View Full Version : What did you listen to growing up?

I was raised on what I knew what was called "fusion ".
I thought everyone listened to it, because it was just what was readily available at home. And then I found out that there are people that don't listen to ANY music whatsoever. Not a fucking thing!
I found that to be almost, well actually, pretty unsettling.
:
Rush, Frank Zappa, Aerosmith, Steve Vai, Alice Cooper, King Crimson, Yes, Asia, Pink Floyd, The Beatles, Al Di Meola, Genesis, Joe Satriani, David Bowie, Jimi Hendrix, Van Halen, Heart, Missing Persons, Eurythmics, Living Colour, Def Leppard, Peter Gabriel, Steve Morse, The Dixie Dregs, Todd Rundgren, Utopia, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Chick Corea, Thomas Dolby, Dream Theater, The Who, The Scorpions, Stu Hamm, Steve Hackett, Tommy Bolin, Jethro Tull, Eric Johnson, Steve Howe.
Well, not all of it is "fusion".
But this is what I grew up around. I don't like them all, but in that certain way I respect them all.
Anyone?

From the age of ten, I started listening to Berzerker, In Flames and that kinda stuff. And here I am. Two years... two fuckken years of metal.
From 6-9 I listened to rap and other that kinda stuff (oh yes thank you my brother). It was horrible, volume max, 2-Pac yelling "nigga shooting tha nine mm" for atleast 30min for his "preparation to getting out to party". And when he got home, he waked me by playing Snoop, Notorious B.I.G etc. 2m away from my bed.
And Im not a rap-racist or nothing. That's just how it is.

I'm only 15, so I'm still growing up technically, lol
I wasn't big on music as a kid, but what I did listen to was rap, being as how I lived in a black neighborhood, that was the top kind of music there.
But now, I listen to bands like Slipknot, MuDvAyNe, Stone Sour, Twisted Method, The Berzerker, DevilDriver, Mushroomhead, Pantera, DamagePlan, some Metallica and KoRn, and this local band called Shrowd kicks ass too.

Killer VR sig, HumanWaste.
Started off when I was a kid making tapes of music from games off my friend's commodore64 - stuff like parralax, monty mole, last ninja, etc. Got a load of shit from people for listening to "computer music"!! Funny one to look back on.
Hit a big gangsta-rap phase at 15...mostly NWA.
Got into Aerosmith's 'P.U.M.P' soon after. Then Slayer's ''Reign in Blood'. Then Kreator's "Coma of Souls". Then Metallica. Then I heard Morbid Angel's "Blessed Are The Sick" and that's when it all started.

Yeah, I got into metal about last summer, maybe early fall. I started with Disturb's "The Sickness" and then Drowning Pool's "Sinner".
Then I watched the Slipknot "My Plague" video on my Resident Evil DVD, and lsitened to some stuff my friend has on her comp such as Wait and Bleed. I then went off to buy Iowa and loved the album, and I still do. Then I just started to explore more with metal to see what other bands there are, and her I am, lol.

*sigh* Well...time to show my age!
It started with Black Sabbath, Deep Purple, Led Zeppelin, etc.
I was around 3 to 5 years old when this was the "extreme" stuff. I also listenend to the Beatles, Stones, the Who (RIP Ox). Also got into the commercial crap of the 70's.
Then in '77 or '78, my brother bought an album from some group called the Ramones. He hated it, I could not stop listening to it! This was incredibly fast, intense, hardcore stuff for a 7 year old!
So, the '80s brought all the punk, the early HC bands, the NWOBHM invasion, electronic overload and new wave. I can't even begin to list all the bands!
If I can claim any one band that got me into what was, is, and will be metal...I would say the Ramones. Sure, it wasn't lyrically complex or musically challenging, but it was just intense, fast, and a d@mn good time.
/steps off the soap-crate
PS: I'm going to be 35 this year. Considering the majority of people I run into on the 'net are under 25, I feel like the old man mos times!

Wow, I forgot Danny Elfman, he's the shit. The Sleepy Hollow soundtrack is really good, but my first one was Batman, I was 8 years old. I wish I still had the Danny Elfman volume 1, the Face like a frog song, I used to love, I haven't heard that song in years, (wacky).
Good shit.
My first cd was in 1987 I think, and it was Def Leppard's Hysteria. When cd's used to come in big paper/cardboard boxes.
I was in a Queen phase for almost 3 years in middle school. Thank you Wayne's World.
I heard a lot of Industrial stuff I suppose, in High School. The usual. Nine inch nails, Front line assembly, Laibach, Front 242. Then other stuff, Marilyn Manson, Prick, PIL, shit I can't even remember now. It all got really boring though, I was disappointed that I wanted a specific sound, that I could never find.
I liked some metal, but I dreadfully hated excessively long guitar solos, and Ronnie James Dio vocals. I suppose I just couldn't handle it. And death metal sounded like a bunch of noise to me, I didn't like it either. I didn't yet have the ear for it.
I think the first really cool thing I ever heard was Ministry's Psalm 69, it was that sound that I was looking for, almost.
I can go on, but another day...
Seeing Rush this summer though, i've never seen them before! It will be awesome. And this time i'm not getting trashed, like at King Crimson, and becoming a fool. Sometimes, it's not the greatest thing to know the bartender...:p

Well i started on stuff like Johnny C. Clark, George thorough-good, ELO, just the general stuff my parents listened to. Then i went on to a stage where i listened to nothing that went on for about 1-2 years until i was about 7-8. then i got in to iron maiden, old chillis, poisen, alice cooper (i know those two were out before i was born but my broter was listening ot them at the time so i stole his CD's!), early offspring, mac lads, madness, prodigy, skunka nansie, lots of oters. Then as i assume for many others here the shite hit the fan and the rap phase came in to play. I was listening to eminem, D12, Dr dre, cypress hill, all sorts. Well then i got to the age of 12/13 and i met a nice man called Dafunkmeister (as you may know him on this site). He got me in to deftones, slipknot, korn, inflames, deicide, the list goes on. Then finally i found all the rest of the extreme metal world (other than deicide that is) and now here i am at the grand old age of 16 going on 17 (pretty soon!). And that was my life story, hope you enjoyed it, yeah right...............:D

It was January 1997, I had this friend at High School and he made me a mix tape of some metal stuff.
His name was David.
Thank you David.
A little Cannibal Corpse (tomb of the mutilated), Deicide (once upon a cross), Traces of Death 4 soundtrack. There was a song on there called "Hatework" by Morbid Angel off of Domination, and that is the song that started it all for me. And also "Brainpan Blues" by Pungent Stench. :p

I grew up with my father's obsession with Bob Dylan and Led Zep, and some 70s hard rock from my mother.
I still remember stealing LPs from my parents' collection when I was 7 or 8 years old - in fact, I think the first album I ever bought was ACDC's "The Razor's Edge". From there it went onto Slayer, Metallica and a few other bands like that, and I've progressed from there.

My chilhood is something im not prowd of. I had some backstreet boys and stuff around the age of 7. human nature aswell. i then got into regurgitator, mighty might boss tones(i think thats it) and similar bands. i progressed to blink 182 and after about 6 months found myself thinking i was fucking mad listening to rap.
I finally went to limp bizcuit and worked up to slipknot around the time iowa was released. i was introduced to the berzerker by a friend which was my introduction to death metal. i was into immortal and dimmu borgir for a little while but now am stuck on grindcore, death metal and gothenburg.

Born in '81, which makes me 24.
As a kid I listened to mostly pop/rock sort of stuff: Aerosmith, Bryan Adams, etc.
From my twelveth I got into commercial punk, bands like The Offspring, early Green Day. Quickly grew tired of that as it lacked a certain amount of aggression I was looking for.
Around my 14th I got introduced by Metallica through my older brother (who was growing towards a more alternative/grunge interest). Early Metallica instantly hit off with me, Slayer, Pantera and Sepultura were bound to follow. Got through that.
Few years later accidently I got two badly recorded tapes through a friend. One containing "World Demise" (Obituary) & "Breeding the Spawn" (Suffocation). The other: "Dream Deceiver" (Dead Head) and "Turn Loose the Swans" (My Dying Bride) - hardly surprising to say, I was hooked now to the more extreme forms of metal out there.
Been into death metal ever since. The last years my interest in extreme forms of doom has grew geometrically.

Well it all started with Korn really, I nicked my brothers copy of the self titled, this was at age 9. Then I got into slipknot when I heard them on some Dragonballz music vids. Than in about 2001 when I was about 10/11 I saw a review that said This band THe berzerker is heavier than slipknot and Im like "I MUST HAVE THIS" and I bought and from there I got into carcass, Morbid angel. I also got heavily into old school sepultura aswell, and slayer. After that I met a bloke from sydney who got me into all the good shit, Disgorge, Zyklon, Exhumed, Nile, Hate Eternal, Immortal etc etc
I gradually got myself into other bands like Mastodon, lethargy ( technical metal band with brann dailor and Bill) Immolation and a heap of other shit. Now I'm getting into as much different stuff, listen to anything from Dillinger escape plan to Enslaved to the berzerker. BRUTAL !
from... 4 to 8 or nine i listened to what my parents listened to. mostly things like queen or deep purple and so on.
from 9 i listened to rap. that was a bad time :(
when i was 13 or 14, i discovered that limp bizkit somehow sounded cool, so i bought the chocolate and so on cd. that drove me to korn, orgy, slipknot and so on.
with 15 i startet listening to bands like otep, soil, fear factory, little atrocity, machine head, coal chamber
and with end 16 beginning 17 i started listening to jack slater, the berzerker, iniquity, and so on...
now (nearly 18) i mostly listen to bands like in flames, dark tranquility, as i lay dying, six reasons to kill, killswitch engage etc.

Jesus, this thread, it still exists???
When I was in middle school, I liked some of the rap stuff. But little did I know that "Snap" wasn't really considered rap to that extent.
"I've got the power!"
I was in 7th grade. And I listened to Jesus Jones, I cannot hide, it any longer. I am not however, ashamed.
When I turned about 15 - 16 I decided that I didn't listen to that "shit" any more and sold/got rid of:
All my Queen cd's. This was more than one dozen. Even the imports, the fucking imports!
Any New Order or anything that might be gay. Not homo gay, just mostly gay spirited, or, happier that I as a human, am.
All my Def Leppard.
What else???...
When I turned 17 - 18 I decided again that I wouldn't listen to whatever it was I had:
Lords of Acid, Marilyn Manson, Nine Inch Nails halos 1 - 10, Prick, Pop Will Eat Itself, Skinny Puppy.
By the time I was 19 I had gained great cd's. What I thought was better, the best ever, Cannibal Corpse the bleeding/butchered at birth, Deicide once upon the cross, Sepultura beneath the remains. Etc.
Noticing any genre pattern?
But after all these years, I am sad that I sold most of that stuff.
I still have "Skinny Puppy's too dark park" which is scratched to hell, but still enjoyable.
Ten years I've had that cd.
Even though it fueled the cash to buy cd's I would receive in years to come, I miss much of it, even if one whole cd was terrible, yet had one great song.
Example: New Order's "republic". I just re-bought it for $3, and paid for one song on it called "avalanche". The rest I decided, I couldn't really listen to very much, if I did at all.
Now I listen to a lot of things. I like the eclectic mix, and not the same old only
one
style
of
music.
Because all that is really doing,
is minimizing your potential of finding something you might like even more than the norm...

I am still growing up also. My musical tastes are still changing.
When I was really young, my dad played a bunch of classic rock around me. I can remember rocking out to Space Trucking by Deep Purple. I didn't seek out to listen to my own music until I was 9. From 9-11 I was a rap fan. I got into System of a Down at 12 and I have been into metal ever since.
I thinks its really weird how most metalhead liked rap at some point.

being just 16 now.......
age 5 i got a free wheelin' tape from a woman called rose, with a bunch of old biker songs on it. my huge taste in rock and metal music started from that age in 1998 i started listening to "mate. feed. kill. repeat" by slipknot (the first EP before corey jonied and a few other members, when they were only a 5piece), i then heard paranoid by black sabbath on the radio and got that album some time soon, keep in mind i wasnt ten yet. by 2000 i was introduced to bands such as napalm death and carcass... up to the present day:
the berzerker, morbid angel, at the gates, gorgoroth, blood has been shed....
and some hardcore/screamo -------> real stuff not silverstein
so yea basically metal has been in my blood since age 5, 11 years
