatest albums of the grunge era. I like it from start to finish and still keep it on regular rotation. I like Rotten Apple from "Jar of Flies" quite a bit and a few tracks from "Grind". They were a great band. I would rate Jerry Cantrell as one of the three best guitarist/songwriters of the 1990's. It's a shame about Layne.

Van Halen

Hmmmmnh... I will probably be ostracized for saying this, especially by our drummer who has nothing better to do than dream up sexually deviant scandals to put me in the middle of (well, that's when he's not padding his stats on the sex-o-meter), but I personally feel Edward & Alex Van Halen's finest moments are found on Van Halen III and the "Twister" soundtrack. Yeah, yeah, yeah... I'm sure that comment will be regarded as blasphemous. Listen, Runnin' with the Devil, Eruption and Jaime's Cryin' were great songs to party to as a teenager, but I don't find them to be life changing. I thought Me Wise Magic was decent... Anyway, if we want to pay homage to great guitar players and give Jack a chance to shred, how about Stevie Ray Vaughn, Jimi Hendrix or Randy Rhoads. I fully endorse a cover of Diary of a Madman!

Paranoid, we all know what happened when 3rd Strike did a cover of that song - I think the word "y'all" was used, and extra "Z's" were put in places where they normally don't belong.

I believe there was also a period of ad lib rapping that I *know* wasn't in the original version

I'll vote for AiC - On top of Godsmack butchering their sound and music, Adema has covered Nutshell in a tribute to Layne. Man in the Box maybe?

If we're talking covers, I know Children of Bodom have some absolutely RIPPING Maiden covers! They have a spank-tastic Scorpions cover of "Dont Stop At the Top" too - You guys thought about maybe some butt-rock? Motley Crue?

Here's a small list of heavier tunes that could work..

Motley Crue - Anything really, Live Wire's a good tune
Sepultura - Territory
Motorhead - Born To Raise Hell, Ace of Spades

2 classics not often praised:

Ozzy - I Just Want You
Ozzy - Back on Earth

Check out Tubring and their MP3 'The Medley (Part 2)' that's on their site, possibly draw inspiration from that? [hilarious stuff too]

You *have* to do Priest.

Maybe if you do it live, you can also all come out dressed in leather? I know Shaun of SOiL has an uncanny fixation on the spandex outfits worn by The Darkness, both bands could really put on quite the visual show if/when you both tour..

I think we should pay homage to some grass-roots, downhome, straight-ahead rock n' roll. CCR is pretty edgy guitar rock. Fuck it. Maybe three albums in, we can do an entire cover album a la "Spaghetti Incident" except with a little more care.
It's not a cheesy ploy to make cash when you take ten songs you love and just rock them out. Speaking of Cash, we should put some "Folsom Prison Blues" on that mutha. And some "Morrison Hotel" while were at it.

But ya know....no one has had the balls to touch "in the air." I'm still all bout the Phil Collins. The guys got how many hits? How many albums go Platinum? We need to quit fuckin' off. If we had that "Good ol' Boys" cover rehearsed, we might be able to get it on the soundtrack for the new Dukes of Hazzard movie.

I think AIC is a good idea, especially considering Layne's passing. "Down in a Hole" is a great tune. The entire Dirt album is great. It is only 12 years old, though.

I'm gonna say it again: BÖC's "Don't Fear The Reaper".

We don't know what kind of music we are, either. We are currently in pre-production of our up-and-coming album and hopefully you will forget about genres and listen to it with an open mind, if for no other reason, than just to hear Jack shine on guitar.

MichælAdrift
06-20-2004, 12:14 PM
We actually worked on "Down In A Hole" the other day and opted not to do it after all. There are a lot of textures and great vocal harmonies in that song; however, it is so distinct, there is not much we can offer to it. It would pretty much sound identical to the original with the exception of maybe the tonalities of our voices.

The idea of a cover song is off until we finish the album. That is not to say people should still post their opinions because we might do one someday. We wanted to do "Simple Man" from Skynyrd but Shinedown beat us to the punch.

siN
06-20-2004, 08:29 PM
Well personally, coming from my mouth, I think cover songs are actually some of the coolest things a band can add to their repertoire.

I mean, those damn Japanese get 'em all the time in their "special releases" - I think global audiences could do with a treat! It really shows the broad capabilities of a band as well when they can bust out those "old favourites".

AstlAdrift
06-21-2004, 07:33 PM
Not to detract from what Michael posted, Adrift IS actually still looking to do a cover for our record. It is just that our focus right now is on pre-production of the full-length, and that we have not been putting the time into determination of the proper cover song. To echo what Michael said, however, we want the "right" cover, one we can do justice to, and one which fans will love, without being too kitschy, campy, or obscure. AIC was a real front-runner, but after messing with it, the song does not need to be covered, and Michael is dead right: what could we do to "Down in a Hole" that would make it more emotional? More bare? More honest, sincere, moody? Short answer, nothing. Long answer, nooooooooooothing.

Jack and I have been toying with "Everybody Wants You" by Billy Squier, which would be a fun song to play (although I still have to lean towards "The Stroke" as my fave BS tune).

Keep suggesting, you crazy cats (and kittens)!!

What Kevin said. I just don't want to push it.

sIN: You do not fringe on the homosexual when suggesting rap. I have possessed a fairly extensive collection of hip-hop from Grandmaster Flash to Whodini down to modern day dogs like Snoop n' M, fo' reaaal, biz-sizzle-snatch. Yo, yo, yo, Mary J's gotta cool groove and Missy E's pretty phat, too. The greatest strength of English, for you Ebonics haters, and the reason it is spoken in every country around the world that is not indigenous, is its "shapely ambiguity" or its ability to absorb and assimilate every culture...

Kevin is very fond of the song "The Stroke" because it is metaphorically stabbing at masturbation. It was also the first song I played on stage, albeit I was lipsynching with a guitar because it was third grade. I am doin' my best to make a metaphysical connection here...

We should have jumped on "Simple Man" when it was fresh before Shinedown did it. But maybe we thought of it at the same time...maybe there is a universal consciousness...?

This is where the wine has taken me...

A rap tune would be cool.

Vehemence, the video for "Empty Dreams," shot and directed by Gary Schutt of Jeff Scott Soto (Yngwie's good old stuff) fame is available for download at the Adrift website, at www.adrift.cc/videos.shtml.

There are two sizes, a small one in WM format, with hugely reduced framerate and sound quality (not recommended unless you are on dial-up), and a QT 44 Meg file, which looks and sounds good. When you click on them, the download begins, but nothing appears to happen until the download is complete, so DO NOT click on it again or it will begin the download over again.

Well, I know I was the one who posted a negative post about Adrift but believe it or not, I have several ideas for a cover song on the album. They are:

Crosby Stills Nash: Southern Cross
The Beatles: Let It Be
John Fogerty: Old Man Down The Road
The Moody Blues: Nights In White Satin
The Who: Squeeze Box
John Lennon: Mind Games
George Harrison: Got My Mind Set On You
Neil Young: Keep On Rockin In The Free World
Ringo Starr: It Don't Come Easy
Rainbow: Stone Cold
Crosby, Stills, Nash, & Young: Our House
Lou Reed: Walk On The Wild Side

In my opinion, those would make great cover songs. I would strongly reccommend Southern Cross cause I think that would be a great song to cover. By the way, I'm going to start giving Adrift another chance. Who knows? I just might like em.

Yo rock n roll/metal co-hearts. Blarg Blarg Tea Boy here. Talk of all this cover music brings to surface many a tune that would be worthy of covering. Kinda tuff cause I by passed alot of the old school rock stuff myself and went from Oingo Boingo to Megadeth and Metallica. (I'm kidding about Oingo Boingo but I did listen to some crazy 80's pop stuff I refuse to repeat here) Probably one of my earliest albums was AC/DC flick of the switch. Bedlam in Belgum was pretty heavy for me then. Then it was was on to Maiden then very quickly I was listening to Megadeth, Killing is my business, before heading off to church on Sunday mornings. (They did a sick cover of Nancy Sinatra's "These Boots." So obscure to me is good as long as it's done well. I personaly would steer away from the normal covers, I.E. ANYTHING by Zepplin or Kiss. Nothing against those two powerhouses but it's just been played out. I'd rather turn the masses onto something new.

Just a few thoughts here.

A. Kings X- Lot's of heavy songs along with great harmonies & tons of Hooks! That guy has an amazing voice. I'd choose something from back in the early 90's they did. Kevin I know you used to dig them so you gotta have some of that old stuff. Obscure band somewhat but lots of great Heavy rock tunes to bring to the table that the mass market would appreciate.

B. Personally I think it's a little early to bust out the Alice In Chains covers. I hasn't been THAT long since we lost Lane. However anything on Dirt would be worthy of covering and if someone could pull it off with class I believe you guys (and girl) could. Them Bones is one of my fav's personally.

C. I'm fishing for "rockish" stuff here but If it was me? I'd be doing a SEAL cover. Crazy is one of my favorite songs from the 1st album. Hey everyone knows who he is and alot of the stuff from his 1st album is guitar/band oriented stuff. Crazy is a monster feel good/BIG sounding Song. It got lot's of airplay when it 1st came out. I think Marq could kill it on the vocals too. Hey, go for Broke. If you were thinkinga bout Phil Collins then this could do just as well if not beter. (although i was ALL about doing "in the air." If you think it's gay. Fuck you.

D. Now this ones gonna get me shit but Garth Brooks "thunder rolls." Rock that song out, make it a bit heavier. Great song. Moody. Again Marq's vocals could put that song over the top. (i know you guys are gonna give me shit about that one.) I beleive covering that song set's you apart from the typical rock bands.

Aside from the Alice in Chains songs the others are not typical cover songs. They could put you over the top or have you looking like the kid in the corner of the play ground no one wants to play with. But hey. That's what stepping out and being unique is about.

I have spoken

In case all you bee-itches don't know, I'll tell ya:

Tony Teegarden (see post above) used to be in Epitaph (Tampa, FL based tech-death-core that Borivoj Krgin from Metal Maniacs once described as "the best unsigned death metal act in Florida") with me, I also played drums in Epitaph.

He also is the guy who did ALL of the death metal vocals on the now classic Cynic "Focus" album, back in the day on Roadrunner Records.

Okay, T, to address your points:

A. Gay, and too obscure, they really never had a hit worthy of redoing, even though there are several albums of theirs I love. Did I mention that you are GAY?

B. The validity of doing or not doing an AIC cover is not, in my opinion, to be judged by how long it has been since a member has died. It is simply that AIC is classic, even though only out for roughly 15 years. We decided against it b/c we could not see adding any dimension to the song that would warrant doing it; i.e.; how can you improve on "Dirt"? Short answer, you can't. Long answer, yooooooooouuuuuuuu caaaaannnnnnnnoootttt.

C. Seal, hmmmm, I never really got into him, but I know he's a really popular artist, and that song was huge.

D. Dude, you are the gayest of the gay, and then even gayer than that, with an extra scoop of gay on top (oh, that's right, you're a "bottom", I forgot! :D). Garth MuthaFukkin Brooks? Could be cool and unexpected. But gay, oh, so gay.

I am still holding out for an older Devo song, perhaps "Uncontrollable Urge" or "Freedom of Choice."

Oh If you've ever heard the song, which I'm assuming you haven't , it does rock. Garth Brooks is a Multi Multi Multi Platinum recording artist by the way so I'm sure a few people have heard it. People would be blown away by your rendition. I wouldn't have suggested it If I didn't think you guys could pull it off with finese and in your own way. Rock, Metal and New Country would dig it. Hell if Kid Rock can pull it off. I am hurt, broke down and about to cry in my extra scoop of gayness now. Blar Blarg Bottom Boy out.

P.S. If it was up to me I'd cover something off of Testaments the Legacy. I.E. "Over the Wall." Fuck everybody.

P.P.S. Obscure? Talk about those two Devo songs. Only song any one knows of is "whip it." Which is what I'd rather do than listen to a Devo cover. haha.

P.P.P.S. Ok Kevin I'm ready for the Verbal Assault you're about to lay down, But you're still my obeise late night raviolli eaten Bon bon munchen microphone marinator that I know and Love.

Okay, for you readers out there, this has assumed epic wacky and distasteful proportions, so please read no further if imagery of rimming, sodomy, and other graphic endeavors offend you!

Teegarden, Taster of Paul,

Bro, you've not NEAR had the last word ("I ain't through with you by a damn sight"), and I would say that you should not shoot a fucking tank in a glass mansion, turdlet, so here goes....

It's humorous to me that most of what you throw at me is about me fucking various chicks, which is obviously good for me, rather than you, who was anally penetrated by your butch ex-girlfriend. How else can you explain the stained and smelly STRAP-ON she kept? You have a dick (albeit a shrivelled, comically tiny choad), so a strap-on is superfluous, especially in light of the fact that this particular strap-on did NOT have a hole in the back for insertion of your member, which means you could NOT have put it on. So you took it in the shitter, I understand...it was in your "experimental" days...I'm not judging, dude, really I'm not...

Do I need to bring up the pudding, and the spoon, and the gay porn? You'd better hope not.

So I made a chick walk home after sleeping with her. She was an insensitive, mean-spirited, and harassing little bimbo who deserved to be put in her place. And I *DID* get little hotties (all of legal age, mind you) to blow me when I was a manager for McD's, don't tell me you would not have. Come on, hot chicks in polyester uniforms, with NAMETAGS, horking on the old Grimace, and enjoying the special sauce? It's a veritable dream of adolescent flesh!!

Can't we just get along? Your posts here have been so helpful and fun. Ha, you know I'm just breaking balls, beeyotch.

Anyone reading this must think that we are like a stupid married couple. But, oddly, only one of us, YOU, has eaten of the man-flesh that shall not be named, and accepted Peter into Paul, if you catch my drift...or my A-drift!

HAHAHAHAHA!

In other news, I will check out the GB song! See ya!

I'm lauphing so hard i'm freak'n cryen..!!...It's all good.

P.S. What scares me about the stain btw was that it was GREEN dude. And you know it's true. Florescent GREEN. hahaha. I question if she was human or not...lol.

Hi, have you guys thought about some Aerosmith? "Sweet Emotion" could be a good option, as well as "Rats in the cellar".

Beleth, an interesting proposition. Steven Wilson's productions are definitely the shit, but it would have to be one of the shorter, moodier songs. I'd get voted down on any of the more metal stuff, even though they crush!

I'm gonna re-work the classic song "The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald" by Gordon Lightfoot. It could have some heavy moody shit in it somewhere...Will anybody know it???

[Revolver Sept. 2004]

SHIT!! That song (even though we have not been working with it) had my vote for highest "cool" factor.

Oh, well, keep the suggestions coming!! The record is only four weeks away!!

Wait, 1st off - you actually read? - What nonsense. 2nd - Nonpoint...I'll keep tight lipped about them - They're a fellow FL band aren't they? 3rd - Your posts are definitely not for the epileptic nor the colorblind. I'm beginning to wonder about you Kevin...all this talk about 'gay' this and 'gay' that, yet here you are typing in PINK and LIME GREEN.

With all said and done, and with Nonpoint running away with my idea that was without a doubt the hottest thing since denim, I'm going to have to forge forth with a chant for JUDAS PRIEST

Just take a really shitty pop song and revamp it.

Just think of something fun to do. And remember, it's always best when you do something no one will expect. Because then, you were either smoking some weird shit, or it's a higher level of musical art than most of the populus can understand. :p
