I don't think it's a mistake. I don't have any examples, or nothing. But I think that it isn't a mistake.

-edit- 100th post btw! Wohoo!

Personally i like it , adds more elements to the music and shows that the band has diversity

It really depends on how it is done in my opinion.

i personally dont think it is bad that heavy bands dip into a bit of melody...
i think it is important for a band to play exactly what they want, whether its the berzerker or slipknot, both are playing the way they want to and i respect them for that.
look at carcass...GRIND GRIND GRIND....Melody.... however there arent to many bands out there that can do it well.

i dont mind it. being a big fan of opeth it would be hard not to mind it. i think more than anything it would further emphasise how good the singer really is. to be able to scream fuckin good is one thing, but to be able to sing clean vocals well aswell is a feat not many are able to do.

I think if there were no melody at all, a lot of things would get boring...
It depends on the band / song though, I guess...
Suffocation has a melody that I cannot describe, it is wonderful.
It is absolutely perfect.:p

the term 'melody' can mean different things to different people, plus the extent of 'melody' matters as well.

EG, a "Metal" band that overplays melody starts to lose their "metalness", whereas a band that uses 'melody' or 'groove' (which to me is in a similar vein) cleverly or subtlely can often be seen as a very good band etc.

That's one of the things that appeals to me about The Berzerker, not just the intense adrenalising effect but the Carcass-like grooves of the riffage. You can't say The Berzerker are stereotypically "melodic" but to me melody is just something that's more instantly accessible and likeable than white noise, so by that reckoning anything that you find instantly appealling (drums, riffs, vox) could be classed as "melodic".

I personally like bands with melody.
My favorite band is metlalica by far and i saw them in january.
I do like really heavy stuff though, like berzerker.
I love slayer too
