Newbie here. Been an Alchemist fan since I nicked Lunasphere of a friend of mine 5 odd years ago.
I'd like to know, why do you like Alchemist?
I for one, was completely and utterly drawn in by their unique sound. Most specifically, their leads. No band I have ever heard write such trippy, yet melodic leads. Not to mention excellent song writing and some amazing drumming. In my humble opinion, the best Australia metal band and a band that should be held in high esteem by all metalheads.
Long live Alchemist.
Why do I like alchemist?
Wow, what a global question! This is pretty hard for me to answer because there are so many things I like about the band and their music - and I don't want to forget a single one!
In my opinion they manage a very, very rare feat: Their music features complex, technical rhythms that are groovy as hell at the same time. On top of this basement there is the most beautiful melodies ever but they don't get on my nerves (like all these melodic Metal-bands do ...) because of the awesome rhythm section.
I never thought keyboards or synthesizers have a place in Metal until I heard Alchemist so they're special to me even in this regard.
And what can I say about Adam's singing? It just makes my blood boil! He's absolutely unique, more expressive than Kenn Nardi of Anacrusis (R.I.P.), better shrieks than King Diamond, lovely shouting, etc.
I love the way these guys write their stuff! Have I ever been bored by an Alchemist-song? No, I never have (which often happens to me with other bands such as Metallica, Sepultura, Kreator, etc.). Do I discover new details every time I listen to their stuff even though I know their albums inside out? You bet your ass!!! Their music is highly demanding but at the same time easily accessible - who else can claim the same?
I enjoy following the red line from their early efforts to their current tunes which denotes a straight forward progress. I don't know anything even remotely like it (Voivod eat your heart out!). I'd say they're a progressive band, but "Progressive Metal" is such a bad name now due to the lackluster bands that prominently feature it that I don't want to put Alchemist nywhere near it.
I highly value their lyrics, too. This aspect is of great importance to me and I praise them for not delivering the average cliche-ridden Metal-singalongs.
What stands out as well is the artwork by Roy. It turns their music into a whole piece of art. I'd never bootleg their albums for that fact alone - and I've had many people ask me about copies!
So this was what I thought about Alchemist before I finally got to see them play live and meet them in person. Boy, this was an experience! They don't speak in that awesome Aussie accent but otherwise they are just as nice and easy-going guys as Aussies are reputed to be. While I was with them I got a feeling of how they are able to compose the ever-evolving kind of music that's already become their trademark. And when I saw them play their stuff live all this was lifted to a completely new level of artistry!
All in all that's why I think Alchemist is the best band - not only from Australia, but the best band, period.

In short, I like 'em because not only do they sound unique, but great.

OK, so I'm an old school metalhead from way back... My favourite overseas bands are without a doubt Judas Priest, Black Sabbath, and Dio. So what's a rapidly ageing melodic 70's and 80's metal fan like me doing digging this band to the point where I'm actually wearing an Alchemist T?
Easy, they're without a doubt the most original metal band I've ever heard, they're far easier on the ear than so many of the 'extreme' metal bands I've heard, and probably most importantly..... They're AUSSIES!
Alchemist have been rocking my socks off since I heard Lunasphere not long after it was released. I've got all the albums, Spiritech and Organasm are undoubtably my personal faves, plus I've seen the lads live on The Gold Coast, and even had a beer with them out the back!
So if you see me at the Brisbane gig in November, please don't break my walking stick, let the tyres down on my wheelchair or kick my Labrador, I'm a genuine Alchemist fan!
Peace, Glen.
