Impaled Nazarene is really good fast black. kinda thrashy and punky, too. Get their latest album "All That You Fear", and their older shit.
And, if you like Absu, get Melechesh - Spynhx(host both of their forums, too). Proscriptor(drummer of Absu) is also in Melechesh, fucking GREAT mesopotamian metal.

Anyway, we have a pretty good scene here in Sweden. I recently picked up a signed copy of Setherial's "Nord...", very good!

Their music became so uninspired after Stormblast. It's so cliché and hollow...I cannot event point out a memorable riff or drumbeat on their 4 last releases.
All they do is writting music by numbers. There's no spirit in that band anymore. They just sound like a bunch of robots.
I liked the early Dimmu.. stuff ok.
It's their last 3 albums that I play.
Puritanical.. is my fave but the last one and Spiritual.. are good also.
I don't think of them as Black Metal, I laugh at their corpsepaint and matching stage garb ( though I also laughed when the singer perfermoed in his cute leather skirt :) ) and I could care less if they are popular or not: the music is well made by an actual BAND, not just a project, and is performed competently on stage by talented musicians.
***HaHa, when I saw them last Nov in SF the sound and lights were fucked and annoying. Just thought I'd bitch about that again.

I like the newer stuff more. The old 'real BM' seemed generic and boring. Plus not goosd in the first place.
The new stuff is really good I love the symphonic stuff! It actually make sit sound great instead of some fuckin static shit like Immortal or Marduk (I can only listen to them when in the right mood).
And with the corpsepaint im not norwegian so i aint really down wit' what it actually means so i just think it looks fuckin cool on anyone :D

but they are black metal, there is nopthing you can classify them as other than black metal.

Of course Mayhem. Probably my favorite overall. Dissection are one of the greatest black metal bands ever. Burzum made some of the finest records of all time that will always be classics. Ulver must be mentioned because they are so unique and creative. Unpredictable. Darkthrone always keep it real. They refuse to change. The polar opposite of Ulver. I guess everybody mentions the same bands and I guess it's for a reason. But I really don't like Cradle Of Filth at all. Terrible. Great musicians though. Are they even considered black metal anymore? I know they used to call themselves that a long time ago. No more, right? At The Gates are good. Marduk are sometimes great. I thought "World Funeral" was real good.

sea-green Absurd, Akitsa, Nargaroth, Thors Hammer, Hate Forest, Mayhem (rip 93), WW2, of course Hellhammer, Celtic Frost (rip 85), Grafvolluth, BloodSStorm, Nachtmystium, Pest (Swe), Behemoth (demos only), Graveland (old). Also check out Amebix, Nausea (NYC), and Detestation. Their not black metal, but their all very influenced by Venom and Celitc Frost and kind of kept that old school feel alive within the punk/crust scene.

To Anti-Gayhem: I can respect you admitting your N.S. view on things, but it sucks how alot of fans are convinced of Mayhem having died in 1993. True, that was a great band that started a whole movement which has grown worldwide, but we cannot deny what came after. They are valid. They've continued to do great work.

how about "Unblack"{coined by Jayson Sherlocke of Mortification,Paramaecium, etc, As well as the guy behind HORDE Which is where the term is from, the album was called "Hellig Usvart' or -Holy Unblack, Personally even though I like the music of the album-I was not impressed w/how he so rudely parodied Euronymous by calling himself 'Anonymous'}.
Gotaa understand, I was a Christian for 25 years up until about 3-4 months ago{after a few years of questioning the christian faith} and as such I got deeply into the Christian metal scene.
I am no longer Christian as of the last several weeks, but most of the stuff I have{sadly} is still Christian stuff. I can't afford alot of music right now-So I can't afford to replace it all w/secular stuff at the moment-But I do plan on buying more non-christian stuff asap; however, I do still think 'some' of the Christian bands are very good musicians and will still stay fans of a few, such as ANTESTOR, SORROWSTORM, DROTTNAR And some of the Christian ahem..um...'death' metal bands like Crimson Thorn and Vomitorial Corpulence, etc and of course the 'born-again' MR.Alice Cooper-whom though he is now a christian-I still think he kicks ass regardless!
I am now a deist, and fairly against christian fundamentalism, but I am by no means a satanist or hedonist or anyhting{though I am a bit pagan/pantheistic}. But as far as the 'satanic stuff goes-I personally am of the same mind frame as the boys from bands such as Emperor, anyone whom sings about satan and stuff is just a christian{satan being a judeo-christian and muslim concept}. Which is just as oxymoronish as they claim Christian metal to be{both are singing about Christian concepts}. Personally-if a band is good musically-I'll support them.
Hope that's cool w/you guys.

To Iconoclast, and other opinion-withoutknowledge posters, and to those who think there is a "Christian" Black Metal:
Black metal was created out of hatred for Christianity, and to bring about the resurgence of Paganism and Satanism. Someone who says "a Satanist is just like a Christian", is a fool. Read The Satanic Bible and then see what you think. As a Christian for the first 13 years of my life, I always felt guilty listening to most of the bands I listened to. After I renounced Christianity, I found that life was more entertaining and that there is more involved than what Christians try to make you believe. I don't call myself a Satanist, (well, not really anyway) but any form of lifestyle and ideology that goes against Christianity and for the nature in man, to me, is worthy of utmost respect. "Christian Black Metal?" Give me a break...That's like calling Creed Satanists. Christianity has no place in black, or any metal scene in my opinion.

I mean you no offense man.
I was a christian for the first 25 years of my life and recently walked away from it and am now a deist w/some pantheistic and pagan{and possible christian mystic} ideas.
So, I relate to you man.
I mention the christian bands because it's the majority of what I've known so far musically as far as the black metal music 'sound' goes, I still like many of them because they make good "music", I'm of the opinion that I don't give a crap what the bands sing about, satan,Christ,Odin, or whatevr, if they make good music-they've got my vote.
However, I still stand by my opinion that Satanism and Christianity are closely linked. Metal was started as a rebellion against christianity to a larger degree-yes; however, the original rebellionwas an immature one based out of hatred{geared mostly towards the organized religion than Jesus himself}rather than true insight and intellect.
You are a Laveyan satanist, you use satan as metaphor for hedonism and self oriented ideas. Fine, I addressed the fact that to sing about worshipping satan{a christian concept} and killing Jesus{whose divinty is a christian concept} is really all counterproductive. If one does not beleive in Jesus as the son og God or in Jehovah, why sing songs of hatred and of killing geared towards a god, a messiah and angels you do not even beleive in{helping to perpetuate the christian mythology thus}.
As far as Laveyan satanism goes, I don't understand how it can be productive to perpetuate the christian myths and concepts by even using the christian concpet perosn/fallen angel of Satan or Lucifer. What is the point?
why not simply just be a Pagan, a deist, an agnostic, aathiest,whatever and use these terms to describe your beliefs that happen to go agaisnt the grain of christendom{but not only Christiandom, but all "revealed religions" including Judaism and Islam and others, why focus all the attack on christianity when 1}you don't even beleive in it, and 2} it is'nt the only absolutist faith claiming to be the only way to god?}
It all seems so counterproductive,un-intlellectual and just childish hate at one particular faith, as opposed to using reason,facts,etc-in a tolerant way in order to diminish christianity{and other revealed religions} stronghold, the childish hatred really just serves their purpose-because it it gives them fuel to say-look these people are so full of hate and violence and they don't want peace or truth to prevail, so consequently most people are more drawn to these "revealed religions" instead of the truth that you wish to get out into the world, becaue they used a more mature approach then those who used immature hatefullness to try to further their cause.
As a Laveyan using a christian concept of satan as a symbol, you just help to perpetuate christianitys myhtological stronghold on society.
to me this is just counterproductive.
and again, I supprt a good band regardless of it's beleifs, because to me-it's about music.
that's all
later
'You are a Laveyan satanist, you use satan as metaphor for hedonism and self oriented ideas.'
***
Was that meant for me ? :)
I'm no kind of satanist at all; I'm a Pragmatist, a type of Humanist who has decided not to worry about ultimate and ultimately uknowable causes ( such as gods or whatever) and devote my attention to this fucked up world in which I actually live.
I despise all religions pretty much equally: fairy tales, the eddas, the bible, koran , torah, sutras....mildly interesting as poetry and for anthropological purposes and that's it.

I'm glad to see that you care about the world enough to ignore revealed religion and devote yourself to humanity, few metalheads seem to car that much these days.

[quote]It all seems so counterproductive,un-intlellectual and just childish hate at one particular faith, as opposed to using reason,facts,etc-in a tolerant way in order to diminish christianity{and other revealed religions} stronghold[quote]
No offence, but reasoning with believers have been tried over and over again. And somehow believers can only accept things they believe, and no facts that are empirically proven. Counterproductive, definately. Un-intellectual, no, because if they don't want to learn it the easy way, they'll have to learn it the hard way. Childish, no, I think it is rather mature to see that there won't be any endings of faith if we try to keep reasoning with them.
Just as an explanation, I think it is ok to have faith in something or someone. As long as you keep that inside your room, and don't take it with you when going outside. If you want to pray before you go to bed and so calm your mind, that's fine with me. Just don't go bother other people with your beliefs.
It's about time that all people become atheist. Then perhaps we would care about this world instead of the world beyond this life (like there is any)

Dimas;why sink to the level of the "revealed religionists"?
If yuo act more mature than they, then you may not gain their favor, but you gain the favor of the rest of the world.
I'm not saying you nessacerily should or have to "reason" w"believers"{but to be homest many can be reasoned with; I was a hardcore fundamentalist, and through the constant reasoning of pateint non-christians as well as liberal christians, I was eventually reached, and now my passionate nature can be applied to making thw word better and aware of the fallacys of revealed religions such as orthodox judeo-christianity}.
Some you may be able to get through to- and they may contribute alot to your cause in the end. Some you may not be able to reach, but at leats the wordl will look at them and call them the irrational, superstitous, intolerant, and immature ones; and they will look at your cause w/more og an open mind because you conduct yourself more wisely and maturely than the "revealed religions" believers.
Do you see what I mean?
I too agree that people should be able to beleive what they wish. If people wish to follow a faith system that is so full of baloney-it's their democratic and Creator given right; I would never advocate taking that right from them-nor their right to freedom of speech{to share their beliefs w/others, even implying the others to be sinners; so long as they don't try to control the secular state-which is what the religous right is trying to do, also so long as they keep an open mind to and listen to the beleifs of those they are dooing their evangelisms too}. I also believe it is my right to counteract them w/truth and fact, and it is also the black metallers legal, democratic Creator given right to insult christians and christianity and Christ and to worship the christian concept of satan or use him as a symbol, etc; But I will also use my democratic right to not only expose the fallacy of right-ring christianity-but also the fallacy of stooping to their level of maturity{of which at times I too am guilty of dooing}.
I am not saying that black metallers don't have a right to say or beeloive these things, just that it may not be wisest way to promote their beleifs and to try to expose christianity and "revealed religions".
anyways, thanx for the thouughtful and intelligent responses I've been getting from most here so far. I appreciate the honesty but also the intelligence being displayed herein.
anyways, It may sound unblack metal to say, but...
peace

Gotaa understand, I was a Christian for 25 years up until about 3-4 months ago{after a few years of questioning the christian faith} and as such I got deeply into the Christian metal scene.
And now you feel that you have thrown the religious chains. 25 years of mental illness cannot be cured within a few months or a even a year or two. Your statement shows one clearly that morale and ethics proclamed in the bible, still contaminate you views. The so called christian metal scene is a fucking joke, metal was meant as an oppossition to the established society and the religius opression formulated by mainly the christians in the western world.
The "band" named Horde is even more pathetic trying to copy the enemies weapon, by making white/shite metal discuised in the form of black metal, and why? Again to surpress the free individual by spreading their sickening beliefs.
The fact is that christians like yourself cannot seize to stop preaching, wether you call your point of view democratic or religious, it still doesn't cover the fact that you want to convert everyone to reasoning with your beliefs.
And the fact that you suddenly abonded your religion, and turned to this BLACK METAL forum shows just how schizofrenic you are!
Praise jesus my ass, hail Satan and all real disbelievers.

Usually somthing like that would be threating to my health but I said fuck it im going to play this show, Mayhem fucking kills.

I admit it: I like Dimmu too... I just think that they might have a little too much death and thrash (I could say power metal as well) in their sound now to be classified as BM.
Satyricon's fucking great, too... they were fantastic in San Fran.
