View Full Version : The new Mayhem is growing on me...
...slowly, but it's happening. I didn't like it at first. Now I can see where they're going with this style...

I must admit that i'm living the opposite situation. I liked Chimera for about 3 days, but the more i listen to it, the more disappointed i am.
All the songs sound the same...it's so bland. There's no stand out riffs or anything. I cannot even remember how a certain song sounds like :(. They can do way better than that, WLA and GDoW proved it.

as a whole, Chimera isn't as big as the sum of its parts. i have identified certain favourite tracks & is of the opinion that some tracks in there should be done away with to avoid that sinking feeling when one listens to it. but i have the utmost respect for this release, it remains cutting edge conceptually, something many black metal proponents are afraid to embrace.
ditto Anfang. fans of DMDS find Grand Declaration a disgrace but it's thematically a brilliant album. i hold it in high regards to date. the latter release had somehow dichotomised Mayhem fans which is a sad occurence: those who embrace Euronymous era Mayhem & the Grand Declaration legion. we should accept Mayhem in all its incarnations. we should take the cue from the current line-up themselves; these individuals didn't disclaim the band's glorious past, did they? especially when their current indulgences constantly illustrate signs of deviations from their past...

The new album by Mayhem is awesome. It's still dark and fast paced (for the most part) and it's cool to see a band change their style to something that doesn't suck, like Dimmu Borgir and Cannibal Corpse. The guitars and drums are outstanding on this album. The timing is absolutely chaotic but perfect. Upon my first listen, I had no idea what was going to come next. Like on the second track, dark night of the soul, it was kinda slow and boring for awhile but then it gets very intense and nearly incomprehensible. The flow of things keep changing. You can tell that the Mayhem guys put a lot of time into this album. And Blasphemer puts a lot of really neat additional guitar parts in these songs. I play in a "band" by myself and probably could do the same thing, but I'm a lazy bastard, unlike Blasphemer. Overall, great album. If you disagree, you don't know crap about music. If you think Deathcrush was more clever, you're wrong. All those songs are very easy to play and are very simplistic. But it was still a cool album.

First of all, ever heard of the term 'personal taste'?
Secondly, since when good music and complexity are synomyms?

Euronymous & Blasphemer are 2 differernt players propelling the same Mayhem, the outputs are evidently different, i think we can hear this pretty much for ourselves.

Yeah, yeah, ok. Then I should state this: IN MY OPINION, Blasphemer is far superior. Plus, I think that complexity gives music more relistening value. I can listen to Wolf's Lair Abyss, GDOW, and Chimera a lot more than I can listen to the old stuff, but I think that the old stuff is awesome too.
