greetings everyone...

how many of us here play guitar? mind sharing what's your gear like?

one of the reasons why i listen to Mayhem is because Blasphemer is one of the more capable players in the black metal genre. he can pretty much shred & grind but all his efforts reflect a need for the song in its entirity, never an excess of guitars at the expense of the song's coherence. re-listen to Grand Declaration & Chimera; you'll hear various overdubbed parts which reflect Blasphemer's dedication as a guitar player. how many of the black metal guitar players would actually do fills & manipulate guitar tones with volume swells/ fade just to give the song a bit more colour? not many that i can think of...

my gear:

Guitars: Ibanez/ BC Rich/ Fender/ PRS/ Gibson
Amp: Peavey XXL
Effects: None (i shelved all pedals after the XXL acquisition)

I got a black Kramer with 2 single coil pick ups and a humbucker going through a Epiphone 15watt amp and a Dod death metal distortion pedal. Doesnt sound that great but its bearable. I been playing about 3 years on and off and can play some Mayhem stuff. My dream gear would be like a BC Rich Warlock with an EMG 81 into a Marshall JCM.

hey good to see guitar fans here...

hellspawn: if you are serious about playing, do upgrade to a better amp. a small practice amp can't quite manifest your guitar's real capacity. hey, i own the DOD Death Metal pedal too! it's gives off that typical treble-excessive metal tone of the '80s... it's an exhibition piece now since i retired all my pedals...

i contemplated to tread the active path (EMG pickups) but having heard one in use, i choose to remain passive. the EMG is a very good unit for super high gain settings but it makes all the guitars equipped with this humbucker, sound very generic. Blasphemer's BC Rich Warlock is equipped with humbuckers, that's the super crunchy sound we hear in Grand Declaration/ Chimera & i ever hear it in Aura Noir's 'Black Trash Attack' (feat Blasphemer of course).

masonite: if it's a 'Blazer' chances are it's a Peavey amp...

I love playing my guitars. I'm glad I started because I reallt needed something to do... And I can play black metal myself.

I have:
Jackson KE3 Kelly(Japan) with stock picups.
Fenter fat strat(mexico) with stock picups.
Westone raider bass(crap)
Marhall jmc 800 bass amp with 4x12 and a boss metalzone for distortion.

I am saving for better humbucker(s) for my Jackson. I would like something from Gibson or Seymour Duncan. I am no fan of EMG, I think they are crap.
Better distortion could also be nice, but I am quite happy with my current gear really.

wron: why an EDR model? any reasons in particular?

friends, if you wish to acquire a whammy equipped Ibanez model, do get one without the TRS floating whammies. get back here if you wanna know why i said so...

nidhogg: the only Gibson pickups i like are the 500T & 496R. the rest remain muddy nevermind if they are equipped in high end Gibson guitars, they sound undefined when it comes to single bass notes. i'm a recent Duncan convert maybe you can tell me what you have in mind- i've been through many Duncan models (& Dimarzio too).

i've tried the KE-3 myself & yeah, the pickups could've been better.

perhaps i can show you my Fender tele which was souped up to handle black metal tones. both the pickups are Duncan:

I have tried a few gibsons guitars at a store, and the one with the 500t was the one I liked best.
I am thinking about the Seymour Duncan JB in the bridge, but I havent goten to try it yet. What the stores sells of humbuckers is limited in norway...
I'm planing to buy one humbucker first, because I can only aford one at the moment, and I want to se if it's really worth it.

...and I have a Peavy Bandit amp. I've been playing for 4 years, so I can handle the axe quite well. I think I'm gonna buy a new guitar soon, maybe a BC-Rich Beast or something like that

i respect the Peavey Bandit- it's a very impressive amp & it doesn't cost a bomb... when i visit my dealer, i always audition guitars through this amp...

the Duncan JB is a very versatile humbucker. it has a unique midrange response that'll supplement both the bass & the treble. listen to Emperor's live album & you'll hear the JB in Samoth's guitar (Jackson RR). the good thing about this pickup is that it responses well with loads of distortion dialled in.

the Gibson with the 500T is very likely to be the Les Paul Classic. the other impressive Gibson humbucker that slipped my mind is the Iommi model. for the record, Blasphemer did use a Gibson with the 500T in it- the Gothic Flying V (discontinued).

let's see now... my oldest guitar is 13yrs old come this December so that's reflective of how long i've been playing i guess...

i own an Ibanez RG7620 & it's one of the best in my arsenal. it's about knowing which guitar to play when the need arises, that's how i feel after all these years. when it comes to Ibanez, ignore the commercial publicity & judge the guitars in their own stead. if it's not appealing to your needs, then move on. they don't give a hoot as to whoever in the black metal scene plays their products because they need people to sell their wares. personally, if i'm Ibanez, i'll endorse Morbid Angel's Trey Azagthoth & Marduk's Morgan, as these chaps pick up an ibanez 7string guitar without being paid to do so...

try out the new Bandit, it might just surprise you. i like both the old & new incarnations.

the EDR is a decent guitar, make sure you get the version sans the TRS trem. if you don't whammy, then check out the offerings frm the SZ series (IMO the best value-for-$$$ set neck guitar in the market, period) & if it's available at your dealer's, try the RG321.

man! gear is something that I've been changing alot lately! years ago i'd play my 89' bc rich platinum warlock through a 100 watt valvestate but i never liked the sound of the stock distortion on that much even though others raved about it all the time and many death metal bands used it... so when i was a total idiot back then i'd plug my guitar first into a distortion pedal using a regular guitar cable even and then from there pluge it into the clean channel of the amp and i used a metalzone and sometimes death metal DOD distortion and i got some incredible sounds at low volumes but the sound would always fart out on me eventually. but at the time i was too stupid to even take the right care of my gear.
SO...
all these years later? first amp i tried after getting back into playing was a marshall mode four. I kept it for a couple weeks and ruled the band and everyone else around but it was too much, and too costly and i couldnt even turn it up so loud at band practice so... i deicided to keep looking I went through solid state marshall, crate 120h, blue voodoo 120,but i took all those back and now i've finally settled on two amps! my setup is a 50 watt marshall avt head with 200 watt avt slant cab and i swear this thing with the one little tube in it smokes all the solid state 100 watters and even some other tube amps. the distortion on this i feel is plenty and whats amazing is that it stays completely clear and punchy at maximum gain level and only gets better turned up to middle. the other head i have ordered right now is a jcm 800 for i now love marshall amps and when i want to truly destroy everyone around with both gain and volume i wanna have that one with all the fuckin' tubes! i think blasphemer has one in his rig along with that 350 watt blue voodoo i think it is underneath it in the pics. as for guitars i started with b.c. rich warlock and the same ones lasted all this time since 89' and is still in remarkable playing condition though slightly modified with a passive EMG-style ultrasonic pickup in the bridge that just sounds soo raw n cool. so i am sticking to b.c. rich guitars forever and i don't feel as metal playing anything else than a warlock or a similar style guitar. i got three of them now all with different action but all with 10's gauge strings for maximum black metal crunching rythm section and blistering harmonics. one kerry king wartribe that comes in the pack the new ones, and a 2004 body art "the fly" which is rivaling my original as my favorite guitar it's action with the 10's is so heavy but never hard to play it's so fuckin light too and looks cool in my opinion. and i just use the stock pickups that b.c. rich offers because allready they sound plenty bad and no need to rush an EMG or something. Yeah those Emg's mu be a partial fad because if you listen closely a guitars stock pickups should be right most of the time and those arent probably that much better for black metal than the cheapo humbuckers are... i fully endorse the use of 15 watt amps in bedrooms everywhere! my experience playing my 15 watt crate in my room was the best though. i would even go as far as to record with 15 watts no problem because you can still get a really cool sound out of less watts sometimes.

i really love marshall amps, when you find a good one that has no problems its real crunching magic! i seriously recommend that you get a valvestate instead of the solid state MGDFX head. the 150 watt head that comes with a ton of effects on it that only complicate things and add a cluttered look to the panel is around 700 bucks, the AVT50 watt head or combo would really amaze when put up against the MG solid state model. the difference is about a hundred bucks more expensive for the valvestate but the plus is way more gain, sustain, tone, and overall marshall integrity the AVT posesses. really, i cant even recall marshall ever putting out a solid state head before that recent one and it's not the best for metal either

I play my Aria SL I've been told they're a very rare guitar but it's very good for death/thrash black metal riffs because of the humbucker and has a cool neck pick-up that's good for sweeped arpeggios too

ah, the Marshall gathering...

between the MG & the AVT, ask yourself what your needs are- do you need on-board FX? or do you need a good Marshall tone to get inspired? then address this need, without penalising yourself too much budget wise. bring your guitar down to your dealer's & audition the amp personally.

Marshall is offering the players with 2 alternatives for its non-valve tone, the MG & the AVT. i see it as an overkill, unless the MG significantly covers the tones absent in the AVT. if you are not bent on the Marshall brand name, do consider other brands, notably Peavey when it comes to solidstate technology. the Peavey of today has a revised philosophy when it comes to transistor amplification. i have been ignoring them ever since i purchased my Marshall tube combo but i guess my needs now are different.

To keep my tubes in good condition as long as posible, I have my marhall amp on standby at least to minutes before and after I play to warm and cool the amp down... But do it harm the amp/tubes to have it on stanby for a longer time, lets say 2 hours? Anyone who knows?

putting tubes on standby without playing the amp is going to affect its life, especially if it's left idle for hours- why is this the case to begin with? care to share?. when you do that, you have the amp on, it's just that you aren't using it.

guitars i'm referring to. sometimes it sounds standard E othertimes dropped D and other times half step down. i own some live shows on video and i still cant tell if blasphemer is playing deathcrush dropped D or not at times
