They all have something special and are hard to compare, but I'll go for 'Live in Leipzig' (rahter good quality live recording in the classic line up) and 'Dawn of the black hearts' (just for the cover and also because this was an important show in Black Metal history).
This being said, I truly love their other releases too (old as wel as new mayhem).

'Live in Leipzig' is god-awful garbage; 'De Mysteriis..' is pretty crappy, too (though not as bad as when I first heard it). My favorite used to be 'Grand Declaration...', but the more I listen to 'Chimera', the better I like it... definitly 'Chimera'.

O.K., what exactly do you guys like about those albums? Attila's annoying vocals on 'De Mystriis...' (though the song structures are good)? Euronymous' guitar styling like a drunken garage-band member who thinks he's better then he is (and sounding like he's played for a good year, too!)? The "necro" production on 'Live...' that wasn't intentional but neccesary due to the budget? I just don't get it...

So I'm not Black Metal, huh? Alright. But this is what I was trying to talk about: I made ONE point about production and the rest about the execution of the songs. Pagan Fears is a great song, so is Funeral Fog and a hand full of others (Deathcrush...). I just like them when the sound quality can match the musicianship (as both can now). D.M.D.S. is the foundation of a genre... I'll grant that... but no, I didn't like the vocals or guitar.

I appreciate your opinion and comments. I understand what you mean about the sheer energy and dark emotions that those early releases project: some of my favorite music is early Burzum, Emperor and Graveland (concerning production values, my main gripe was with 'Live...' which I know most people like). Maniac does come across alittle flat and contrived sometimes (and I'd love to hear Dead sing 'Fall of Seraphs'), but I feel by and large that he's able to pull it off and still show Mayhem's vision to the world, good production and all... at least on the recordings...

To be honest, and this is not to disrespect old mayhem because I truly love them, there isn't too much dark riffing in Deathcrush or PFA. DMDS is another story of course.

Those who prefer a shitty bootleg of a old ass show whom was attended by 30 persons make me laugh so hard. I have the Dawn of the black... and Live at Leipzig and they are so crappy I'm so happy I never spent a single cent to get those.

I really wonder what the hell makes those boolegs so special. Is it Dead. I hate Dead and I say good riddance. The songs that ended up on the De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas are 10 times tighter and darker and meaner. Attila's vocals are so much better too compared to shitty Dead. I'm sure he was so small he had tiny tiny lungs that couln't hold half the breath Maniac can, he can't even sing on time damnit. I won't even start about his pseudo dark lyrics because you know, you don't kick a man when he's down (or dead). Let's just say he was not gifted... and he shredded his pants on purpose just to look meaner. How much of a poser is that?

By the way,as much as I love D.M.D.S, I think the line up now is far more supperior, as far as music and lyrics and sound quality are concerned. Chimera is one helluva record and if you still are whining about the good ol' days and about how the true mayhem died years ago and bla bla bla, then just kill yourself, it's the best thing you can do (since suicide is for loooosers) and get off the message board of a band who's better than fucking ever.

Anyway, just my opinion. feel free to argue with what I said, I'll enjoy reading your answers. seriously they're very funny.

This thread started out as our opinion of the best Mayhem CD we have. We obviously all have all of them, so we all like Mayhem. Some of us like the older stuff more (Fadeless, Atomikk...) and some like the newer stuff (Me... and I guess 'brown power' there<ugh...!>). I shouldn't have been so initially defamitory towards the old stuff (though I still stand by what I said), 'cause this is about the CD we like, not hate. If you like what they do now, listen to them (or the new Keep of Kalessin, for that matter...); if not, pop in 'Deathcrush' and go to town. They're never goin' back to D.M.D.S., but I for one am interested in their next one.
