Anyone play it regular here? I've just been looking at some gnarly tackles on youtube.
Being a rugby player im not going to dive into that age-old argument of rugby is better than football or vice versa and I'm not dissing this sport by any means but sometimes I just fail to take it seriously with all that padding. Whats the pain factor like in American football?

Well dont forget, this is carebear america, no one wants to see others get hurt too bad on TV. But then again look at the size of the players. I wouldnt want to get my life ruined by some 350 lb linebacker because my 185lb skinny ass quarterback chose to act like a man and not wear pads. And even with pads people are getting wrecked with bad injuries. Some guys break bones and are out of action for the rest of the season or even break their neck. Its expensive as fuck to live in this country when it comes to health. If it werent for pads, there wouldnt really be american football because everyone would be dead on the field haha

No, the kind of backyard football we play in America is more like Rugby. We spear the crap out of our friends with no kind of padding on at all.

Like I said...it's a good time.

yeah man, i used to play WR, TE and Slot back and when you go out for a pass and you dont pay the fuck attention to the people around you as soon as that ball is in your hands.....goodnight haha. Ive been laid out plently of times. The best is kick-offs though haha. Me and my buddy would run full force down the field but id stay behind him under cover, and out of no where just fly out behind him and wreck someone. Shit was so fun, but you can get hurt pretty badly even with pads lol

The REASON there is pads, is so that you CAN hit harder without fear of injury. And remember, in America we have black people, and they are bigger, stronger, and faster, than probably most every pro rugby player. So pads suit the sport well. Rugby players cannot be as carelessly violent as football players, or they would be dead. Rugby is fucking badass as all hell without pads anyways.

Getting the wind knocked out of you, pinching a nerve (SUCKS), actually breaking a bone/tearing cartilage are probably the 3 biggest things...I don't think you really feel the pain of simply being hit when your adrenaline is pumping like that.

That said, play ice hockey. I just started, it's the most fun I've ever had playing any organized sport ever.

Reg john... just think of getting hit at full speed by a 5'10" 230 pound man. Without you knowing about it. Well nevermind you probably know what the feels like.

The pain, there really isn't any. Unless it so happens ^ that happens to you. But I played on the line, so the worse I got was a scratch on my arm. And on occasion I got the wind knocked out of me.

04-10-2008, 02:18 PM

but yeah good point whoever made it, about being able to hit harder with no fears or whatever, because i suppose that changes the game completely.

have you ever seen someone juggle a kickoff? I've seen a kid start stumbling around trying to catch a kickoff that hit the ground and then hit him. Took about four swipes at it, and when he finally got control, he was in the ground. Its always funny when people get up, and it looks like they've been grazing.

I've seen a kid get his mouthguard knocked out and fly about 10 feet downfield. Actually, my sisters ex-boyfriend made that hit.

I know what you're talking about, but those aren't really pads. Usually thats just rib/posture protection. When I played football, our running back would wear those during padless practices, and during full pad practices. Its more like a flak jacket, just basketball version.

the pain factor in football is very low while playing. the next day is the real shitter. as already said in here, the size, speed and power of NFL players is greater than that of rugby players. this doesn't make either sport better, it just indicates what is most important to each sport.

I think rugby has to hurt harder at the time in general, those hards are hard and its none stop so you have to get back up and keep playing with no pads.
However, American Football has all the fun blindside blocks on people who don't have the balls, or the momentum ones on kick offs of the kick returner getting ruined which you don't have in Rugby

I never get the hype over hockey hits. They only look so bad because you don't really see a lot of hits in hockey in comparison to football. You see 4-5 badass hits like that a game in the football game, and if you wanna talk about tough sons of bitches, play on the fucking line in a game of football.

If anything, you see MORE big, notable hits in Hockey than in Football. Then again, it's kind of lame to compare two completely different sports...

*noticable* not notable.

In football, that at least 5 hits happen every play. We call that the Offensive and Defensive line. You don't see any one fly back on their ass usually (though that happens a lot too), but each of those link ups in the line is like a fight in hockey. Shit gets grabbed, one or two punches are thrown, and someone ends up on the ground eating dirt.

Then theres the play itself. The leadblockers are liable to either knock the secondary completely on their ass, or be knocked completely on their ass by the linebackers.

At which point the ball carrier is subject to any and everyone who can hit him, and everyone who can hit him is subject to being knocked on their ass by him.

you hear a lot about this "pass", "run", "block" "route" shit... what football boils down to, is, by physical force, back your oponnent up against a corner, and then take over their beloved land. Thats the object of every play.

Each player is assigned differen't positions based on their ability to deliver and take hits. Football is all about hits.

where as in hockey, you get lucky enough sometimes for there to be a guy who doesn't notice you, that you can obliterate, and send back to the 3rd grade, and then steal the puck back from him.

Unless you're Barry Sanders and juke everyone in your way to death. Or until they feel too silly to keep trying to tackle you.
