"The mics were in close proximity (Not knowing about the 3 to 1 rule of mic placement then.) Which caused some phasing problems."
Rather than use the 3 to 1 rule, why not just reverse the phase of one of the microphones??
Most tube pre's have this function, alot of audio proggys come stock with reversal plugins, or even switching the hot and cold pins around at one end of a mic lead would give you the desired effect.
The 3 to 1 rule can work if you have the time, but the main problem i have found with it is that you lose to much bottom end.
For bottom end to be captured with run of the mill gear, in a room thats not purpose built, i would have thought phase reversal and close proximity mics would have been the go.
\m/Just curious thats all\m/
