First, the setting: A dark and stormy night, of course, 11 or 12 years after the Norse Wave of great Black Metal.
The situation: many of the early guys are dead, incarcerated or
have sold-out ( Garm comes to mind.)
The question: is there going to be a postBlack metal wave of creative new music?
The Candidates:
Aborym, their latest having pretty much been the epitome ( so far !!) of the Industrial/Techno/Black hybrid introduced by Thorns vs Emperor, 666 International,..., and their own earlier and lesser releases.
Thorns s/t , left me wanting more ( and wanting Aldrahn and/or Satyr to remain as part of this project.
No one knows wtf DhG is doing of course: if you even try to figure out who plays what instrument you're going to get dizzy and quit in short order.
...and Oceans appeared headed toward something new, but on Cypher chose mainstream Rock instead.
Red Harvest has moved away from Black Metal ( as much as they were ever Black at all) , but there's always hope they'll revert. :)
Frost made a worthy contribution with Talking To God
Dimmu... is less Black , but notably better on each album.
MAYHEM pushed the boundaries of Black Metal really hard on GDW and have now pulled back a bit with Chimera. I spin it in rotation with Shining III Angst and Volcano late at night.
It's a smoother, more homogenous style of Black Metal for sure, and perhaps the common elements of those 3 albums, fused with a bit of the Techno/Industrial/Noise influences will all clump into a New BlackWave .
What's some more bands that are developing beyond basic Black?
Oh...never mind Black Death bands, I'm aware.
