/threadWhile I like A.J. and agree he's awesome, this isn't about the best death growlers but favorite. I believe there's no such thing as "best" when it comes to music. It's all about opinion.

Sorry about the mini-rant, I just wanted to get that off my chest. Nothing personal.

If A.J. isn't someone's favorite, then there is a high chance said person is retarded. Nothing personal. ;)

I guess he isn't much of a "growler" but JR Hayes is amazing.

I'll mention Corpsegrinder and that guy from Spawn of Possession whos name I can't remember...

Hes a great frontman and very nice Stage Presence but I never liked his vocals, its just too... well... "understandable" to me, so is Alex Camargo from Krisiun.

Definitely Akerfeldt takes the cake for me, next to that Peter Tagtren (he blew himself away on the second bloodbath album), All devourment vocalists (Wayne, Ruben and Mike all destroy!), the dude from Internal Suffering, Glen Benton may be an ass but is a great growler, the dude who sang on "None So Live", Steve tucker, Jon Vesano was THE MAN (dont like dallas, love karl sander though) and well pretty much thats it

Not all "growlers" per se but my favourite vocalists would have to include:
Rikard Jansson (Regurgitate)
Barney Greenway
Ross Dolan

with notable additions:
David Vincent
the dude from Butcher ABC that sounds like a flushing toilet
Piotr Wiwczarek (no doubt spelt his surname wrong)
Reef (Mincing Fury)
Tompa Lindberg

Going literal with the word "growler"...

Ross Dolan is about the only growler that stands out to me. The rest kind of do pretty much the same thing even when it's good.

Reifert's tone is slightly different on each album. I like him best on Mental Funeral (another factor making it their masterpiece).

09-06-2008, 01:23 PM
He's just got literally the 'sickest' style of anyone short of Jason Oliver of Infester [who's too obscure for me to expect him to be mentioned, anyhow]. He literally sounds like he's about to hurl up his innards on those first couple of albums + EPs.

Autopsy doesn't have a lot of love on this forum. I should have sent you the memo.

Neither does MA. I've noticed this is a more modern and/or Suffocation centric forum.

it is sad.

Though Mental Funeral was in the top-15 of the recent best-of-1987-1998 poll.

also keep in mind just because people don't appreciate one aspect of a band, doesn't mean they don't like the band. I like Autopsy, I just so 'happen' to not really give a special shit about Reifer's vocals... but I still like Autopsy.
