View Full Version : Mayhem ripped off portuguese fans

This is a true story, my friends.
In May 2001, Mayhem were to play one gig (their first) in Portugal, at the Steel Warriors Rebellion/Barroselas Metalfest (www.swr-fest.com), a fest in which iīm involved in the organization. Band scheduled were, between others, Yattering, Krabathor, Groinchurn, Avulsed and 20 more or so...
Everything was going as planned, my girlfriend and one other friend of mine went to the Lisbon airport to pick up the band. The flight arrived but, surprisingly, the band didnīt.
We received the info that the band was not allowed to get into the plane in Amsterdam (here they had to change plane, coming from Oslo) because they were too drunk and, as everybody knows, nobody can enter the plane in such a state.
We made one extra effort to fix another flight (and therefore, we would pay them new tickets), but we were told by Mr. Necrobutcher that some members had left the airport and already were 2 hours far from the airport...
Result:
We got ripped off in half of the cachet and the money from the flights. As you people can imagine, this is not few money. And due to the fact that we are an underground organization, not making any profit, and organizing this metalfest just for the love and support for the underground, it was a strong turnback for us.
The portuguese fans were so much pissed off with us at first, because they thought that weīd only put the Mayhem name just to bring more people...fortunately everybody realised what happened.
One last thing:
Since those happenings, nobody from the band tried to get in touch with us, not even an apology to the fans nor the staff from the fest. They still owe us all that money (around 5000 euros).
Now make our own conclusions...is it worth to support people like this?

As long as they make good music I enjoy, they got my support.
About your money, it's not ok that it happened. But isn't it a bit pathetic to go onto this forum to whine about your bad experience? It's not like suddenly people would stop enjoying and supporting Mayhem...
Instead of posting your story here I'd suggest you try to make some form of contact with the band or their agency or whatever

Mayhem are fucked up, unreliable guys. What do you expect, a professional tour and entourage, drinking watermelon juice backstage with their personal trainers?
Don't get me wrong, im going to see them on Monday, and i'm going to be beyond pissed off if they cancel or fuck up in some way. But thats chaos for you. They are not a run of the mill "professional" black metal band, and certainly not businessmen.
Surely your qualm should be with the record label, who (i'd assume) are responsible for such aspects of the band.

Hm certainly that is a lot of money.. which isn't okay. I suggest you take it up with the label.

1- The show was agreed between us (the organization) and the band, directly (more precisely, Necrobutcher, who I understand is responsible for the booking). We have mutual friends, so we would never think that something like this could ever happen. Even if Season of Mist had NOTHING to do with this, they were the only ones that care a bit, at least they sent a (small) press release to Terrorizer Mag apologizing the portuguese fans (this was something the band had obligation to do, I think), but they underlined the fact that this was 100% responsability of the band.

2- Itīs not my goal to change peopleīs minds about the band.In fact, I couldnīt care less. My aim is to let people know what kind of men (??? I have serious doubts...) they are, and to alert potencial gig or festival organizers for their unprofessionalism and childish attitudes...
And for the ones who are thinking: "suit them!"... well, do you know how shitty the International Law system is??
If the band care a little bit about the people who buys their records and pays to see them perform, it was THEIR obligation to try to arrange another gig...but no. They didnīt even care to make an apology...Which means they donīt give a fuck for all of you guys, all they do is send your hard-earned money up their noses.
Iīm anxious to Wacken Open Air...it will be my chance to meet them face to face. Iīve heard from some people that Blasphemer even trembles when he heards the word Portugal.

After 3 years, I don't think its the best idea to have a word about the Portugese gig with Mayhem at Wacken! Obviously what they did wasn't right, but I think its a bit late to start this whole "lets slag off Mayhem, because they didn't turn up" business now.
The Kings of Black Metal at the Metal Festival of Metal Festivals..."should be" somewhat amazing!
...and there's no need to be slagging off Blasphemer! He seemed like a nice enough guy when I met him last Thursday. You yourself said Necrobutcher was in charge of the booking.

They certainly do NOT care a flying fuck about their fans, without whom they would be just the pathetic beings they actually are, only without records in shops. I lost all my consideration on them after having met them in Ljubljana, after having seen mr. Poser Stubberud denying an autograph on my original Deathcrush and after having witnessed to one of the most boring shows of my life. I was aware of the fact they were a DEAD band musically speaking, but never in my wildest dreams would I have expected them to be so childish. I'd rather give my money to some homeless junkie than investing it on that crappy new "album" they have released. Alastor, I know it counts for nothing, but you have my complete solidarity. Sue those 40yo lazy wankers off, they deserve a big "fuck off" from ALL metal people (at least those with a working brain).

May I ask why not? They can rip us off in 5000 euros and we donīt have the right to ask for an explanation? After all it will be the first chance I have to meet them face to face, and if they are grown up people (which I seriously doubt...) they will have no problems to talk about it

Hey my boy...thereīs so many people that seems nice, until you really start dealing with them. In which world do you live..?
You yourself said Necrobutcher was in charge of the booking.
Yes, but ME MYSELF (ahah...) also said that all the band was fucked up at the airport, didnīt I?
Sue those 40yo lazy wankers off
I wish, Mr Lex..but dealing with international law sues would cost even more than the money weīve lost...
Anyway, thank you for being one of the few people here who really seems to have a brain, hehe..

Alastor, I 100% know how you feel. I'm an inch older than most of the people here (will turn 29 next november) and have been working myself as gig organizer in the past, getting LOTSA troubles from unprofessional parasites as u did. I know how it is like with international laws as I have a degree in law, but still, if you at least have some kind of signed piece of paper in your hands (I always used to when arranging gigs, too many bad experiences), you can report them to your local authorities. That is free. I also suggest you, spread the news in all boards you're used to write in (www.fmp666.com board is always pretty crowded, for example), at least people interested into arranging further Mayhem gigs will be warned against those wimps. I perfectly know how it is like and if I was you I'd probably beat the shit out of Necrodwarfbutcher (I think he's no more than 1.60 m tall) in Wacken. I know this is not much of a concrete help, but keep on fighting for the real underground, we need people like you, not braindead 40yo wimps who act like if they were Beatles or something.
take care

Ok, I can see why you want to have a word with them at Wacken, but "I" just think that 3 years down the line is a bit late to discuss this kind of thing. Maybe if I was in your position I would want to do the same thing.
I'm not on Mayhems side here...I think what they did was pretty damn out of order. I'd be even more sympathetic if I was a gig promoter.
Perhaps I sounded a bit juvenile about Blasphemer...but I can only base that on meeting him in London. Yes, a lot of people are completely different when you talk business with them, and I realise this...but "My boy"...I didn't need to be patronised as if I was about 15.

WTF have you been smoking?
Some more news regarding this topic:
Blasphemer answered an interview to a portuguese magazine. At least, and for the first time, he admitted everything that happened. He also said that the band almost ended that day, due to internal conflicts generated by those happenings...
Itīs a pity that they didnīt go forward with that decision. Maybe next time...

Well well...
Itīs true that Blasphemer is living in Portugal right now. Heīs together with a girl whoīs vocalist on a goth/ambient band called Aenima. Even if heīs living 400 km from where I live, now weīll have the possibility to talk...
