Awesome, I really like Porcupine Tree and Blackfield. I didn't even know he was going a solo album.

I've been meaning to get into Porcupine Tree for ages, I might pick this up to acquaint myself with Mr. Wilson.

If you want a good introduction to his stuff you should check out Lightbulb Sun by Porcupine Tree. One of my favs.

First of all, the trailer sounds fucking rad - I can't wait to hear the album.

Now I'll write a novel.

I used to be the biggest fan of PT/blackfield but on both of the last releases I'm a little disappointed with the direction. PT was so good before because of the way they combined progressive tendencies with really lush soundscapes and catchy pop sensibilities. But I feel like Blackfield is serving as Wilson's outlet for the lush arrangements and vocal harmonies without any of the interesting songwriting. The songs on Blackfield II are great but a little too streamlined for my tastes. On the other hand, FOABP from PT had much too great an emphasis on the metal riffs and tries to be really proggy, and I really miss a lot of the gorgeous arrangements and vocal harmonies that initially made me fall in love with PT after hearing songs like Trains and Sound of Muzak.
It's possible that future Blackfield and PT will develop into two different entities and surpass earlier PT. But I'm just afraid that the two parts of PT's old sound separated are less than the sum of them together.

My other problem with FOABP is that I miss the really personal lyrical style that made PT such an emotional band for me. Wilson had a way of writing emotional lyrics without sounding the least bit whiny and poetic without being at all obtuse. And looking at Blackfield, the lyrics on Blackfield II seem almost watered down from Blackfield I. A lot of the lyrics seem really conventional. It's not until the last track that you get something a little more ambitious lyrically.

Some of the FOABP lyrics and the song "Christenings" from Blackfield also give me a vibe of bitterness on Wilson's part that never seemed to be present in earlier work. I can't help wonder if some of that is due to his projects not being as sucessful or popular as he'd like. It would be easy to rationalize your lack of greater success by blaming current society for preventing people from appreciating art (and this idea I think is a big part of the inspiration for FOABP).

Don't get me wrong, I might seem really critical but it's only because I was so obsessed with PT and Blackfield for a few years. I still really like FOABP and I'm sure Wilson will continue to make good music. I just have a lot of thoughts on his stuff that I don't get to talk about often.

have you heard nil recurring? i like it better than FOABP.

i agree with some of what you said, and it's obvious that PT's music has taken a stylistic shift on the last few albums.

Damn, I forgot to DL Nil.. doing that now.

And yeah I agree that FOABP is probably one of my least favorite PT albums. Anesthetize is awesome though.

Yeah, I liked it better too! It seemed more organic or something. I only heard it once, need to check it out again.

Danke, that was alright. Im a big fan of anything steven wilson related. although most his side projects make me want to kill myself. ending a relationship and listening to blackfield is fucking suicide.

Absolutely love SW...the man has to be a complete workaholic, or has so many musical ideas that he's incapable of putting out less than 3 albums with 3 different projects a year, haha. I really respect him, not only for the quantity but the quality of his releases - which are inevitably kick ass.

I mean, jesus: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Steven_Wilson_discography

Hope that project with Mike from Opeth goes somewhere eventually, too...

Yeah well it took Orphaned Land 6 years to release Mabool after their second album...so looks like we're on track for six years to the next one after all. lol
It better fucking be good.

dude i'm sure it will be. Mabool's production was terrible, so if their songwriting and melodic sense don't take a nosedive I'm sure (eh...hoping) that the music plus SW's incredible production will make it a classic album.

Really? What was wrong with Mabool's production, sounds fine to me.
I expect it to be really good but at the same time they said it would be totally different so you never know how it's gonna turn out.
